  • Today i go over the Benchmade 940 clone and we look at the fit and finish in comparison to an authentic Benchmade knife. could it be that in a desire to get as close as physically possible to the original that they actual might have a better fit and finish then the actual product? let's find out.

I like the Chinese benchmades because I like the way their lock me mechanism is. Kinda throws it in benchmades face how overpriced they are. If the Chinese would use s30v steel then there would be no point in buying a genuine benchmade

Got my knife from jufule, the demascus for $50 is amazing! Everyday carry. I played with the screw at first to get right feel. It's loosened up quite a bit now and is super smooth. I did the ti scales since it's so much different than an actual Benchmade. Then I got a d2 carbon and a d2 Osborne. Very happy.

They are good, very good at producing clones. I’ve bought 535, SBA3, TLR 8, MagPul Sights RMR, Leupold Scopes, among other things and all of it has held up. I’m not on the swat team or a navy seal so I don’t see paying 10x the price when when you get Clones that work perfectly fine, hold up long term specifically for the $ paid.

I had gotten pulled over in 2001 for a "rolling stop" and asked if I had any weapons in the car. I told the cop that I had a pocket knife. He told me to give it to him. After we were all done and he let me go freely and I asked sir can I have my pocket knife back he promptly told me do you want me to charge you with it? No I said. The he told me I had better stfu. The knife was a 1-1000 first edition 940 Osborne 😥. Before 9/11 i had my Benchmade 910 stryker taken from me by Canadian customs/border guys on the way to Toronto. This was before you needed passports. It too was a Elishewitz first edition. I hate authorities. I plan on buying one of these clones for nostalgic reasons. Thanks for the review!

I started collecting knifes maybe a year ago and given my financial constraints I decided to buy clones: I especially love the Spyderco knifes. I've bought Para 2 and Para 3 in titanium. Each was 44$ and I can tell you they are spot on. the buddy of mine has an original Para 3 Titanium (350$) and I can tell you that you simply can't tell the difference. The action is smooth, the print and screws are crisp. The price difference is in the following. First you have to pay the premium for the brand name and their marketing. And the second is the quality of the steel. All clones come in the cheapest D2 steel while original are usually in S30V which has much better blade retention. But given that I like to sharpen my knifes and that it's much easier to resharpen D2 steel than any of those so called "super steels", this isn't a problem for me.
I have 10 knifes by now, and I've spent around $500 on them. If I bought the real stuff this would have cost me between 3 and 4 grand.. No way hose. I'm not making money with those knifes (having the YT channel etc) nor am I independently rich so I could simply afford a few grand spent on a knife collection.
In my opinion there's only one aspect of knife tech that you can't get from the clone knifes and that's the damascus steel blade. All clones have this cheap awful looking damascus steel blade that can be seen from a mile to be fake.. That's why all 3 of damascus blade knifes I have I've bought from the budget company that makes original damascus steel knifes - Civivi.

I made a similar video on clones a few months ago, with a lot of the same thoughts. Clones, aren't all that bad. They are akin to a cover band. So long as they aren't a counterfeit, with fake logos and all that, I don't have a problem with them... Yes, a design is intellectual property, but we see cover bands taking someone else's song, and putting on a show at the local club every weekend. Pretty sure that Bon Jovi doesn't see a dime for it, right?
For me, clones act as a gateway drug... They allow me to try out a $450 Medford clone, for $30... If I like the design and want the real deal, then I go and buy the Medford, and I did. If I don't like the design or how it carries, I am only out $30 instead of trying to sell a used $450 knife...

The only advantage of the actual knifes at this point are the exotic steels they use. But my grampa and dad never needed a knife with Powder Metulergy steel to do the things they needed to do with a knife and I think Ill be just fine with a 440c or 8cr13mov but now a days even the clones have D2. So I think ill just spend what one benchmade would cost and get 6 different clones instead.

That's one point of view f9r sure but there still something to be said for a great American made blade now that doesn't necessarily mean powdered metallurgy for instance one of my favorite every day carries is a modified buck 110 hunter with a thumb stud. paul boss uses 420c not particularly the greatest steel in the world but his heat treat gets every inch of performance out of it possible so it's a great blade and u can get them under $40 if ypu know where to shop.

