      I think another problem is people buying fakes and them selling them as real. You can say “you’re not a real knife guy if you can’t spot the fake”, but these fakes are looking solid nowadays.

    Thank you for the Awesome video. You saved me from a fake buy on eBay. The difference was in the copper back spacer just like you showed. It was not purple. The seller originally said he found the knife in a storage facility he won.Later he said he sells lots of these knives. I asked just how many Benchmade 940 knives he has found in storage sheds. He refunded me. Thanks again sir.

      Really? You buy "wish" knife, than go to a dealer and buy the real deal. You swap it out and return the fake to the dealer you bought the real one from! Then the unsuspecting dealer sells the knife to a unsuspecting customer. The ONLY way to be 100% certain your knife is the REAL deal is to buy directly from the factory!

    But the most notable difference is that the original here Down Under is $AUD 360, while the clone is $AUD 36. I did not want to waste my money buying a fake Osborne, so I bought four, two 940 and two 945. BM is definitely overpriced, so F... them.

    Does anyone know what kind of black finish the Chinese clones are using? I have several different clones and some look very close with a flat black finish, but the 940 Osborne clone I have is actually a shiny black finish. They have to cut costs somewhere so we know the steel is one place and I figure the blade finish is another.

    • @markbush6918
      @markbush6918 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is just black spray paint on the clones. The clips are done the same way. Benchmade clips have a more uneven, thinner process, leaving more scratch markes. Presenter missed that in the video.

      @thomaslanders6244 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I’ve owned over 20 BM’s and 5-940’s and know them well. Color and logos change. Their QC has really improved but just BM being sloppy is going to cause knives to look different. I just bought a 417 Fact in a Cutlery Shop marked down to $148. It must have been there 2 years cause it’s 467 out of 1200. First production and even Prototype (I have a 484) aren’t worth more money. It’s a marketing thing. Real big BM collectors like on their forums don’t want writing on the blade. Plus, I’d rather a later knife then early one in case some kinks had to be worked out.

    To me there is a big difference in the quality of the Benchmade name on the clip. The fake looks like it is a simple stamp. The real one is so sharp that it looks like it is possibly milled into the clip. On the blade marking I see a difference in the thickness and sharpness of the lettering and also compare the ‘9’ in the 940. On the real one the tail on the 9 sweeps over farther to the left than the fake and looks ‘better’ to my eye.

  • @losdawg6265

    Thank you sir! Outstanding video. I’m glad to see that my 940 is legit!
    I wish I could say the same for benchmade freek. I purchased a fake on eBay. Through some research, I learned another way to tell is look for the little R with the circle (copyright symbol) on the bottom right of the butterfly on the blade. Your fake has the symbol, however, you can see that they made it way too big. If any benchmade does not have the copyright symbol, it’s a guaranteed fake (from my understanding). A true benchmade has the Copyright symbol and it is extremely small. If you can see it with the naked eye, it’s certainly a fake.

    Fakes or clones tick me off so bad. Even "homage" classic cars....just sad that people want to even keep them around or even seek them out. Many inexpensive knives are great, but if I want a classic I'll buy it when I can pay. Besides, the original company deserves the money, they cane out with it. I may be naive, but I hope pride and honor make a comeback.

      Well what created this market for these high quality fakes is the insane markup of Benchmade Knives the past 5 or so years. The Claymore is listed at $260, and it isn’t worth anything close to that really. But a fake that looks and feels pretty much the exact same for $36? I’ll go for the “fake” any day. Benchmade is shooting themselves in the foot with these ridiculously high prices.
      Besides, the fact that a fake is so hard to tell the difference between that and the “real” thing really speaks volumes for the crap quality of the real one.
      I just got a fake Claymore from online and I love it! It is pretty much the same damn knife but at a reasonable price.

