  • Alphonso X, the son of the warrior king Ferdinand III, comes to power. While a powerful sovereign in his own right, the new king is enamored by wisdom and knowledge. His actions personify him more as a philosopher king than a warrior. His ambitions, however, lead him to seek the title of the Holy Roman Emperor, but in doing so, he is blinded to the domestic demands of his powerful kingdom.

Hello everyone!! Soooo good to have my voice back! This part is dedicated to all the fathers out there! Wanted to get it out by June 16 for Father's Day, but it was 30+ minutes long and took till now to finish. Made two mistakes - at 2:29 its a pic of Alphonso XI not the X - and at 29:52 it should be Muhammad II as Muhammad the I's fell from his horse in Jan and died. Otherwise I hope you enjoy this part and as always, if you liked it - PLEASE don't forget to share on social medial and spread word about the podcast!!

I would say that instead of hitting up a random castle it would make much more sense to check out a fortress city. Toledo is not to be missed! There are parts that are a bit touristy but it retains a great deal of its historical medieval charm. The tiny passageways, the old stone bridges, and the view from the top are amazing. Plus if you have kids, there are places to relax chill and get something to eat / drink and a bunch of quaint parks for them to play in. It’s a 40 minute train ride from Madrid.

Alfonso loved his eldest son Ferdinand a lot, but he later died in 1275. Ferdinand left two sons, Alfonso and Fernando. Alfonso wanted Ferdinand's sons to be the next heir, but his second son Sancho also claimed the throne through proximity of blood and seniority (based on an old custom). After Alfonso X passed away, Sancho eventually won and became the new king as Sancho IV.

I cannot wait for you to get to Queen Isabella of Castile. Her story is outright like a fantasy novel.
The Crusades had ended in defeat. Jerusalem belongs to the infidels. To the east, the Turks had blasted their way into Constantinople, a shadow that would haunt Christendom during her time. Islam would continue its march into the Balkans, while in Iberia the banner of the Reconquista no longer stirred. Christianity was failing.
France would not abandon her rivalries with England, Aragon, and the HRE. Poland feared the heathens at her border. A succession of kings had left Castile troubled, in debt, and crime-ridden. Europe was a tiny, frightened, and cold land at the edge of the known world, soon to be conquered by an alien menace.
And then a woman-of all the people in 15th century-changes everything. Imagine from being the least likely contender for a crown to become the undisputed ruler, restoring order and justice after so many decades of anarchy, bravely riding across Spain to smack down a rebellion without an army but with her mere presence alone, forging her ill-united kingdom against the remaining foothold of Islam in the peninsula, and send forth Columbus to begin the global empire that would dominate for the coming centuries. Imagine winning for Christianity an entire continent. Imagine that her language, Castilian, has more speakers than English by tens of millions to this day.
Then imagine some history book dimming her importance by placing her name after Ferdinand. Imagine your husband being called the Prince by Machiavelli for conquering Granada, when, in fact, Ferdinand wanted to put Castile’s troops against France instead of the Reconquista. Isabella refused. The Perfect Prince was a Princess, but nobody ever says that. Imagine Sultan Suleiman praised as the Magnificent, never mind the son and brothers he killed to protect his power. Imagine Isabella, a doting mother, facing all the tragedies of her children, being called a monster by the modern world for decisions that any ruler of her time, far less virtuous than her, would have done the same as well.

Thank you for leaving this wonderful comment. You really know your history! You also seem to have a very eloquent way of writing. When I first read this I thought you were getting this out of a book, but then I realize this is just someone who is very passionate about history! I am looking forward to getting to Isabella. I agree with you, she was a very impressive person who later historians would give a lot of credit to her husband. But in reality, she was able to unify her country and bring about a powerful state that in a matter of a few decades would have a world empire. I still need to get through the kingdom of Granada. But after that I intend to do a two part series on Isabella.

