  • Don't get scammed like I did! fake #benchmade #bugout being sold on eBay as being not only "real" but even new. I hope this video can help out anyone out there so you don't get scammed!
    the main issue I have is I wanted a 2nd bugout to modify, that is when I got scammed. not knowing enough about knives, at the time, I didn't want wnyone to go through the same issues. I hope the information helps in anyway!
    2023 edit: Yes, I get Benchmade has increased their prices. Yes, I get it you rather an unsafe made in China version. Yes, I get it that ebay has alot of scammers. I think you are missing the point. If one of these makes you want to comment on the video, then you are missing the point. I got scammed on ebay. I was sold a fake bugout, when I had pictures, and descriptions saying it was "real". I also paid close to the real price. if you go out of your way to find a fake bugout, that's your choice! if you want to only pay 20 bucks for one, great! I was under the impression it was real when I got mine. I made the video for people who got scammed like me, whether it's ebay, or the guy next door, to have a place to see what the fakes look like vs the real thing. please leave your "clones are better" comments somewhere else. thank you.

    Good video and yours is the first to show the foam peanuts that Benchmade packs with the knife. I have been ripped off too many times from ebay, always a struggle to get your money back too not to mention the stress and I pretty much gave up on ebay because of it. It's a Federal offense to knowingly sell a counterfeit product! You can get busted then sued by whatever company the counterfeit is represented as made by. The counterfeit should not be returned to the seller and should be destroyed. If returned to seller, they will use it to scam someone else. You can get refunded from Ebay/seller without returning the counterfeit product.

    Your clone is actually much easier to tell. They made improvements. But a good tell is when you close the blade, you can see the full lettering of the Benchmade whereas on the fake it's covered a little bit. The screws on the top of the handle are a good tell too. They aren't covered on the fake but on the real one the top screw of the pocket handle is covered. But even with boxes, they're just swapping them with real boxes too.

  • @RetirednbrokeinPa
    @RetirednbrokeinPa 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    On the boxes, always check out the “C” in Benchmade. The fonts are often different and the “C” is the most obvious. Just one more indicator that the knife you are examining is an imitation.

      @johnathan.jerusik  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! 10000% I actually mostly stick with actual legitimate sellers. That's where I got the 1st one. The whole thing about the 2nd one was I didn't want to spend full price to modify it and ruin a brand new knife. I also didn't know enough at the time, and also didn't even know that people made fake copies of knives. I been into knives very very casually for years. But really only knew about CRKT, Buck, gerber and like your Smith and Wesson type knives. So when I really started to dive head first into the knife world that's when the benchmades and spydercos came out of the cracks. Now I know there are thousands of knives. But my main point of this video is to document every detail I could so someone else dosent get the same scam.

    What pisses me off is that here in Australia a Benchmade Bugout costs around 210 US (300 Aussie) dollars. That pisses me off, that a piece of cheap crap like that is so overpriced. A clone costs 21 AUS $. Please, tell everyone that US products are not that great, with plastic scales, nearly non-existent liners, ordinary pocket clip, and S30V that is good, but not great. If it cost US$ 80, I would consider buying the original, but no more than that. I can buy 14 clones with that money.

    Nice work on the video. These are many of the cues I use to detect the fakes. Even looking at eBay right now, there are tons of fakes listed and just as many in already sold listings. I've reached out to a few sellers but most of them ignore and let it sell anyway (either because they don't believe me, don't care, or know it's fake). Reporting the listing as fake goes nowhere just for a one-off listing.

    I think your clone was a bad one. Because... I had one clone I purchased for fun for comparison like this video, and it almost match the real thing, including the S30V stamped in black and the thumb screw being gold (my clone was the sand color), and the color of the box being bright blue with dark lines, very sturdy too, all fonts are correct. Knife also have this satisfying SNAP when opened or folded. I also watched a video on durability for the fake and it is durable. So maybe there are different quality for knockoffs as well. My fake did come with an oversized pouch tho, just like this video 🤣.
    Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of knockoffs.
    Edit: Also.. if you bought the fake very cheap on ebay, you gotta know instantly that its going to be a knockoff, right? Even used, the real thing won't sell that cheap. Or did the ebay guy sold it to you with price of the real thing (more than $100)?

