A necessary stepping stone to the Switch. Imagine if this "failure" caused Nintendo to give up. Just got my Switch Oled yesterday and it's a thing of beauty... I'm grateful for that Wii U era.
Looking back on it now, they 100% presented the Wii U as a controller peripheral add-on to the existing Wii system as opposed to a brand new system. This was a case of seriously overthinking it. Thank god Nintendo recovered though.
I'd argue that Sony's conference in 2013 where they announced the Playstation 4 and completely buried Microsoft was the best. With how bad Nintendo explained the Wii U here, I would argue that this was one of their worst conferences

Going from memory, I would say that Sony's E3 2016 press conference was the best. However, I'm going to watch every press conference, starting with the 2005 press conferences (when the competition really started to heat up) through Microsoft's final E3 briefing in 2019 and see if I change my mind about that. I remember a great Kevin Butler moment in Sony's E3 2010 conference that could sway my opinion. But we'll see what happens. And yes, I agree that Nintendo would shine even brighter in front of a live audience. It's a real shame they dropped that in favor of the Directs.
Great console in some ways, the Wii U, but Nintendo really should've had the console a little more prominently featured, instead of just going on about the "new controller", making it seem like an accessory. I was never confused about it being a console but watching this by itself, I can see how someone might think that.

They're literally saving millions of dollars, but the Direct videos aren't nearly as fun or lively. There's nothing like having a live audience during the presentations. I would watch every press conference, live, as it happened. With the Directs (or Microsoft or Sony videos), I just look at each of the game trailers as they show up separately in my feed. I don't watch the full videos.
I remember that this same day, two hours later, Sony was all about pushing their active 3D technology in TVs, asking people to put silly glasses on an off. This is the day 3D TV died, when Nintendo showed that 3D without glasses was possible.
The last good E3 Nintendo had I remember this day greatly it was on my 16th birthday and after waiting for 10 years Luigi's Mansion 2 was finally revealed imagine my happiness.

Yup, while I loved my Wii u & did it have a good amount of fun games. Towards the last year I used it back in 2018 before ultimate came out all I was playing on it was smash for Wii u, Mario kart 8, & some Mario party 2 with friends on the virtual console. Still so many good games, 3D world Mario, Splatoon, Nintendo-Land, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Maker, Captain Toad, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Twilight Princess HD, Wind Waker HD, DK Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, etc .. there was a few other but those games stood out to me on the console. I wish the gamepad would of had more games like Nintendo Land the replay value for multiplayer was insane & extremely fun. Was great for parties & get togethers with 5 people playing was legit so much madness & fun.
Dude, I am a core gamer and I want this controller, I mean, imagine running a rts on this, you select your units with the touch pad, and you select where they go, and then touch a button and select units to build by touching icons on the pad while your controlling forces on another part of the map, or an RPG, where you can select abilities, or even have an isometric view of the battlefield on the pad while you have standard view on the screen. No other console could do that.

Any game on 360 could be played on an Xbox, it just wouldn't look as good. 4. Comes with an adapter for Plug N' Play like feature. 5. You already have a 360. Play games on a console.

It's just rushing to the finish line with no time to let people really know what they're buying into. I don't think the Xbox One even got revealed until E3 2013 (at least the PS4 was first revealed in February of that year). Even the Switch only had like, what, five months of build before it dropped in March of 2017?
when i count graphics i kinda count gameplay in that too. I would play the NES all day (and i do) but i like that the xbox looks almost real on some games. it doesnt matter anymore though, they all have 1080p graphics now.
