The original feels sad and hopeless. With Geoff's version you can hear the joy of the days passed, the sorrow of the present, and a bit of hope for the future.
I love the mood Clamavi de Profundis sets, and of course they deserve full props for coming up with the tune to set to this magnificent poem. I love how Geoff took it to the next level, both with the clarity of his voice and his marvelous range, but also varying the tempo and backing instrumentation to keep the song fresh and interesting
I love the accent from Clamavi…but again..the depths at which you feel Geoff’s version are heart wrenching. That’s why I listen to songs before I watch the video…to feel it. The more it moves me or gives me goosebumps…you got a great arrangement!!! ❤️🥰🙌🏻
Geoff's voice gives the words more feeling and is not flat like the original. He brings it to life. Geoff makes it more than just a song, he is telling a story which seeps into your soul.
I was Hoping you would do a comparison of these! ❤ I have been listening to Geoff's version on a Loop since it was released. I admire Clamavi's creation but Geoff's voice takes it to Another level! So moving! So soothing! It speaks of honoring and Making Peace with death and loss. Once again I find Geoff's music helps me to find my own peace. Thank you Huldra for providing these tributes and comparisons for us!❤
Couldn't have said it better myself. What you said about him bringing you peace. That's why I have some of his, Voiceplay, Pattycake and Clamavi songs I call my "lullabies". They bring me peace when I'm laying down relaxing or going to sleep. They help clear my mind so I have a more restful sleep. And don't think about 5 million things which usually wake me up. Which one I listen to depends on which my mind wants to listen to. Usually Geoff or Pattycake's newest.
As someone who has never read or seen anything from LOTR I judge only by the songs themselves with no background as to the characters or story involved. I find the original to be nice but I would never listen to it again but Geoff's version has so much depth & intensity it draws me in and makes me feel for these people even without knowing the story. And thank you, Huldra, as always for these comparisons. I always enjoy them.
Thank you dear Huldra. I really like the accent from Clamavi but Geoff‘s version hits me so hard emotional 🥹 Every time I hear it I am getting goosebumps and shivers and tear up. I „feel“ Geoff‘s version
Definitely feels more legato than the original (or at least the words are stretched out a bit more - Idk much music theory) Also I know Peter Barber has observed that Geoff often likes to add a "drive" to songs where there isn't much of one originally, and this is another example! (And I love it!!!)
In the middle of rereading LOTR again. Yesterday evening I passed Balins Tomb in Moria. Gimli is such a interesting character. This is best company to the books.❤
Great comparison, Huldra, thank you for taking the time to do this! Personally I prefer Geoff's version; it is far more interesting and expressive musically as well as vocally. But the biggest improvement to me is that Geoff is far more understandable! Since there's a story being told I think it's important for the words to be sung as clearly as possible. I really have to listen hard to understand the original song, and I'm still not certain of every word. I enjoy the accents employed, but that doesn't make up for the loss of clarity.
There's more dynamic variation in Geoff's version and no prominent "Celtic accent". I would not have looked for the inspiration song, so this is a treat.
they're both just so good, i don't think it's really worth comparing or trying to decide which is better. they're doing different things entirely. the clamavi version is just a group of dwarves singing as they're walking along, sounds like their in a cave because of the echoes. geoff's is just... geoff being geoff really. i love both of them and am so glad to hvae been able to hear both versions. same with the version colm put out, along with peter hollens. all so, so good. such an insane time to be alive to be able to get access to all of this, thirty years ago we'd never have found ANY OF THIS.
Thank you for taking the time to do this! When Geoff mentioned the Clamavi de Profundis version in his description, I found it and listened to it. While both versions are great, I'm just amazed that one man was able to create a comparable version by himself!
Although clamavi's version is really good, I prefer Geoff's redention. With clamavi it's more a feeling that someone is telling a story about the dwarves. Could be anyone from middle earth. But with Geoff it is the feeling as if a dwarf is telling the story of his people and you don't want to miss a word or a note. And the spirits of the dwarves of the old ages are around. Thx for this beautiful comparison huldra 😊
Thanks for another interesting comparison, Huldra. Interesting to compare line by line. Of course I am biased, but I feel Geoff's arrangement is more "alive." The original seems like a lovely choral piece, but I don't feel the echoes of Moria as I do with Geoff's.
Wow. Never heard Clamavi's version before. I do have a few other songs of theirs on my playlist though. Both versions are absolutely beautiful. However Geoff's is much better. You can tell that's where his inspiration came from.
Geoff's rendition all the way! It digs deeper on feelings, it transmits more emotion! ❣ The only thing I prefer from the Clamavi's version is the accent, how they roll their rrrs. Can't help but wonder, how hard was it for Geoff to keep hand movements to a bare minimum! 🤣
I have to side with clavami on this because when it come to the song of Durin, you want to feel like the dwarves are singing the legend of the first dwarf. I feel like making it sound like a song of the Backstreet Boys or one direction just doesn’t capture the deep gruffness of that of a fantasy dwarf. Colm McGuiness captures that feeling so does clamavi Tolkien did such a good job worldbuilding a people who's golden age had come and long gone, and of portraying the deep heartbreak of those that still lived. I get misty whenever I hear Durin's song. But with Geoff it is upbeat and could fill one with hope of the new days to come, when that isn’t how the song is supposed to feel.
the upbeat part (which also Clamati de Profundis has, just less obvious) is during the part where they reminisce the rise and glory of the dwarven kingdom, a part in history that the dwarves would look back upon with pride and happiness. before going back to a more somber melody when Durin dies and the dwarf kingdom was going downhill again. I like both Geoff's version and the original by Clamati de Profundis, both beautiful renditions ❤️
Geoff, though the original is nice. I like the accent. But Geoff's voice is in a class by itself. 💙

Geoff's voice is always a balm for my ears and Life. Thank you, Huldra!
Kathy forgive me, but now I want to see Geoff and 12 clones perform.😂
I love both renditions but Geoffs seems more heartfelt. Thank you for letting us hear both back to back.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! When Geoff mentioned the Clamavi de Profundis version in his description, I found it and listened to it. While both versions are great, I'm just amazed that one man was able to create a comparable version by himself!

Hi Huldra, thank you for this. Geoffs cover to my ears is better, his voice (as always) sounds great 👍💕
Geoff's rendition sounds closer, more intimate, more alive.

Geoff's voice has more layers and feelings. His voice is so calming to me. I love the emotions that show up in his music. Such a beautiful gift.

Only Geoff has this expressive and extraordinary vokal range.

I have to say Geoff’s version is better. I agree with Morning Rose.

I wondered the same! A few hand gestures snuck in but nowhere near the normal amount. 😂
Thanks Huldra 😊
