Testing A New Coil Shock On My Trail Bike

  • I got a Cane Creek Tigon Coil shock in to replace the shock I broke a few weeks back, so today we're at my local bike park to break it in a little. Along the way we got side tracked, so I didn't really get to put the shock through the paces but it felt good to see how it felt on some heavy hitting trails at bolton valley.

    I was sure this felt way smoother than usual and sure enough this one is 60fps. I like it.

    Getting your suspension dialed is a losing battle, I click and turn things for months without taking notes then my 8 yrs old nephew comes for xmas and fk things over playing with the shiny knobs ... 😂

    I run my 2021 GT Force with a coil and it feels so much better than it did with an air shock. Something about the linkage on that frame plays so well with the coil. It feels better on everything aside from climbs.

    Always enjoy watching you rip down trails! Any thoughts/preference on 24 vs 30 vs 60fps recording? I wonder how much lighting conditions change the preference too. The day you filmed this had dang near perfect lighting

      I'll die on this hill 24fps doesn't make any sense for action sports unless you're using a gimbal. I think most people are so caught up trying to chase that "cinematic" because that's what early TH-cam filmmaking channels preached. The whole reason why 24fps looks cinematic because of the motion blur, but action cameras need a higher shutter speed (aka less motion blur) for the electronic Image Stabilization to work halfway decent which completely defeats the purpose. Not to mention 24fps just looks choppy.
      30fps is what I've mostly used. There's a few reasons, but some of them were include battery life, low light limitations, GoPro's chip limitations, TH-cam limitations, storage space and computer editing limitations. 60pfs drained battery quicker, was more taxing to edit, took up more storage space, TH-cam's compression was even worse for higher FPS videos, it limited some of the GoPro's filming options,, and for the longest time most people couldn't even watch 60fps because of their monitors/phones/tvs didn't have that capability. So I just go used to using 30fps because it was the tried and true options, and haven't really put much thought into using 60fps since.
      60fps is more compelling now that most of of those limitation are gone. TBH I accidentally recorded this video in 60fps because I was playing around with that setting at home and forgot to change it back. And while the rendering process did take longer, the batteries lasted long enough, the file sizes weren't insane and the video just looks better IMO so I think I'll be playing around with it some more from here on out.

      @@SkillsWithPhil That's quite the hill! Honestly makes tons of sense, especially since you've been in the content creation scene throughout vast action camera improvements. I feel like the 24fps can also help with immersion and context, but the more clear image of 30fps and now maybe 60 is a huge plus.
      Would be rad if you could film the same section of trail showing all three so we could really see the difference! Thanks for continuing to provide the rad videos, Phil!

    Hey Phil, everyone tells me I should ride a hardtail for a year (which I already bought.) What are your thoughts on the first year on a hardtail thing? I'm 34 btw so not super young, haha.

    • @jltrack
      @jltrack 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Go for a full suspension trail bike. I’d recommend a hardtail for a grom starting out but a full suspension will be more comfortable, confident and you’ll progress faster

      @LaurentiusTriarius 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I tell people to start with a hardtail because it's a cheaper way to get into the sport and get familiar with mountain biking companies, riding types and what you find interesting. Hardtails are also much simpler so mechanically there's less to fiddle with and go wrong. Once you've ridden a little bit you'll generally have a better idea of what you're most interested in and thats when you can make a better educated decision about bike to get. But really there's no right or wrong way to get into biking.

    • @MTBChuckQC
      @MTBChuckQC 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      38 here and been riding my hardtail for 5 years now 😂 with some upgrades it can be pretty decent. But I'm clearly due for the double sus now. Hardtails will help you learn line reading faster because you won't pass easily on every rocks and try to avoid them the max, so you're always searching for the smoother line.

    Hey Phil, do you run your gopro on your chin? If so do you do anything to reduce breathing noise while you ride? Thanks!

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Nothing to be honest and usually you can still hear it. I actually think it helps give a little context to the video, you can tell when a section is tiring or even stressful. That being said, people still complain about my breathing from time to time but what do they expect? I t's a physical activity you are going to hear me breathing and are delusional to think otherwise.

    • @joecavalier6535
      @joecavalier6535 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @SkillsWithPhil only reason I ask is I consider myself a fairly fit guy but when I watch my recently recorded videos the breathing seems super loud compared to yours. But no you are right it does add context, of course there's gonna be some *heavy breathing* doing what we do!
      Thanks man

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It also depends where the camera is mounted on the chin, i run mine beneath the chinbar, but I've seen a lot of people running their camera directly infront and id imagine that captures a lot more breathing noises

      I was never diagnosed with anything, but I strongly relate to people who have. A few teachers told my parents that they suspected i might have ADHD but I never learned about that until i was already in my 30s. Apparently this isn't that uncommon, many people who have ADHD and Autism fly under the radar because symptoms of adhd/autism sort of mask symptoms of the other. 🤷‍♂️
