  • Totem Acoustic's founder and chief designer, Vince Bruzzese, talks about the inspiration and design goals behind his company's newest speaker, the Signature One, which was created to celebrate the company's 30th anniversary. Totem was founded in 1987 with just one speaker model -- the legendary Model 1.

Beautiful speakers with care and attention to every detail. In this day of artificial everything it's nice to see real wood and effort made to choose only the finest materials available. The engineering is a huge step above the mundane volume consumer speaker market.

Still have model 1 going very strong, such an easy yet articulate speaker to listen to.

Totem makes fabulous speakers. Those who dismiss them have not listened to them. I personally own Rainmakers and Skys and love them both. I have owned over the past 30 years Paradigm, JBL, Infinity, Klipsch (Kg4) and Meadowlark Shearwaters, Paradigm and GoldenEar Triton 7s. I can honestly say the Totems are more musically satisfying than any of them. The Sky is a home run speaker.

I have previously owned Totem Acoustic Staaf's and the Hawks, many years ago. Selling my Totem Hawks still haunts me today. They can tip easily with grandkids running around - their only weakness. That said, Totem is one company that gives you magnificent quality and sound. Yes, they are not cheap, but....compared to more expensive brands, Totem beats them, hands down for performance per inch! Give a listen, once, of their Element Metal speaker towers - just unbelievable sound! For me, as good as it gets!

Very nice promotional video. Perhaps an inclusion of when they will be available might have been helpful

I am not sure those woofers are Dynaudio-made. Since Per Skaaning and Meir Mordechai split up to form Dynaudio and Morel respectively, other outfits (hi-vi, dynavox, dayton audio, and I think even MB Quart with the Vera line) have built woofers that also use a large diameter coil, following the direction originally shown by Skaaning. I am especially interested in Dynavox, because they seem intent on replicating original Dynaudio design goals and their drivers seem to perform well, if not quite up to Dynaudio's level in the area of selecting the polymer and thickness for forming the cone to maximize mechanical damping while controlling resonance of the large dust cap, but their 6-1/2" model has extraordinarily flat natural frequency response that would allow a first-order high pass if desired. Dayton Audio went the way of a woven glass fiber skin to overcome the shortcomings of polypropylene in rigidity, making them a slightly better low frequency device, which they have matched up with long cone excursion by way of the neodymium motor they use. I have some Dayton Audio Esoteric-series drivers that I hope to use in a two-way system this year with Seas DXT tweeters that I also have. But the one in the Totem speaker shown here appears to be manufactured by Hi-Vi (D6.8 or a similar custom effort), and it is also a very good unit. Totem's relationship with that part extends back to the Forest towers, although the original Mani-2 monitors used Dynaudio because they still made their transducers available off the shelf at that time. So I trust that Totem knows how to get the best from that part. Anyhow, the sourcing of the woofer means next to nothing if the integration of drivers and the overall performance are not highly competent, and I admire Soundstage for making anechoic chamber measurements available for the speakers they test, to correlate good sound with excellent technical performance.

In looking at the Totem Forest's changes over the years, it appears that Totem at some point switched from Dynaudio to a Canadian Built ATI woofer that Totem believed outperformed the originally used driver. ATI was then purchased by HiVi, and all manufacturing/design was moved to China. The images of the woofer in this video, as well as the specifications, seem very similar to the HiVi D6.8B.

I just ordered a pair of Sig 1's used, from The Music Room in Colorado as the last crucial piece of a High-End system I have been building over the months. I can't wait to get them next week !! I have always been a huge fan of Dynaudio Speakers/Drivers. And with their clear, yet Timbrally-True tone and Vince's passion, you can't miss with Totem. I almost bought the Dreamcatcher which are nice, but these have much more Bass and are also non-fatiguing in the treble. Magnifico !!

indopleaser, if you don't understand what the President and Designer of Totem Speakers said than please feel free to ask the question. But to criticize without understanding or making an effort to understand is a display of your ignorance and a lack of judgement.
