Crafthub Tutorial - Pottery wheel tutorial

In this video you'll see the basic steps for modelling a pot on a potter's wheel, for beginners. The first step is to prepare the clay. You need to knead it so that any air bubbles in the clay are removed. Next, make a ball, about the size of the palm of your hand. On the potter's wheel, try to place this ball of clay in the centre of the disc. The clay must be centred before starting to open and shape the pot, because this way the piece will have more uniform walls, avoiding irregularities in thickness that can cause the piece to lose its structure or other manufacturing defects. To centre, you need to keep your arms always supported and press down on the clay while the disc rotates at maximum speed. Once in the centre, the speed of the disc should be reduced in order to obtain better control of the movements. From this point on, open a hole in the clay with your fingers. The clay must be distributed evenly, while climbing the walls of the pot, always pressing the fingers inside the piece against the supporting hand on the outside. The piece is shaped when the clay is more evenly distributed, and the walls are more homogeneous. Once the desired shape has been given, the excess clay must be removed from the disc using suitable tools. Once finished, cut off the bottom with a nylon or metal wire and remove the piece from the wheel. Before the first firing, add the desired finishes when the piece is drier and remember that it must be completely dry before it goes into the oven.

It's absurb to suggest that alum isn't "eco" enough for you and then jump many planes to go to the other side of the world, as if that is somehow fine. . I don't believe for a moment that the effect of vinegar is different from lemon or other acids

I just watched a video of a kid in India, or Pakistan making an amazing hot pot set out of wood by turning. He had absolutely no PPE. Quite a contrast to us here in the west where we are totally handicapped by it in many cases. I'm a firm advocate for safety glasses and gloves (where appropriate) but watching him saw a piece of wood, encumbered by a ridiculous amount of protection is mind blowing. Some tools and jobs are inherently dangerous, and one has to just be careful.

Truly a learning experience these two eco- printing iron mordant tutorials of yours, and, to think that my research on iron mordant began soon after viewing a tutorial on how iron mordant can be used to stain wood. Thank you for this uniquely creative well informed tutorial. Your tutorial truly caught my eyes attention because at first glance it resembles the leaf image patterns that are apparent in the Heliographic printing process.
After I saw how beautiful the onion skins dyed the fabric, I went to one of our grocery stores to their onion bin and collected all the loose onion skins that fell off the onions. No one in the store noticed what I was doing. Pethaps they thought she's helping clean out the bins rather than the help.

Im intrested in Printing in cotton too, I guess I could try this same process even if is the color doesnt get fixed so intense right?
You will still get prints on cotton, but they will be lighter and will fade faster from washing. I have also found that my prints on cotton are less crisp than on wool or silk. In the video, Nicola mordants and dyes the wool in one step; the aluminum pot, rusty metal, and copper pipe react with acids to create metallic salts (the mordants). Substantive dyes, like onion skins, can bind directly to protein fibres like wool, but are improved with the assistance of mordants. If you followed this method on cotton you would also get some amount of mordant assisting to bind the dye to the fabric. However, the mordants and dyes like to bind to each other more than the cotton, so you may get some dye+mordant precipitating in the liquid instead of binding to the fabric. Separating the mordanting and dyeing into two separate steps would improve the intensity of the result. You can first mordant the cotton by steeping in water with the mordant, whether that be a powdered mordant like alum added directly to water, or creating your own mordant by allowing rusty items or copper pieces to steep in an acid like vinegar (this is typically left to sit for a few weeks prior to use to get a strong enough mordant). Then you rinse away any excess mordant and then proceed to the eco printing step. Some people also use soy milk as a fixative by soaking the fabric in it, drying it, and soaking again, and repeating. This builds up layers of soy milk on the cotton. Soy milk is protein based so the results are more similar to the results you would get on wool. If you wanted to avoid working with powdered mordants this is another great option. It does take days to soak the fabric, and then it also needs a few weeks to cure before it is ready to be dyed for the best result. I personally mordant with alum (pickling salt, available alongside spices at the grocery store or bulk store) and often use a tiny amount of iron sulphate (same as from rusty metal). Aluminum salts like alum increase the wash and lightfastness and give bright saturated colours. Iron "saddens" colours, makes them darker and less saturated (shifts yellows to olives, oranges to reds, beiges to browns or greys). You can see a slight colour difference in this video between her iron wrapped fabric and copper (copper gives a greener result than aluminum). The Barefoot Dyer is a natural dyer who works exclusively with cellulose based fibres, and has a great video about ecoprinting.

When you are sanding the platter, is the sander running in forward or reverse?
I've always been told the sander and lathe should be turning in opposite directions. So with the lathe spinning in it's normal counter clockwise direction the sander should be clockwise; it's normal forward direction. Remember also that relationship will change depending on the contact point on the disc; i.e. 9 o'clock is spinning up and 3 o'clock down.