    It depends where you bought it from and when.
    Alot of the things you brought up here do no exist on some of the fakes. I've got the originals and I've got the fakes of all my BM knives. The fake 940s we've ordered (satin and black coated) both have grind line. Theyve fixed the purple coloring/logo variations etc. Most of them come with a pretty good copy of the box.
    The actions on the fakes are still not as good. The axis spring has a heavier pull. The soft black bag with fakes is way too big for the knife and there's no foam insert in the box.

    I’ve owned about 20 BM’s and am certain I can tell a fake by feel, look and sound the knives make. Colors change, I have a lighter green one that is a medium green, it’s about 6-7 years old. I have a second one with DLC blade that is a much darker, brighter green, it only a couple years old. The logos are totally different too. The store I bought them from does not accept returns. I’ve had about 5-940’s and know them well. I have a green G10 REI 940 too. All are 100% real. The best fake is the 940-1 carbon fiber. REI accepts returns on anything and I guarantee plenty of 940-1’s have been bought and fakes returned. An REI store could have 10 940-1 fakes and have no clue. The 940-1 and the ZT 0456 are supposed to be the best fakes and 2 knives I’d avoid.

    The fakes often come with a reasonably well made fake box, but all the fake boxes I've seen lack the manufacture date and all the real ones have the date. However, knifes sent to Benchmade will be returned with a more generic box, so, don't send Benchmade your original box for warranty or maintenance. Counterfeit products will vary in details and quality, depending on production runs. For example, the older counterfeit 940-1 was slightly off with the carbon fiber, but has standoffs that were far too dark; the newer counterfeit 940-1 production corrected the standoff color. As far as smoothness, that varies with the real and counterfeit knives and some fakes I've handled are smoother operating than the original. The grippy chalky texture on the original 940 will become smoother with usage, so used 940s will appear different.

    • @thomaslanders6244

      The 940-1 and ZT 0456 are two of the best fakes. I’ve never bought one or seen one in person but do a ton of knife research. You hit the nail on the head. I got a 940 for $150 on EBay. Came with the box and everything and I don’t know if it’s real or not. I don’t have any other benchmade knives, but I have a few microtechs and for some reason I think mine is fake. I wish they had serial numbers on the knives

    • @LegBuilder
      @LegBuilder 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      sadly the for sure check would be to send it to benchmade for sharpening. if its fake they tell you and they keep it. my recommendation would be to look at the person you bought it from. if they have more benchmade 940's and are not a knife dealer then its probably a fake. if its just some guy that has other random stuff or random knifes it was probably real. plus you can see what there feedback is. if they have sold others and they were fake he will have a lower percent with negative reviews. last would be to go to a place like REI or cabelas and look at one that is there, see if it has differences.

    I'm looking at an Osbourne on eBay, which has both the logo and the word "Osbourne" in the boomerange-shape LOWER DOWN ON THE BLADE than the one(s) you depict. Instead of being printed across the ridge at the top of the grind, they are printed entirely on the flat of the grind. This one appears to have fancy carbon-fiber scales (which would make it an expensive version), which the seller never mentions, and comes without a box. The seller wants $150 for it. Anybody think this might be a fake?

      Correct boxes have fine, black to silvery diagonal lines across the blue parts of the box, which continue across the top "BENCHMADE KNIFE COMPANY" silver label on top of the box. Some fakes used to lack one, the other or both, though without much doubt, some fakers may have fixed that by now.
      These fakes may be very close to the originals in most ways, but if design, development, quality control and a building a reputation for the highest quality weren't valuable IP, why don't the fakers design and market their own? Let me answer that, because those factors are very valuable, and the fakers aren't capable of it. The fakers are CROOKS.

    The only problem with “fake” knives is what the counterfeiters charge for them.
    I bought 3 fake benchmade 535’s for $60 from wish and I’m still on the first one two years later.
    If you spend benchmade prices for a @ knife then you got ripped off, but if you’re spending 20-30$ then you’re telling benchmade and their 400% markups to kick rocks and you got a damn good deal for a good looking, functional and reliable knife plus, If you’re unsure about the blade quality you can buy two or three extras for still a fraction of what if costs from benchmade.