I’m a Benchmade fan but I have bought several Chinese clones as well to use as beater work knives or to test out a model rather than spending $200+ for a real Benchmade that I may not like. If I don’t love the pattern, it’s still a decent beater knife for under $50.
Strangely, I think these clones help sell more real Benchmades because if you like a model a lot, you will want the real deal. Make no mistake, a real Benchmade is always going to be better than a clone. A clone may look pretty when it’s new but it will not have the same quality of materials. The anodizing is weak on the clones. The aluminum is not the same quality, the steel is often brittle and will chip. The clones always have blade play. I carried a Benchmade 921s for 10 years everyday at work and it was still serviceable. My Chinese 940 clone is looking beat up after 6 months. It’s still serviceable but it’s not going to last 10 years.
Benchmades are worth the money if you are going to use them everyday and keep them for years. If you just want a bunch of knives to collect and not use them hard or very much, the clones may be better because you can get 5-10 of them for the price of one Benchmade. If you want one good edc, go with the real thing.

I have purchased a TON of expensive knives over the years (microtech, benchmade, etc) and have somewhat recently started buying knockoff knives to compare to my expensive ones...if you aren't looking for a "life or death" knife, buy the dhgate clone for 1/4 or 1/10th of the price. Blade steel will be a bit softer, but quality is so similar that I don't find it worth the extra $. Just don't try to tell people you own a "microtech" or "benchmade" when you own a Chinese knockoff.

Maybe I'd be ok with that if I wasn't such a damn steel snob. I just don't see the point in spending any money on a knife with a shitty steel. in my mind the performance of the steel is the only thing that really matters at the end of the day. The entire purpose of a cutting tool is to cut efficiently effectively and for a long time so if I get a clone that I have to sharpen after every use I almost feel as if it defeats the purpose of the tool itself.
I'd rather have a ugly blade with a great steel over a blade that looks like it's expensive but doesn't cut worth a damn every time. 1 good knife will last a life time we're as if you have to keep replacing crappy knives every time they break ypu may have well have just spent the money on the good knife. I just would assume in the long run it'd actually be cheaper because it's not just the cost of the item but what you get out of that item for your monet that really makes the knife worth it's keep if that makes sense.

I own a few Benchmade fakes. I'm proud to own and claim they are fake. I will not spend the stupid amounts of money to buy a real one. Their logo ain't worth hundreds of dollars to me. I carry a fake mini stimulus every day. It's fast as shit and decent knife especially for 20 bucks. I would never sell them for real knife prices. I don't plan to sell them at all. I'm buying more soon. I'm not a knife snob like so many out there. I've had many great pocket knives from gun shows for 10-20 bucks. I bought 1 knife that cost 230 bucks. A Buck 110 automatic. You know what it does?? It sits in a sleeve put away and I almost never touch it. I feel like companies like Benchmade are completely full of themselves but when you got as many fan boys as Glock, I guess it's bound to go to their heads. Back in the day when S&W and Colt made high quality firearms they were less overpriced then than these BM knives are now by a lot. For the kind of money it takes to buy a Benchmade, I want a firearm for that kind of dough. I'm a gun guy who has recently started collecting knives. Not collecting to have an investment like I have, so to speak, with guns. I'm collecting to have a bunch. I thought gun guys were nuts for the shit they spend their money on, but knife guys are outta their minds lol. Some guy on here owns a shit ton of stupidly expensive knives, carries at least one or two daily and has said they are not for self defense, utility only lol wow. I carry a knife and a gun and brass knuckles for self defense, but I've never needed them I do have to say. I'll use a knife for other random shit, but I started so I have something to stick someone with when I am at work because that's about the only place I don't have my gun. I go into a LOT of random houses. Pretty much everyone has always been co, or cool enough to not get stabbed but with as many as I go in, you just never know who you're gonna encounter. Also can't justify spending 200, 300, 400 even 500 bucks on one knife and go out and use it regularly letting it get scratched up in my pocket and wearing it out. There is no way a damn "Bug Out" costs 200 bucks to produce. There's just no way.

