- Want to add 10HP and lose 8 poounds with the same mod on your 350Z or G35? The lightweight crank pulleys are your answer. Changing the crank pulley out for an underdrive, lightweight crank pulley is a great wallet friendly mod for the VQ35DE. It will reduce the load on the crank by spinning the accessories slightly slower and the lighter pulleys have less inertia. The only pulleys worth messing with are thr crank, fan, and alternator pulley. The crank pulley will be about $250 from a good brand like Unorthodox Racing while the alternator pulley will be about $30 off eBay. The fan pulley can just be deleted and replaced with a shorter belt (which you'll need anyway).
Install isn't hard but I do walk you through the steps for each pulley.; it's a very DIY friendly mod. Two different dyno tests confirmed a consistent power gain throughout the rev range and I have not experienced a single issue over three years of using the part. You will also removed about 8 pounds off the very front of the car. It's a win-win. If you have a big sound system, just get a light weight crank pulley; the underdrive may slow the alternator too much for the extra power needed from a big system.
