I'm running a cane creek coil shock with a valt progressive coil on my V2 Ripmo with a cascade link. Like you, the 36 Grip 2 up front started to feel a little lacking. so I got the Vorsprung smashpot coil conversion with HBO. My word, I think I've stumbled upon the holy grail suspension setup on my Ripmo!
As a lighter rider (140lbs geared), I've struggled finding good air settings that aren't too harsh. I switched to coil front and rear on a Stumpy Evo with the cascade link last year and I really can't say enough good things about it. I was able to slow down the damper and add slightly higher spring rate, and it feels amazing, plush off the top, supportive in the middle, more predictable like Jeff said and no issues with bottom out with HBO on both. Not sure I'll ever go back to air, just night and day better. RS RC2T with Springdex, and Vorsprung RS Pike.
I could see the Tigon being a great choice on the Stumpy, especially if riding the mullet link. I preferred the Stumpy with dual 29" wheels, the slack headtube cup, and the mullet link in back. A bit taller, still slack. The TIgon would help a lot with that.
@@aledskaMTB same here, i even emailed Creek and they responded with just use the tool to set it and after some riding itll loosen up. i actually dont mind the stiffness thanks to the included hex tool. if it didnt come with that it would be more annoying
@@BenSch100 Never tried a HBO shock, but comparing it to my previous air shock i can say it feels similar to that. I'm 165 lbs running a 450lb spring and 25psi in the chamber. It's plenty supple and grippy off the top, and it progressively gets more resistant the further you go through the stroke. I like a lot of bottom out resistance so that's why I have it set so high. Most people i've talked to run 17-23psi.
You did it! I'm 2 months into having Tigon on my firebird and it's been a welcome change for composure on chunk (trying to give turning or pop input over rocks/roots)! Stoked to hear what you've found it to be like on the ripmo! I'm running a 450lbs spring with about 20 psi in the chamber.
Nice set up! I enjoyed the Fox shocks on the Firebird as well, and did not have a massive preference for the Fox DHX over the X2 even. Would be fun to try the Firebird again, it's been 2 years now!
@LaurentiusTriarius I'm 195 with gear. I run a 450 coil (tried a 500 first). The damping is good enough that you can pre load your way between and more miss our on support (IMO). I mostly race my firebird, but I'm by no means the fastest or hardest charger. Most of the things I like about the Tigon of likely find on other coils, but for me the advantages of the air chamber were great enough to try it.

Oh now.... I've got a GRIP2 damper in my garage and a new pair of Z1 Bomber Coils, now i know i can mate them together.....i know what I'm doing later!! Thanks Jeff
The Z1 Coil is on my "want-to-have-but-dont-need" list for a while but after Jeff's previous review I concluded that I don't need it next to my Fox36/Fox38 Grip2 and ZEB\Lyrik Ultimates but it's Red and has a Coil was my only reasoning before. And now Jeff is telling us with a damper upgrade to Grip2 it's actually great?! This is the ONE more reason I needed to convince myself to get one now!! Haha! Thanks Jeff..
The spring rate (k in F=kx, x being displacement) is constant for a coil spring, not the force required to compress throughout the stroke. The force increases linearly throughout the stroke.
That HSC knob is super tight at first but once it breaks in you can move it without the tool. I also felt like the shock was much better as it broke in. I’m 230lbs and love the support I can get with this thing without the harshness that the X2 at 300psi provided. A light rider may not have the same results but that seems to be par for the course with Cane Creek suspension.
i got a tigon on my first ground up build, still havent finished yet. glad to see some more content on the shock. i bought it solely from the starling video. ive got the 650-760 sprindex on it. i got it through Klarna so it wasnt such a punch to the wallet

Hey Jeff, loved this video! a video about cockpit set up would be interesting, I’ve recently been experimenting with stem length, stack hieght and bar width… just an idea! I’d be curious to know your preferences given your unique riding style that many of wish to emulate!!
Thanks Dream! I may just do that…. So many video ideas, such little time!!! I did do a video about bar width a few years ago. Wider bars slow your steering and make your smallish bike feel bigger. The more interesting bit was that on bigger bikes you can go narrower to get a more nimble and playful feel. I am 760-770 width these days. More often at 770 recently.
Im going for a Z1 coil with the new MRP Lift damper. Paired with a Cane Creek Kitsuma DB coil shock on an Intense Tracer 279 (plenty of ramp in the frame). Hoping it will be the ultimate setup.
I just bought a used 2022 Altitude with a 36 grip two equipped with a Push Acs3 coil conversion, where the last 30% of the travel is air, which absorbed bumps way better then my air grip 2 38, also is very similar concept that would be the perfect paring for that shock, linear bikes… my altitude works great with a DHx2
Great video! Perfect timing. I did back to back comparisons at snowshoe last weekend of a carbon ripmo on Fox factory suspension (38 fork) and a ripmo AF with the coil fork and coil shock. The AF was so plush and didn’t kill my hands on 1500’ descents. The carbon killed my hands but it was more poppy and slightly more fun at times. Wonder if the frame material matters that much or the coils front and rear made all the difference? Curious what your thoughts are Jeff.
The AF is a pretty flexy bike- for me, that’s not a good thing. It’s highly distracting and zaps my confidence. I think most of what you’re noticing is a combo of the poppy air suspension as well as the likely 4lbs of weight difference between them. 2lbs between af and carbon. And 2lbs between coil and air.
Great video, contrary to the other says, I love the looks of the ripmo, how thus this compare to Giant Reign 2020-2022 29er? Since they almost had the same amount of travel and geometry if you ever ridden one.
I love my Ripmo AF, I love it even more once I “Long-Shocked” it. There’s enough room between the clevis and the seattube to stuff in an 8.5x2.5 shock and give the ol girl 165mm of rear travel. Sadly the carbon one can’t do this. I *had* been using a 2018 Cane Creek Double barrel coil with a VALT spring, on my 2019 AF but after Cane Creek was unable to supply parts for a rebuild and it’s been torn apart for 6 months, I’m pretty leery of the life span of CC products.
@@JeffKendallWeed I love the Ripmo, but I always felt like it was a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. In the AZ chunk I could use up the 147mm rear end too quickly. The extra 20mm gives the bike a proper 'enduro' feel. Like a poor-man's Pivot Firebird.
