- In the last part of Episode X, we look into the latter years of Alphonso X. A Castilian King who descended from a line of warriors kings of the Reconquista; he was a man with lofty ambitions and an even greater love of knowledge. He pursued the fight against the Muslims of Granada - the last emirate of Islam in Spain. However, the fickle political climate nearly brought his rule to an end. Yet despite hardships he would still leave an impressive legacy.

Wow another great video, never knew so much was attributed to King Alfonso X, absolutely amazing here. Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (on spanish guitar???) is great for lifting the spirits and makes one reflect on what Alfonso really wanted and held dear to his hear, which I think was to see all people in a more enlightened, better state of mind, free from ignorance, cruel subjugation and superstitions. I'm sure his desire to become Holy Roman Emperor was not a pursuit of vanity, or to be seen as a God Chosen protector but one he really wanted to use to make the whole of Europe a better place through enlightenment in Science, Medicine, Philosophy and the Arts. He didn't become Emperor but even as King of Castille he left an amazing impact for the entire world. Thanks again for another super cool video.
when I was looking up music I found William Wilson who happened to be a fellow Californian. He readily agreed to let me us his music. When I played the ending sequence for my wife, it put a smile on her face. I knew this would be a perfect ending for such an amazing man. I am curious what would have happened had he become emperor. Perhaps it was too late in his career to make a huge impact, but still. Perhaps the Renaissance would have come earlier. Again, happy that you liked this video. I felt like I put a lot into it. BTW, Ode to Joy resonates with me - it was made when Beethoven had lost his hearing and he was bitter at life. Yet he still created something beautiful. It reminded me of Hemingway's 'A Moveable Feast' - which was published after he committed suicide - it was a short story of his life before he became famous and he was still young and vibrant and deeply in love with his first wife. I read this for the first time when I was in Paris and was just blown away.
Terrific episode. The epilogue of the Alfonso X's life is simply beautiful. Thank you for your awesome work.

The Kings with the epithet "the Great" or "the Warrior" are good in their own right, but they can't match to those few that in a time ruled by war were deemed "the Wise". Alphonso X still inspires so many people to many things, and he even lives so into today that his songs ended up as soundtrack to memes.
Tell me which medieval King has such a legacy, from being a scientist and an astronomer and a musician and a warrior, up to be a sort of a meme-writer, HUNDREDS of years before the first meme?
Alphonso X is a King for all times. For the past, for the present, for the FUTURE.

The Cantigas de Santa Maria were composed in Galician-Portuguese. Even to this day here in Brazil we study them in school, as they were the first literature written in the vernacular. I find them extremely fascinating from an artistic and linguistic point of view.

I can feel my Iberian DNA feeling proud for this presentation. Found out I got about 19% N. African and Iberian DNA in Sephardic genes. The story was that half my genes came from Sicily but wow, my Sicilian genes come from as far as Western Asia and Eastern Europe! Including N. Africa and Iberia! The other half is Celtic. Talk about conflict! 💖😎

It seems to me that all philosopher kings have their weaknesses. With Solomon, it was his harem. With Marcus Aurelius, it was his son Commodus. And with Alfonso, it was his ambition.

Morocco is very underrated great nation in muslim world. People in muslim world always talk about how great and badass Ottoman Turkey. Imagine in 15th and 16th century, Morocco have to protect their nation from being conquer by world superpower at that time like Portugal, Spain and Ottoman.
You are right, but consider how things would had happened if Columbus didn't reach America: the original plans of the Spanish Monarchy was to «retake» Northern Africa by focusing their military there in the Maghrib. Most probably you would be speaking Spanish. 😉
@@fernandogarcia3957 The only reason spain got that strong was because OF the new world. Put simply, the forces of the ottoman empire would not have accepted a complete conquest of morocco. The moroccans would also be very hard to subjugate . So Imagine an ottoman empire(which was in its prime till the 17th century) versus a spain lacking gold. But then you say, what if the ottomans did not intervene, well I would tell you that the moroccans successfully repulsed many invasions from portugal and even killed its king (1580). Morocco would certainly be a very tough enemy for spain and rebellions would be very frequent.
@@ahmedbassam400 I agree with most of what you say. The war of Granada started another way of making war after the Succesion crisis in Castile. Now you find a bunch of noblemen that instead of fighting each other, are focused on obeying the Catholic Kings and being directed instead of squabbling among them. The Spanish didn't find much gold in America, it was mostly silver and only 20% came to Spain. No, it wasn't the gold nor silver, Isabel and Fernando were the best kings Spain has ever had, there are other things that can explain without being money the sole reason for success. It was organisation, discipline and use of arkbusiers or musket with pikes in the tactical area, for example. The crossbowman changes to arkbusier, as later in Lepanto.

