  • The history of the Reconquista continues! Our story begins in the aftermath of the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The Christian kingdoms of the north pursue the war of reconquest against the Muslims of AlAndalus. We begin with the tale of Berenguela, a powerful medieval woman. She would work tirelessly to put her son, Ferdinand III of Castile on the throne. Her sacrifices would pay off as Ferdinand would become one of the greatest warrior kings of the Reconquista. The history of the Iberian Peninsula would shift decisively to the Christian cause.

The story of the Reconquista continues with the Castilian monarchy in a multi-generational story. This part is going to lay the foundation with Berenguela. Hope everyone likes. As always, if you like the video, please share on social media. There will be 4 - perhaps 5 parts. Let me know if you want one big video combining all the parts together like last time!

You know I love everything you do, but this is an amazing point in Spain's future history. I am so glad you decided to show this part of 'the turn of the tide' in the Reconquista as most people do not realize where and when the later Spanish Empire was born. Berenguela can be considered not just the mother of Leon and Castile, and Ferdinand the Third but more rightly, the Mother of the Spanish Empire.
This transition is akin to the begin of the Roman Empire about a thousand years before. The consolidation of Leon and Castile sits as the pseudo-mirror moment of Rome overthrowing their masters, the Etruscans. Now the manner at which it is conducted may not be the same in exactitude, however it's long term outcome is quite easy to see in the comparative. Rome takes Etruria removing the only other truly powerful state in the north of Italy and absorbing them into Rome rather than leaving them to rot on the vine, within a few hundred years Rome is reaching out across the many waters.
The consolidation of Castile and Leon, with Castile essentially absorbing Leon into Castilian power rather than leaving the power base of Leon to rot on the vine, and within a couple hundred years Spain is reaching out across all the waters, and much like Rome, finding new lands and claiming them Empire. Spain even kidnaps and Italian (roman!) and seizes a land before hand unheard of. How is that for Berengeula's legacy?
Amazing work, superb choices as always on who really matters. I am still somewhat amazed you are not voicing on television.

Every since I watched the old television episodes of "Zorro", I fell in love with Spanish culture expressly with the unique, flamboyant, colorful and well fitting dress attire both men and woman. People, this series on Spain had me thinking. The Muslim kingdom lasted about 500 to 800 years in Spain and the decendants of the early settlers had to flee to other countries when the Christian s came to power.
What had me thinking, is that America and Canada are at least 400 years since independence or colonization, and the decendants of the early colonizers of North America could face such a dilemma in the next 500 years. The original north American are buying up land and they have treatises that they are their own nation. In addition, the US took land from Mexico to form Texas and California. However, today,, the the hispanic population of Texas and California is increasing. Food for thought

Although I'd really like to hear more music of the period(much of which is very beautiful, and some it just downright cool), the more modern sounding, flamenco-type music you've selected is great too! In addition to having a very Spanish "flavor", it has the energy of a people on the move, and on the ascendency! Even the sword you use for the logo is somewhat Spanish in style, albeit a bit stretched out. It has down-turned quillons, and for some reason the Spanish loved down-turned quillons! Perhaps there was a Moorish influence there, I don't know...

@@FlashPointHx Oh. Well it's a part of the northern crusades. Starts in 1230 and ends 1284. Although the Teutonic knights were there sooner than that.
The primary source is Nicholas von Jeroschin or Peter von Dusburg. Depending on whether you prefer Latin or medieval German.
A lot of stuff happens. So I don't know where to begin. But basically it boils down to this: the Teutonic knights come in, they do a good job. A secular Noble gets scared and attacks the knights with pagan aid. The knights win. Then the pagans rebel again and they lose.
Honestly it's quite a story. In one part, (and this one isn't for children), a Christian man has his pregnant sister murdered by a pagan by cutting out her baby. And he spends the rest of his life making the pagans regret it. It's a really sad event. But you'll see it. Then there's the battle of Reisen River, where the knights kick ass. And A few others.
      Both with mistakes and successes.
Honestly I'm surprised you haven't heard of it.
