LOT of interesting stuff illustrated in this short film. Emotionally, it really shows the sad divide between generations, and those things that are important to us at different stages of our lives. Youth doesn't understand the work and passion that go into something like a completely home-made meal, and the youngest generations often _can't_ understand it because they've never done it, or maybe don't even get them with parents who are always too busy, like her mother appears to be. Certainly also shows the challenges of technology for non-technical people, and yet, also shows how people a little _too_ comfortable with technology can be almost dismissive of the risks. Heh, though on a sidenote, as a Network Administrator, I have to wonder what sort of crazy company builds something that has all memory and configuration wiped by a software update! Jeez, my job would be even more a nightmare if that were true of everything. Very great fun film, and really has some great life-lessons on a lot of fronts. Loved the way it was filmed and presented.
yes i can understand rosa's upset at toto being new again, my granny has trouble everytime she needs a new phone, its the same to us but not to her and its alot harder for them to relearn things. she would have to teach toto everything all over again and thats alot for an elderly person.
@@LordGreavous Yes - when she was still around, my grandmother didn't get a lot of technology and didn't have the patience for it. In Rosa's case, it's also extra negative in that she _did_ teach TOTO, but then all that effort was lost by a great grand-daughter that didn't even comprehend why her actions were hurtful. It makes TOTO an excellent metaphor for how technology and generational divides can create misunderstandings.
Of course a child hasn't yet truly appreciated alot of things. That's why they're children. I used to take my grandma's cooking for granted. If grandma is still around when she's older, she will finally understand. Dogbert once made an analogy that today's human brain is a teacup being filled with a fire-hose.

I am a grandmother with only one grandchild. She has become like this girl--always looking at her phone, never has time to stay and watch a DVD, says I drive too slowly, gasps if I ask her to do something that saves me climbing stairs, is irritated if I miss a word as she speaks. I speak to her using three different languages so she will pick up simple phrases, teach her basic cooking, talk about her relatives of several generations back, show her how saying something or doing something kind for someone makes her feel happy, tell her to always do what she feels is right, even if it is against the law, and encourage her to travel and know the world, meeting people along the way. I never had a grandmother but wish I had.
This is why I try and visit my grandparents as much as possible and I’m trying to learn how to cook from them too. It’s hard being an old person, especially when you’re alone and people rarely visit.

Just a lovely short film, a bit happy a bit sad, perfectly dosed, Rosa was perfect (I felt like I was with a real person, not an actress). Great way to spend ten minutes, left me with a small smile after a perfectly executed small piece of art, thank you!
Definitely shows the lack of appreciation from the younger generation. A generation which grew up that takes everything for granted instead of appreciating what they actually have. Well done!
I remember a lady like this from 65 years in my past. When she brought out the Spaghetti she used to say mangia, mangia!! This was a very lovely short video. Thanks
Wonderful short film, It brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me of a few years ago. My mom was having problems hearing her flip phone, with Bluetooth. I brought her to the cell phone store, so they could program it to work through her hearing aids. Rather than doing this one simple task they tried selling her a smart watch saying was what she needed. My mom was 80 at the time and barely knew how to turn on her computer. She had no need or desire to learn anything more. That's why she had a flip phone rather than a smartphone. Shortly before my mom passed I learned about a USA based cellphone manufacturering company who knows about this and designed their entire product line around seniors. Trying to make things easier for them with bigger buttons, louder volume and so on. However they weren't available in Canada at that time.
I wouldn't have understood this a few years back, but now that I'm approaching sixty I can feel it in my bones. The younger generations can't understand, they haven't yet experienced enough, but there comes a time when you realize the best things in life are found closer to home.
Excellent little movie! Very relatable about how good devices are getting ruined by infamous system updates, and the careless generation of consumers who just mindlessly say yes to whatever the industry is shoving down our throats. - In fact I'm surprized that the old lady was even given a choise of updating or not.. Here in the real world most of the operating systems manufacturers have long since abandoned the good principle of asking for the user's consent first.
a decent update should back up, do the update, then restore (import / translate if necessary) the backup so data isn't lost. I consider reckless or intentional data loss a failure of design.
this made me think about getting older and i am glad i was around for my granny til 98 . thank you. now i shall stay even longer at the senior center i visit and call a lil longer
Rosa, You are so brave to make this film. I miss my grandmother. She has been gone more than 30 years. But I see her in you. Thank you for bringing my grandmother back to me for a little while. It has been a blessing.