Man, this Reconquista had a lot of ups and down. I use to think of this period as a dark period in Spains history and nothing more, Did not know any details of the 800 years. Now I find out that it was a colorful period rich in interesting history. Thanks again.

Oh man, your comment made a perfect ilustration to me of what is the general view about Spain: unbased prejudices. Surely this contry has to be obscure, backwardish, retrogade etc You lines are perfect to set an example of what its Leyenda Negra is.
Awesome depiction of historical facts presented in such colorful narrative in medieval Spain during the reign of Alfonso el Sabio. "By reorienting the work of the School of Translators of Toledo towards translating the works into Castilian instead of Latin, he encouraged the use of this then-vulgar language, laying the foundations of the Spanish language."
During Spain's Golden Age or its "Siglo de Oro," (1580-1680) Spanish culture (literature: poetry, drama story, etc.; the arts: painting, drawing, sculpture and so on) have reached the crowning glory of what the wise king had started centuries before.

Somehow Alfonso X was the real precursor of the Italian Renaissance. It was in Toledo, Spain (Hispania or Iberia), that the Eastern and Western World merged, Legacy of Muslim Al-Andalus, that combined knowledge of places as far away as China and Europe, and it was Alfonso X and his Toledo School of Translators that made it possible for that knowledge to be spread throughout Europe and reach Italy. Without Alfonso X and his Toledo translators, neither the Italian Renaissance, nor the Western World we have today would have ever existed and the world would be very different from what it is now. You can say that the Italian Renaissance has it's origin in Toledo, from Alfonso X hands.
Wow - that's giving the man a lot of credit. You have the same mindset as Simon Doubleday - the man who wrote the book which I based a lot of this episode on. He believes that there was a Castilian Renaissance before there was a Renaissance. But you have to give the Italian city states credit as well.
@@FlashPointHx Yes, I do, but the point is that everybody knows about the Italian Renaissance, but nobody knows about the great importance of Alfonso the X and his Toledo school of translators who are he real keys and turning point in history. No Spanish empire would have ever existed nor western civilization neither as we know it without this (ignored) Spanish Renaissance.
There you are totally correct - problem is that Toledo was an Islamic center of learning before it fell into Christian hands in 1085. It’s hard for many to accept this as a very potent influence in the rebirth of learning in Europe.

The Muslim Hispania, Al-Andalus, was extremely important gathering all the knowledge from east to west until the point that some words like algebra, algorithm, the 0 concept, the numbers as we use today, comes from Al-Andalus that worked as a real factory of knowledge that created the foundaments of our western civilization.

I feel sorry for Alphonso. He made lots of wrong decisions, he didn't achieve his life-long goal of becoming emperor, he faced countless fights with his nobles and friends, and especially he lost his first-borne and cherished son without being with him at his deathbed. A parent should never bury his child. But he also achieved a lot and he left his mark in history. In addition, you must admire the man's ability to slip out of a problematic situation,like his son's rebellion. Lesser kings would have lost their throne and been imprisoned.