I buy clones because I am not made of money and want to try out this or that similar to what you did.. I am not going to drop over 200 on a knife unless I KNOW I will love it. (Got a Smock clone coming I am excited about). Much of the time the clone satisfies the silly addiction. The clones .. even the best ones.. I look at as .. crap... basically. Because 75% of what I am interested in when I buy a knife is good steel. For it to be what they say it is.. for it to be heat treated well etc. These clones will never .. ever.. ever... have good steel. It is not the China way.. Just the way it is. I love/hate China... they make it pretty hard to love them when they WILL screw you if they can.. almost 100% of the time. I don't understand that behavior at all. I never try to pass them off as real.. in fact I mark them with the correct blade steel they actually are in big ugly hand written etching. Partly to make sure no one ever screws anyone over it. Partly because I like sharpening and want to see how this or that steel does with this or that method. To keep them all straight and not rely on memory or some note I have somewhere. The way I deal with clones is I only buy if they SAY they are clones.. Usually the best you will get is "marked: M390" ... that kind of thing.. but as long as I don't feel they are trying to trick people, and if they tell me what the steel actually is. I think it is OK.. ish. 😅 IfI had more money I would never buy a thing from China.. but.. ya
All that said even some USA companies are starting to act like China. I bought a Bear Ops S30v knife... kept wondering when I was going to get past the burnt edge and down to some good steel.. well.. the reason was they flat out lied. LuvThemKnives tested 3 of them... 7 or 8cr garbage. Unforgiveable.
And yeah, sometimes some things about the clones are better.. Not the blade steel.. but some other stuff sometimes. It also can be a fun way to get new scales for a knife you have. Want some camo scales for your para2? They want over 100 bucks 👎😤.. Well this para2 clone here has the camo I wanted.. and costs 23 bucks for a whole knife lol. That part I find fun.

the materials in that knife are nowhere near $30 or $40. Closer to $3 or $4 than $30 or $40. the materials costs are negligible. This I can tell you for a fact and you can easily verify it. What you want to know is, whats the margin. What kind of margins does Benchmade run in their business? I have no clue but if I had to guess I'd bet they're some of the highest in the industry excluding the ultra high end lower volume kinda stuff. For any mainstream brand that does volume, I'd bet my left kidney Benchmade has some of the highest margins. What does that mean? That means they charge a lot for what they give you. Why? Because folks continue to buy it. The name clearly has a lot of value in the market.

I have real and clones. The auto fact clones are garbage, stay away unless you have a machine shop. The auto Osborne are great but the green coating sucks. BM puts a thicker coating on that gives it a fuzzy feel and you dont get that with a clone. The mini bugouts I've purchased for $15 are near perfect in fact some of the blades are nicer than BM. They feel like they are coated with lacquer they are so nice and take an edge that is razor sharp.

If they've upped there steel quality then idk why they don't just make there own brands. They'd prob sell well.. lol thanks for the view and comments man! Nice to meet ya

And that doesn't shock me they have so many different companies producing 940 clones in chins that I'm sure some of them are trash but if u go to Ali baba and buy a 60 to 70$ clone it's most likely gonna be damn well made but with a crappy steel now I'm sure u go to the same site and buy a 30$ clone it's gonna be trash. It all depends on the level of quality tge specific company produces.

I paid $200 for an exclusive bugout in M4(which I realize is over priced but I love super steels) I also paid $150 for a pm2 in s90v and got my 15V sprint run pm2 for what I paid for that bugout with horrible gritty action, a broken omega spring within the first 2 weeks of owning it, and frn scales. I’m not sure why people like benchmade so much. I get it’s preference but I can get bearings, titanium, and ultra high end supersteels for what I pay for a run of the mill benchmade. Not better but just as good ! D2 is the best edge holding steel and benchmade is a disloyal rip off so called American knife co ! They all use Chinese cnc machines ( yes benchmade ) to make their production clones but benchmade does not pass the saving in labor and skill ( the Chinese cnc machine makes the parts ) on to the customers like a loyal knife com. would !
S30v holds an edge as good as 440 ! And 440c is better edge holding than s30v !
But D2 is the best edg holding and the rest is liehype ! And even if the steel was as good as the liehype is would only raise the price a few dollars not hundreds of dollars !
I don't like them using the logo and it is an insult to their clone !