Pretty sure your Dad and mine were cut from the same cloth. “Wait until your father comes home” and “If I have to pull this car over…” weren’t idle threats, either. LOL
Learning it then is better than being spoiled and given what you want. My parents - exhausted with work, severe medical conditions, my older siblings, and having kids late, found it easier to let me eat whatever. To let me get away with whatever. I lacked discipline. As a result, I lack discipline and willpower now. I could wear them down and get away with things. I was a good student and likable, so the trend continued. I had a rough homelife so the teachers wanted me to succeed. And I was smart so i did. But you can't tire out your boss and get away with stuff. Eating crap now means I'm chubby. Don't get me wrong there's no one to blame but myself. I started working at 12 so that's served me well. I moved out at 16 so I am capable of self-sufficiency. But lasting success has eluded me, where a more disciplined person - even far less intelligent - would've found great success.
Congratulations to Marco Baldonado and Rosa Forlano, her perfomance was incredibly good. Ambientation, script, roles, photography (that figure of Jesus Christ, where the size, the background and its milimetrical ubication, provide to the scene with an exceptional witness ), sci-fi with that C-9007 called "toto" and his umbilical charging cord was designed and developed with care. The unique contribution of the Italian language that always dress with musicality, humanity, personality and tenderness wherever it is pronnounced, was also a great sucess. That lady whose wrinkles on her face not only reflect the passage of life but knowledge and wisdom, does not need any robot to perform and give herself to others on a day-to-day basis, she would never have burned her pizza.

This is so relatable. So often i will ask elderly freinds or family why they never turn their phones on. Grumpy reply "Because no one ever calls me on it!"
As an adult child who learned to cook from watching and following the instructions of his mother, I now understand that the generational gap and appreciation for simple yet wholesome things like homecooked meals can be met through teaching and spending a lot of time with family. The source of the problem is this movie lies with the middle generation, i e adult daughter/granddaughter too "busy" to dedicate that time and views granny mainly as a babysitter. Children are naturally curious and helpful. If you teach them young enough and get them involved, be it in the kitchen for instance, some of that culty has a chance at passing on to the next generation. More importantly it will bring everyone closer together and make them understand and appreciate things that otherwise it would be impossible to know. The solution is for people to slow down and spend time with eachother rather than popping out kids and teaching them nothing. Realistically, both somewhat optimistically but sadly as well, robot companions becoming mainstream doesn't appear to be farfetched the further along we go. But I believe that the message here is that although potentially really useful in some situations like providing companionship for the elderly or disabled, they cannot replace the need for family and more importantly a close-knit family bond.
That update was a gut punch in the feels. I was yelling at my screen "no no no!". It's a good story, heartwarming in reverse. I give it 5 out 5 chef kisses. 😚
I can relate. I spent over 40 years working in IT. Never had a clean operating system update. Many updates from the vendor caused more problems than they solved. Or upgrades were not done properly. Lots of data was lost because backups were not taken on a regular basis. Rosa was wise. "NO UPDATES".
This is perfect. I feel the same way about new tech as the old lady - one day I finally understand it, things become smooth, and then an update and I would rather not relearn it.
That could've been my grandma, except mine came to the U.S. when she was young and spoke English very well. If I'd not eaten her pasta, the heartbroken look I would've gotten would force me to eat, even if I'd just come from dinner at my parent's house (that actually happened when I was home on leave) and I would just eat until I hurt.
Beautiful but sad that younger generations don't know the struggles of their elders nor do they want to. The only things new are what have been forgotten.
One of the best things i did was voluntering for a summer job at the nursery home. The stories and life advice you get are amazing. Would recommend anyone regardless to do that.
Likewise, the older generations generally don't want to hear the struggles of the newer generations, arguing that they know what's best because it worked for them. The conversation must go both ways, and often does when families remain closer and more open to listening.