You forgot mentioning that he created the Toledo's translators school where wise men from the three cultures (islamic jewish christian) translated and preserved ancient texts such as the greek texts rescued bu the muslims. Thanks to that, lots of ancient texts survived. Also during his reign, all three cultures lived together in peace and shared their knowledge between them. Even people from the neighbouring kingdoms came to Toledo. As far as i know, is the only one who could unite the three cultures.
Also it's quite a shame you didn't put any of his songs in the video, some of them are really good and have that medieval feel to it, instead of using guitar songs which are very futuristic but the video was great. It's not anybody's fault this man did so many good things.

It's such a shame, maybe those performances are copyrighted to those who played them, but iv'e also seen very nice covers of the cantigas. Maybe you could use one of those, they are made by regular people hahaha
It's not mandatory, it's just me wanting foreigners to see that Spain has medieval music as well. Some people think in spain there's only flamenco. But then they listen to spanish medieval music or classical music without even knowing it.

Alfonso X, a very interesting character. I don't know whether he was as good a king as his father, a better king, or a worse king. I guess cases could be made for all three. Regardless this stuff is better than anything you could find on TV. Full of plot twists all over. When Alfonso left to meet the pope and you said father and son will never meet again, I was expecting Alfonso to die. His son randomly getting sick and dying was a complete surprise. And then of course that shocking alliance with the Maranids. And then finally, when he didn't execute his son and then forgiving him later, even giving him back his inheritence. My favourite part of history is that it's better than anything the human imagination can come up with.
P. S Is Mohammed's ladder the story of his journey to Jerusalem and ascension into the heavens? Or is it something else? I would find it amusing actually if Dante's divine comedy was based on Mohammed.

Thank you so much for making this comment! When I was creating this episode I kept coming across these plot twists and I arranged the video to emphasize them. I left the 4th video on a cliff hanger - where "father and son would never meet again". I'm happy that you appreciated this! Someone commented they didn't like the cliffhanger approach, but I think it makes the history more engaging. Along with the other twists in fate that you have mentioned. The best part as you stated was, this actually happened. Again, thank you so much for recognizing this!
As for Muhammed's ladder - I haven't read it, just the synopsis - but it is about his Journey to Heaven. Hence the divine comedy could have some of its inspiration in the Koran. Furthermore, Dante had respect for Islamic culture - indeed he placed great Islamic thinkers (readily coming to mind Averroes) in the first circle of hell along with exalted people like Plato and Aristotle.
As for the next episode - working on that now! It saddens me a little as we are coming to the end of Al Andalus. Take care!
@@FlashPointHx They way your doing it is very good. Humans naturally remember better when presented information in a narrative. And adding emotions like excitement and suspense should help imprint it further into our memory. Maybe that person disliked it because it's not what he's used to, but I think it's refreshing.

I'm in South Orange County, so I'm actually all about the road bike and about as hardcore as one can get for a partially disabled gimp and ex-amateur racer.
The only serious local dirt scene around here is xc, but the mountains northeast of LA are only about 1.5-2 hours away and have more serious mountain stuff. That's been my idea of a vacation in the past. Still, "a mountain bike is a great best friend, but a road bike is your lover."
If I ever get in physical shape to ride long *LONG* distances again I want to visit Marin County and ride the rest of the way to Canada.
At one point a friend and I were talking about doing a 4 corners of the US ride, but that's been indefinitely postponed...for now. Have fun :-)

That sounds awesome! Sounds like you really love mountain biking. I can totally understand where you’re coming from. I first got into mountain biking after I saw some people doing it in Moab Utah. Since that time I’ve been back to Moab at least four times. In fact, one of the first dates that my wife and I had was a mountain biking trip there. You seem so into it, I would recommend that at one point in your life you should get out to Moab.

The one near my house also has an insane wine selection (its about 20 minutes away from Napa) - i had a friend visit and brought an extra suit case just to stock up on vino.

The way I realize it is that if these Spanish Christians would have united themselves from the beginning instead of constantly fighting with each other,these series of battles would have ended way before 1492.
You are totally right. In fact after Alfonso X, Castile and Aragon would be at each other's throats. It was the only way that Granada would manage to live on for 250 years!

Well the Portuguese manage to finish everything by about 1249. At that point they had no more space on the Iberian Peninsula to expand into.