The forced conversion of the Mudejares and Jews was precisely to prevent a fifth column after the fall of Grenada in 1492. The Ottomans had conquered Constantinople in 1453, and by 1492, the Ottoman Empire had reached Algeria. The Ottomans had vowed to reconquer Spain, thus the expulsion of all non Christians who had not converted as conversion was an option.

The rarity was the time when the Basques were part of Navarre. Guipúzcoa was Navarrese only a century and Biscay and Álava fewer years than that. I wanted to reply to a question you posed in previous episodes about the so-called "holy wars" and what makes a man fall for the call of religious leaders to go on a killing spree in the name of God.... It is simply money, gold, land, wealth and fame ... It's heaven on earth here and now that motivates him more the paradise in the life thereafter. How can any man resist the temptations of being able to acquire all of that in almost no time... Add to it, the exoneration of any quilt and exemption of remorse by the highest moral authority on earth ... and the praise and glorification by the people as a hero and a historical figure championed till eternity for their liberation from Tyranny and emancipation from bondage.

Nevertheless, when it comes to the reconquista, I view it in its historical context and that the native people of any land has the right to exist on it free from tyranny and subjugation and especially to fight foreign invaders to liberate their land and preserve their heritage. Saying that, I acknowledge the fact that those invaders in this story were my ancestors with whom I disagree when it comes to the war crimes and atrocities committed for against mankind.... But that was how cultures and knowledge were exchanged between nations .... through war and conquest. I also know as you all must acknowledge, crimes committed by Arabs and Muslims in the Iberian peninsula is no where near those committed by the conquistadors in the Americas thereafter. • @DiamondMind
      @DiamondMind 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@FlashPointHx We *"absolutely"* need oxygen in order for our cells to live and thrive. That is an absolute statement. Is it wrong? The Japanese's treatment of Chinese POWs in Manchuria during world war two was *"absolutely"* vile. Their war crimes were *completely* and *utterly* morally reprehensible. Am I wrong in using absolute terms here to describe these statements of fact?
As much people love to look at the past through the lens of presentism, the reality is that this notion of "convivencia" is an *absolute* lie. There was no enlightened benevolent Islamic rule in Spain which ushered in this socially progressive utopia where Christians, Jews, Muslims (please insert here whichever current and politically correct multi-cultural statement you want) lived side-by-side in harmony.
How do people squeeze "convivencia" out of hundreds of years of frontier warfare where people lived in constant strife and threat of loss of life and limb? How many battles were waged in Spain alone between the Moors and Christians? Is that a suitable example for convivencia?
How do people squeeze "convivencia" out of an inherently belligerent and hostile Islamic theology which views all unbelievers as perpetual enemies that deserve to be subjugated and humiliated as dhimmi? Again, how do people squeeze "convivencia" out of dhimmitude? Was the status of the dhimmi one of equality and equity?
Even in this so called "Golden Age of Islam in Andalusia" punishments for blasphemy, heresy and apostasy were notoriously intolerant. Even within Islamic viewpoints there was severe hostility towards dissent. I'll give you an example: The widely used manual of jurisprudence _al-Tafri_ which was used even after the Christian conquest of Granada prescribes death for Mutazili heretics and forbids marrying, socializing and even saluting anyone who subscribes to other Islamic Sunni schools of thought.
We even have famous Arabist Ignaz Goldziher confirming that contrary to popular opinion, the Maliki sect in Spain practiced sharia more rigorously vis-a-vis the east (F.M. Pareja - "Los árabes españoles y el Islam. "Actas del Primer Congreso de Estudios Arabes e Islámicos, Córdoba 1962").
Why would they be so intolerant? Well because these Islamic jurists had a large Catholic population to contend with. In other words, contact with Christians and Jews exacerbated Islamism and made them even more intolerant. We are talking about a frontier here.