I was going to say what Birchwood said. The elders don't take anything the newer generation does seriously. Unfortunately it's just the way it has always been.
actually quite endearing. don't know why everyone says it's depressing. I'm sure all it's trying to say is respect your elders, which I think most people do but children are often too naive to understand when they maybe aren't
Oh che bello un cortometraggio in italiano! Troppo contento! Grande Marco, grande lavoro davvero! La storia di Toto e Rosa mi è piaciuta troppo! Spero che ci sia un seguito! Ciao 🍝
Wonderful! Expertly written, and superbly directed. Acting by Rosa Forlano is a tour de force! The problems being analogue in a digital world. Sweet. Bravo!
Great short film!!! It really portrayed well the way old people are basically ignored by younger people, even family. No one listened to her. Very well done!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This great on so many levels. I'm not of Italian or Greek descent so I did not have a Nonna as such but I know the type of lady. Her heartbreak when the TOTO was updated and had its memory wiped in the process is beautifully portrayed by the writing and the the acting. Much as I love my modern technology I sometimes wish programmers would remember the principle of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" Too often the gains made by a software update are countered by the loss of a valued functionality.
I really appreciate the story. I hate that Grams built rapport with the robot and the little girl updated the thing. I see a lot in the comments about the generation gap. The girl is a child. She hasn’t had enough life experience to be grateful for the pasta. At her age, I’d probably want pizza, too. A short story that introduced and maintained my empathy for the characters and left me wanting more, but at the same time, left me filling like I’ve enjoyed a full length film. Loved it.
Understanding of giving and receiving LOVE between generations and to respect each other’s and how much time we have for each other . I really enjoyed this . Sad but it shows the reality , everyone needs compassion in different ways
OMG I would have totally asked if I could have a few containers of pasta, even if I couldn't stay to eat. Real pasta made by an Italian grandmother must taste like heaven..🤗
It made me sad. There are a lot of reasons in this short to make me sad. Loosened family connections, isolation, loneliness, ungratefulness, aging… My grandmothers used to tell stories about their tough childhood, too. Stories about struggle and hunger and kindness. Later I learnt that they had never tell us the darkest things, such as deaths of their mothers and siblings and other hurtful events. Home-cooked food is the best! I would be happy to have any meal cooked by my grandmothers. Unfortunately, I can’t anymore. Be grateful for having your family around. I think that many of younger people do not appreciate home-cooked food because they don’t know how much it takes to cook anything. It happens to almost any activity. The girl was so ignorant to mess up with the device that was not her in the first place. She should have asked the owner - her grandma - if she could update the software and briefly explain all the pros and cons of it. And… what a weird software update that reset all settings and memory!
@@WilliamStonerock you’re right, but… I still think that children should be taught the right way to interact with someone else’s belongings. There should be respect and attention. I bet the girl would be upset, too, if grandma did the same thing to her tablet or phone.
My mom goes through this. Phone works as she wants and has gotten used to….until an update comes and changes things around a bit. Now she has to learn new things and doesn’t have the energy to. Awesome short.

I really enjoyed this. It wasn't depressing or sad. The Nana did something for the granddaughter in buying the Toto. The granddaughter did something for the grandmother in updating the Toto. In the end, the miscommunication is still communication, and they spent time together. 💛
Ah! Now it makes (even more) sense. The grandmother only got the Toto, for her granddaughter. I got distracted by the pasta- I could smell and taste it, and didn't pick up on the details that explained the last scene.
OMG! AWESOME video! But my grandmother would die if there was tomato sauce that came in a jar! Lol! She always said... tomato sauce comes from a vine NOT a jar! Love you grandma 😘😀
It's like that movie "Frank and the Robot". I'm now middle age, never had kids, but work in tech and have generally kept up with technology. I hope digital assistants like this will be common and affordable in my old age. Just like Japan's aging population, there are many Americans that never had kids. Weird that a new robot is kinda dingy looking - also, software updates shouldn't erase important memory...

Hey, that was for grandma! To make her day to day life a little easier and less lonely. And little granddaughter erased all of Grandma's work and happy memories with Toto. 😔 And the Mom, Rosa's daughter, saying she's going to help her with it, there's no way that will ever happen. We all need Rosa in our lives. Mother should focus on her child not to be so dismissive.
Beautiful but sad that younger generations don't know the struggles of their elders nor do they want to. The only things new are what have been forgotten.
So true.