This was designed originally as a podcast - so I created one hour (ish) audio episodes for download on iTunes. The far I have 10 Episodes - and 2 bonus episodes. But for TH-cam I had to slice them up in to smaller parts. Episode XI is being produced now.

Okay. So i’ve looked this up on the few sources i can find. They all say that Sancho’s rebellion was actually successful, Alfonso’s alliance with the Marinids largely faied and he died ‘defeated and deserted’ in Seville and left the throne to his grandson in his will but Sancho disregarded this and became King in any case as he had the support of the nobility. This is very different to the triumphant ending portrayed here.
I think I've read some of these same references - but they consider it 'successful' because he became the next king - not so much as his father putting back in line. A lot of sources gloss over the conflict involved
Flash Point History even apart from his coronation as King, it says that the Marinid-Alfonso alliance was largelybdefeated and that Alfonso died a broken man having effectively lost most of Castille. I looked at a couple of Spanish language videos here and they say the same.
@@philipampofo6435 I saw some of these references as well and there is no doubt that the man died a broken man. But again the sources I found on him were not always consistent. In the end, I based my narrative from Simon Doubleday's book "The Wise King" - I even contacted the man on his sources via twitter. From all the sources out there, he seems to have dedicated a portion of his life to coming up with this book and he bases this on a massive collection of references.
Netflix series please! They fan fund stupid ass shows they can make a good one with this. Just use these videos as backbone and you have an amazing series.

Ah gotcha - thanks! yeah, as the name implies it was about the four generations of the Castilian monarchy during a critical time period of the Reconquista. When I did the research for this time period, this amazing relationship seemed to gleam.
I just decided to watch this series again, because the videos are so awesome.
One point caught my attention.
I know you had to keep the video from getting too long. So, I understand why you didn't say much about it.
But, the illness of Ferdinand must have been pretty shocking to all those around him. Trying to even imagine the pain he (as well as his father who had to outlive him) must have gone through in his illness is pretty hard for me.
Really sad moment for Alphonso, Ferdinand, and most of their supporters.
I pressed F to pay respects. :/
This is an awesome comment! Love the fact that you are re-watching the series. Sad to say about Ferdinand de la Cerda that there just isn't that much info on him out there. I read through Kennedy, O'callaghan, Catlas, and a few others. I even contacted the author of "The Wise King" - Doubleday to see if he knew anything. A buddy of mine who lives in Spain and is creating The History of Spain podcast - even he had little knowledge of Ferdinand's death. Finally got desperate and looked at wikipedia - Nada . Most times I limit the info to keep the narrative flowing. The idea is to welcome in people who are new to the field and encourage them to look deeper if so inclined. Alas in this case there just wasn't any more information (that I could find) about the illness that took the young prince's life. Thanks for watching! What about Alphonso's wife, by the way? She sounds like an intelligent and smart lady, and could probably have had a video of her own, if we knew more about her. Do we know more about her than what you have mentoned here, in this series?

@@nbrocx4216 I say this because you put time and effort in your comments. Its good to see that my videos invoke people to think about history and the people of the past. As for Alphonso's wife - Yolant of Aragon - there is a lot of information on her. She came from noble blood and was an extremely intelligent woman. She had to broker the relations between her husband who was the King of Castile and her Father who was the King of Aragon. During the latter portion of Alphonso's reign when he was having major difficulties after the death of his son, she left him and when to reside with her father in Aragon. There was major drama to bring her back into the fold. Unfortunately that story was too much of a diversion. But again, its a good story that could have had its own video. I will be dedicating a lot of time to Isabella who is coming up soon.

Awesome. I watched a video on Isabella by 'Real Crusaders History'. That video was great. Isabella truly is a fascinating historical figure. Also, if i am not mistaken, figures like Columbus and Francisco de Almeida (who I know from Age of Empires 2 campaign xD) are during the time of her and Ferdinand's rule.

