The Ernie version is like so many story songs Geoff has covered: very simple, repetitive and with a very limited vocal range. Then Geoff gets ahold of it and it’s now complex, interesting and with an astonishing vocal range. He is the best!
That’s kind of like what I said about Shenandoah. I’d never heard of the song before, so I looked up the original first. It left me flat and did nothing for me. Then Geoff breathed life into it and made it a song.
I’m especially impressed by the way he and his clones seem to make eye contact with each other. He’s not just looking in their direction, but actually looking at them. The only way I can think of to explain it is that he has someone else standing/sitting there to focus on.
Ok…let me see…I would say Tennessee Ernie started it…but Florida Geoff took it to the finish line…in SPADES! and shovels…and picks…and sledge hammers…and ladders…oh and lots of clones singing harmony! Way to go Florida with-the-deepest-voice-ever Geoff!! ❤
I grew up listening to Tennessee Ford, this was the first video I had seen of Geoff and that was a year ago. I fell in love with his voice then. I prefer his version now.
You can’t really compare these two guys that each had their own sound and I like both of them, but I’m a big fan of bass singers so I’m gonna say I love Jeff’s version in his bridge that he wrote and put in. He is just the man I’m obsessed.❣️
Thank you Huldra for this side to side comparison 😘 I didn’t know the original before. I like the original - but Geoff is Geoff 🥰 No need to say more 😁😘
I think Ernie's version was my first favorite song. At least the first I remember 70 or so years later. It was in Enid, OK and could have been on WLS out of Chicago but was probably a local station. It is also the First of Geoff's songs I heard.
Have you seen the one someone made of The Headless Horseman with Geoff and Thurl Ravenscroft? It has Geoff on one speaker and Thurl on the other, playing at the same time, so it’s best with headphones.
This shows again that Geoff is a master of adding bridges and whatever it needs to make a song not only his own but also give it a certain touch. It feels like he completed the song with these added parts. Thank you huldra.
Equal goodness! Neither better than the other, just different. Still, I'd be lying if I said that Bassiness didn't give me quivers! Although the "Well, bless my soul!" definitely goes to Geoff. 💙
Whenever I'm watching the video, when it gets to the part with "if my left one don't get you then the right one will" I think "yeah, and I bet he could back that statement up, too." I wouldn't want to be the one who pushed Geoff into a fight.
Geoff gives this song a “chain gang” feel. That feeling of dread, kinda like a “dear Lord…another day in the pit…🤣🤣🤣🙌🏻 So definitely a more mournful, hopeless sound…as we always say…he makes songs “make sense..a whole new way of interpreting what it SHOULD sound like…..I hope that rambling made sense…😂😂😂🙌🏻❤️ Geoff wins again!!
I think part of that ‘chain gang feel’ comes from his inspired use of the tools. While they echo mining tools sounds, that kind of metallic clang of the pick ax sounds a lot like the jangle of chains!

This was the first song I heard from Geoff. After that I became addicted to his voice. His voice is unique.
Thanks , Huldra.🙌🙏
Loved Ernie way back when I was young and if Geoff hadn't done this cover I would never have found him or VoicePlay.
@@Broomrider1492 That's such a nice story-You took a walk down memory lane and found VoicePlay!☺️❤️
This song was a childhood favorite but now Geoff's version is the Only one for me. Thanks, Huldra!❤
Loved this. I hadn't realized Geoff added a bridge. I love watching the clones. Geoff really puts a lot of work into the visuals.

I don't have anyting against Tennessee Ernie Ford, but this song definitely needed Geoff! ❤

Tennessee Ernie Ford was a wonderful singer, wonderful personality. That said, Geoff's version is more moving and suits the mood better.

I love this side by side. Thanks Huldra!
I heard this song first on Spanish since my grandma loves it, but Geoff voice just gives it a fresh air for new audiences with his deep melodic voice.

Geoff gets my vote every time😀
Thank you Huldra for this side to side comparison 😘 I didn’t know the original before. I like the original - but Geoff is Geoff 🥰 No need to say more 😁😘
Ich finde die erzählende Art von Geoff einfach so genial!
Geoffs Bass ist wie geschaffen für den Song. Für mich kommt nur Geoff in Frage.❤❤🎉 Danke Huldra 👍
being old and boring I had heard this before Geoff but I love what he did with it ❤
These comparisons are always so fun to watch and listen. Amazing what Geoff can do with a simple song! Thanks again Huldra!

Lower, grittier, a song about debt for the 2020s - no surprise it was a hit! I'd heard it before, but Geoff's is the definitive version for me.

I have, yes

Thanks Huldra 😊
This is quite fascinating ! Thank you Huldra 😃
Monster Mash in Geoff's performance also sounds better than the original. Way better.
One key difference: Geoff's straw boss was Tony the Tiger! 😎
😄
While Ernie and Geoff are both amazing, let's give credit and thanks to Huldra for all the time and work she puts in for us.

Geoff. Nuff said.
Whenever I'm watching the video, when it gets to the part with "if my left one don't get you then the right one will" I think "yeah, and I bet he could back that statement up, too." I wouldn't want to be the one who pushed Geoff into a fight.

I know what you mean. He slowed it down a bit, took it down a few notches, and took the "jazzy" feel out of it.
I always wanted mythbusters to do an episode to see if people could lift 16 tons of rock in a day :-).
Oh, it's quite possible. It was the requirement for getting the job 😄
I have to say that the original was a bit bland and I didn't like the jauntiness. Liked Geoff's version much more!
Tennessee or Florida??
