    Stumbled on this video. As a turner of only a couple of years, this has got to be the most professional demonstration I’ve seen, having watched a lot! Many thanks

    I thought if I ever made it back to Ireland, I'd like to golf some of the courses there.
    After seeing your videos, I think I'd get far more enjoyment taking one of your classes & I shall, God willing.
    Your rim on bowls going from thick to thin is simply brilliant!
    I now turn them that way and there's such a great feeling.
    Thanks!

    Your plater is fantastic. I have only been turning for over a year. I have done bowls, bottle openers, and gnomes. I have been wanting to try and turn a plate/platter. Watching your video has shown me what I have to do. Just you let you know, I am watching your video in Idaho, USA. Thank you for video. Tony Bradshaw

    I felt I was there in your classroom, your student of woodturning once again. I also liked Loki's part in the video. I'd say that this video is one of your best.

    Glenn - I have been turning platters for a bit, and it is a favorite item of mine to turn. They are also very popular at markets, and at the stores where I sell my work. In watching your video I learned so many techniques, and design thoughts that I was able to incorporate into a platter that I turned today. Thank you so much for such an amazing video/tutorial. I hope to someday fly over and take a class with you. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

    Better than 1rst class work Glenn. Your pieces are stunningly beautiful. Watching your videos are an inspiration to myself. I'm a new turner & have so much to learn. I'm only taking myself to aim for an advanced, acceptable hobby level. The last time I used a lathe, other than messing around in my shed with the set up I've went & got myself, was at school - 40 years ago. I find your way of explaining, teaching & educating the method of turning relaxing, easy to understand, entertaining, enjoyable & has a way of keeping me interested & wanting to attempt & try things out. Thank you for this, it's certainly letting me see & understand the methods of wood turning

    That's tears it I'm coming to Ireland! I've watched dozens of woodturning videos and being a beginner it's easy to learn techniques that may not work so well for you. I'm going to take some lessons from a true master at his craft.

    Very nice plate Glenn. I have been turning for over 30 years. Enjoy it very much. Watching you turn the plate was very instructional. I like the way the finish brings out the grain. Always a thrill to see an Irish turner. Take care and stay safe. From Petawawa, Ontario, Canada.
    PS: I was born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.

    Absolutely marvellous! Clear explanation of how to go about the work and a fantastic demonstration of the use of the tools. I've come late to turning - about 60 years - my last attempts being when I was a 12 year old at school. I shall never be more than an amateur, but to be able to watch a consummate artist at work gives me the inspiration to improve my technique and produce pieces that I can be proud of. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your expertise.

    A beautiful plate. The figure in this piece is outstanding. It was really brought to life with the oil and wax finish. This has been a very educational and entertaining video. Very well produced. Excellent commentary. Thank you Glenn. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    What brand of respirator do you use? It looks so light weight which seems much more comfortable, but will it protect your face if something hit it? Really great instructional video Glenn!!

    I’ve recently started following you from Michigan. Why do you hold the sanding pads at an angle rather than using the whole surface?

  • @Saltchuck-46
    @Saltchuck-46 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When you are sanding the platter, is the sander running in forward or reverse?

    • @jltltj
      @jltltj หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've always been told the sander and lathe should be turning in opposite directions. So with the lathe spinning in it's normal counter clockwise direction the sander should be clockwise; it's normal forward direction. Remember also that relationship will change depending on the contact point on the disc; i.e. 9 o'clock is spinning up and 3 o'clock down.

    I admire your work and the calm with which you explain your work to us viewers. But something bothers me: You work on the dark side of the lathe.
    As an engineer, I also studied ergonomics in mechanical engineering and the handling of machine tools. With your professional accuracy and handling of safety devices (fresh air mask etc.), I cannot understand why you work on the side averted from the light. Isn't it possible to rotate the machine 180 degrees or to add additional lighting to brighten up the work area?
    On the other hand, I could understand if you say: I try to avoid hard shadows on the work piece because that way I can control the contours better. Is that the reason?