I doubt I will be the one to change your mind. You have an opinion which is very much set and does not seem open to negotiation. If you do want another perspective, go back to my episode 6 which talks about convivencia - or the lack thereof. I’ve done research on this series for two years straight. What I find is a path surrounded by biased opinions with people convinced they and ONLY they know The Truth. I find the more polarized the view and the smaller capacity for reception to another’s opinion, the less I can give that person any credence. You’re obviously very intelligent - so please follow along and continue to give your insight. I may not always agree with you but I created this series to be a platform for everyone to give their views. My only request is that you read the other comments as you go.

@@FlashPointHx You make very well done videos, I enjoy watching them, but I just cant agree with some of the content. Tbh, my opinions change pending new information and well the information that is available to be scrutinized on the topic of religious and cultural tolerance in medieval Spain points in the complete opposite direction of convivencia.
You may be right, that my views on Islamic Spain are pretty hardwired, but unless some new evidence comes to light that sharia practiced in the middle ages was somehow *more* tolerant than the Islam we see being practiced today in many fundamentalist Islamic countries (Im thinking primarily of places like Iran and Saudi Arabia) it strikes me as utterly absurd to think that Islamic rulers of the 8th to 15th century somehow because of their religious convictions created a _"culture of tolerance"_ to quote the subtitle of María Rosa Menocal's book. This statement is delusional on its face. We scarcely see any tolerance coming from the Islamic world today, let alone 1000+ years ago. Who in their right mind would actually believe that Islam was *more* tolerant (or more conducive for tolerance) in the middle ages? This is laughable.
Anyone who spends the time to study and investigate classical Islamic law and its authoritative mandates, recognizes that Islam is not about creating a society of co-existence and harmony with competing religious groups which have completely disparate points of view. Islam proper seeks to dominate and impose itself (by force if necessary) on the religious, political and cultural spheres, with the ultimate aim of destroying and eliminating other ways of life. This is why when the Catholic Monarchs (Isabella and Ferdinand) finally entered Granada in 1492 there were no Christians anywhere to be seen living within the city. Why would that be?

@@FlashPointHx I will leave with this final comment. Here is an excerpt from classical Islamic legal scholar Majid Khadduri's book, "War and Peace in the Law of Islam":
Islam, emerging in the seventh century *as a conquering nation with world domination as its ultimate aim,* refused to recognize legal systems other than its own. It was willing to enter into temporary treaty relations with other states, pending consummation of its world mission. The Prophet and his successors, however, reserved the right to repudiate any treaty or arrangement which they considered as harmful to Islam. . . . *_Although the normal relationship between Islam and non-Muslim communities is a state of hostility,_* it is not considered inconsistent with Islam’s ultimate objective if a treaty is concluded with the enemy, whether for purposes of expediency or because Islam suffered a setback.*
I fail to see how this attitude is conducive to "convivencia"

Great stuff, I love your delivery!
But because it is evident that you take a topic and attempt to remain as neutral as possible, allow me to provide a slight bit of constructive criticism.
It sounds at times like there is a slight undertone of bias against decisions made by Christian forces, vs those made by others.
Its noticeable by what you highlight, side commentary, and tone.
One single example is how there is highlighted criticism of Christian forces not vested in the reconquista, as they should be. This is done by pointing out they attack both Christians and muslims.
But then highlighted criticism of the exact opposite action in how Christian forces dismiss Muslims from conquered territories later on which is in line with the reqonquista.
Not contesting whether or not these things happened, nor the accuracy of your information, rather that a position over time, not solely on content, but becomes noticeable based on opinions, delivery, tone of voice etc. It only becomes more evident with more content provided.
However I absolutely love this stuff, and you are extremely entertaining and well read. Thank you for your great vids !
Keep up the good work, and hopefully my criticism is taken as constructive, not as an attack on your material.

Hey thank you for this! It’s inevitable that bis comes through in one way or another. I’ll keep this in mind as I continue. Unfortunately, I’m getting to the end of Al Andalus. But I still have two or three episodes before Isabella and Ferdinand crush the Emirate out of existence. Thanks for this!

Actually, most of the knowledge the Berbers/Muslims of Spain had was taken from the Hispano-gothic traditions.