    I've had the same experience with a "Benchmade" 945bk-1 on Ebay. They passed it off as the real thing but are actually selling $30 fakes. I can't imagine how you'd sleep at night knowing you sold someone a $30 product for $171. Now the clones aren't necessarily bad knives, in fact, the fake knife was actually pretty decent, but I'm not paying a premium for not so premium materials.

    • @johnathan.jerusik
      @johnathan.jerusik  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have heard there are different qualities of clones. But to me, I am also a musician. I build guitar pedals on the side. The pedals I build are sometimes clones of other pedals. But the difference is, I don't hid it. I don't make it look like the original, and I am very clear in my price that I'm not over charging someone. But I keep a good quality in my clones. Now I get knives you can't really do that the same. But, I just got scammed on ebay 2 more times recently. One was on a bugout with the carbon fiber. The pictures that were used was for the real version. So theres no way of knowing. I did get my full money back, but the seller never responded to me or ebay and I kept the knife. The carbon fiber scales, which could be fake CF, already are cracking and I didn't even use the knife. I was holding it and gave it a squeeze to feel how rigid the knife was. I also got scammed recently on a set of "CF-Elite" scales. The seller I don't think knew anything but they were so cheap im not going to make a big stink. But those scales are so flimsy I can almost bend them in half without trying. I don't get how anyone can sleep at night screwing people over. Especially when we are in this day and age with everything being outrageous in cost

    • @blossomingpoot044
      @blossomingpoot044 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnathan.jerusik Yeah I agree. I don't think it's right to pass off one of the clones as a real Benchmade especially if you're going to be charging someone for the real thing. The sellers could at least admit it's a clone, tell you what steel it's made of, and tell you the materials the parts are made of, and they would get the same amount of money as they would charging $100-$200+. More people would buy a clone because it's like test driving a Ferrari before buying it. Most people want a cheaper Benchmade clone because they want that feeling and functionality without the price. I know this because a lot of my friends like Benchmade knives but can't afford one so I told them about some clones and they were all over it. They all bought their own clones and they love them and the knives haven't had any major issues besides the action sounding gritty but they couldn't complain cause they snagged them for $30-$40 each. Now if you start to charge $170+ for that $30 Chinese knife, that's a freakin' problem and you should be ashamed. Someone was looking forward to receiving a real Benchmade knife and got severely disappointed.

      @@johnathan.jerusik That's the other thing. Using the Benchmade logo on the knife when it's not licensed or made by Benchmade is a copyright issue and should be addressed. When I see an obvious fake posted as an auction and it's getting bids I like to check back to see the feedback and it's almost always positive.
    There was/is an obviously fake Mamba on there recently (for $500) and just to mess with the guy I asked him if the liners were magnetic (ignoring that the scales were G10 instead of CF) and when he said yeah I told him the real ones are titanium and titanium isnt magnetic (practically speaking). He said they were made with a "super strong magnetic titanium mix".
    The entire "unpaid corporate attack dog" subset of the knife community doesnt make any sense to me. I have worked with a few custom makers in the past whose designs were counterfeited and their reactions varied from amused to flattered. They knew that they were never gonna lose a single customer to the counterfeiters, yet I've seen people on forums write novel length, vitriol filled (read: racist/xenophobic/jingoistic) posts "in support" of those same makers.

Even if you go to brands that are similar in quality they are honestly close in price but lucky enough there are many good brands that sell budget knives that smash these clones in quality as they are not trying to fool they are just making good knives at a budget price.

The butterfly logo (on knife blade) on the authentic has a very small copyright logo that looks as small as a period, yet is crisp under magnification. The fake has a copyright logo that is 2 to 3 times the size. The fake is a fraction of the knife the real version is. Stop knowingly buying fake shit!