I read about Alphonso X as well as Sancho iV on wikipedia. And, it doesn't mention anything about Sancho's illness at the time. It says that Alphonso was forced to accept Sancho as successor, over his grandson(s).
Now, I have heard many say that Wiki isn't 100% accurate. But, after watching your video, I do feel like it seems unlikely that Alphonso would have forgiven his son and asked for...uh...his 'absolution' (I think that was the word used here.)
It probably makes more sense to me that Alphonso X still refused to forgive Sancho for what he did, and wanted his grandson to be the next king (with somebody as regent ofc), but was forced to accept Sancho as the next king.
However, the point you mentioned about Father-Son relationship is a very good one, and should be considered as a possibility too. After all, he wasn't Alphonso the Wise for no reason.
I don't know which viewpoint to believe. It is quite unfortunate though. Ferdinand de la Cerda's unexpected death, to me, is really sad. Probably, on par with the death of Edward the Black Prince. Just imagine, years of bloodshed could have been averted, had Edward not succumbed to disease.
I do not know a lot about history. So, I don't think I can understand what was the mentality and beliefs of people in those times. But, thanks a lot, man, for introducing me to Alphonso the Wise, his father Ferdinand, the 3 famous Abd-al-Rahmans, and last, but not least, Berenguela. I got interested in history only a few years ago, and channels like yours are greatly to thank.

When you get into history podcasting and then history youtubing- it is only a matter of time before you start meeting some of the other people that are doing it and you form a community. Whenever we see people bring up wikipedia as a source it usually brings a chuckle - its never a good reference. I used Simon Doubleday's book as he was very well researched and had an extensive bibliography. Furthermore he can read and write in medieval Castilian so he has the ability to look at more first source material. I actually contacted him via twitter to get a better understanding myself. That said - there is a great saying that "follow those who search for the truth - avoid those who feel they know the truth". No one can know for sure what happened during this time period - its based on an educated guess. People who leave comments stating that such and such event happened EXACTLY as they say - I find dismissible. The whole purpose of creating these videos is to get people interested so they can take that extra step and look for themselves. Hope this helps and again, thank you for the awesome comment!

I remember you telling in one video that 'Charles Martel was great...blah blah... but, in my opinion, he is slightly overrated.' That could have made some people attack you in the comment section. Yet, you were so bold to say it. Really admire that in you, man. I hope you continue doing this: giving your perspectives without being affected by what people might think. Because, to someoone, like me, who did not like history at one point of time, these perspectives are necessary. They are unique, and make me think about history from a different, amazing angle. @@FlashPointHx Hmm. I see. In the beginning of 2016 (when I first came across BazBattles and Kings&Generals), I used to clear my doubts about what was not mentioned in their videos, by going through wiki. Then, I realized it myself, that Wiki is not 100% accurate. Nothing is.
Also, a video by OverlySarcasticProductions tells how wiki is not good for learning directly, but, a very good site for the sources (primary as well as secondary) that the wiki authors use for history, which might atually be useful. I thought that was a cool idea. Maybe, a well-respected historian such as yourself could tell me if they are correct or not. Are they? xD
That saying....so beautiful. I have had so many doubts on history. And, I always thought, "History is written by winners. So, how can we be sure which parts of history are actually true, and which are absolutely made up to glorify people/empires?" Sadly. This never got answered for me.

First and foremost - your answers aren’t boring or long winded - they are thoughtful and engaging. That comment on Martel did give me a lot of flack - but that’s the point - to encourage discussion. It’s not just about the videos, but an online community where people can bring up their viewpoints. I’ve been at this ‘War of the Worlds’ series for two years. I’ve interacted with people from all walks of life and from all over the word that have brought me a better understanding of this history. People whose ancestors fought on both sides of the Reconquista or who live in the places that I’ve talked about. I can’t think of anything more enriching.

Thanks! Late 13th cen - we are still dealing with fancy plate mail and crazy long swords and crossbow. But we are rapidly heading into gunpowder. By 1344 you have Castilians using cannon on Nasrid (Granada) fortifications. Muslims would have this tech shortly thereafter. The guns (at least the cannon) get only bigger from there!