@@birchwwolf Say that when you reach your old days and cannot easily tolerate some things!
actually quite endearing. don't know why everyone says it's depressing. I'm sure all it's trying to say is respect your elders, which I think most people do but children are often too naive to understand when they maybe aren't
You knocked this one out of the park. Perfect casting and you can tell the music was a labour of love.
I just showed my Nonna. She was like "That's-a me!" "That's Nonna!" and also she liked the music at the end.
Oh che bello un cortometraggio in italiano! Troppo contento! Grande Marco, grande lavoro davvero! La storia di Toto e Rosa mi è piaciuta troppo! Spero che ci sia un seguito! Ciao 🍝
Re: "Spero che ci sia un seguito!"
Si si! Subito!

This should be a movie. Congrats to the director.
this made me want to be Italian. much love to Nonna, Marco & the rest of the cast & crew for this incredible piece !
Best short Sci Fi I’ve seen in Years. Congratulations and Thank You 🙏🏻
One of the BEST short film at DUST!
Nice simple story, - Very Human!
this was really well made, it really shows the separation of older generations to newer ones
I enjoyed her acting. Would love to see more of main actress Rosa
This great on so many levels. I'm not of Italian or Greek descent so I did not have a Nonna as such but I know the type of lady. Her heartbreak when the TOTO was updated and had its memory wiped in the process is beautifully portrayed by the writing and the the acting.
Much as I love my modern technology I sometimes wish programmers would remember the principle of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
Too often the gains made by a software update are countered by the loss of a valued functionality.
So relatable!! That's why my parents hate to update their phones
Certified Gold!!!!!
Loved it.
This is my most favorite Dust Sci Fi episode ever!! Bravo1
I would have happily sat down and eaten fresh, home cooked pasta with Rosa. What a treat. The child was spoilt and ungrateful.
Moraleja:
Why fix it if it ain't broken...
It takes one member in between, to break the tradition.
In the second generation, all may be lost...
Awe... Another good story that was way too short. Loved this grandma!
It made me sad. There are a lot of reasons in this short to make me sad. Loosened family connections, isolation, loneliness, ungratefulness, aging…
My grandmothers used to tell stories about their tough childhood, too.
Agreed, but the girl swims in tech and for her the update was just background noise. She likely thought she was helping.
@@WilliamStonerock you’re right, but… I still think that children should be taught the right way to interact with someone else’s belongings. There should be respect and attention. I bet the girl would be upset, too, if grandma did the same thing to her tablet or phone.
Please love your parents/ grandparents every single day. Take time to bond, talk.
For those old enough to remember, the Toto battery indicator at the very end of the film becomes deeply symbolic.
My mom goes through this. Phone works as she wants and has gotten used to….until an update comes and changes things around a bit. Now she has to learn new things and doesn’t have the energy to. Awesome short.
What a masterpiece!!!
...Made me sad, cause its actually the negligence that some people have to face in real life.
Loved it! Made me miss my grandma.
Poor grandma, gained and lost a friend in a day. Makes you want to go hug your grandmother, just because.
Your italian is perfetc, greatings from italy!
Hello my name is Jason, what a treat lol, many thanks to the team,I still have a short fused grandmother to this day. She acts the same in the kitchen when cooking tamales during fall into winter every time.👍👍👍
That pasta looked amazing . Avery good story line.
6:38 I just love the angry look he gave her. lol
Wow that is a lot sadder than I was expecting. Definitely worth a watch though.
These kind of videos are great 👍 please make more.
...very well done, message put across succinctly, nothing wasted.....what more could you want?
Beautiful, yet sad film. Hit harder than I thought. Brilliantly done.
Rosa was wonderful. Thank you.
This Is a masterpiece.
Bellissimo e profondo.
Sad but true.
Complimenti
Gosh, this is so delightful
Love it. A real life Baymax
wow... a rare Dust short that's actually pretty good
Just like the VCR when the power goes out! Lol
Nice work, loving the live action Big Hero 6 vibe, complete with Baymax and it's Panda Cosplay.
Not mocking you or the short, I genuinely love it.
Well made highly creative it takes a lot to make a film like this, congratulations. Molto bene.
The update should have preserved the memory
"This was such a great story, a little sad @ the end but very good, I love anything SCI-FI specially when there are robots in it, this was very well filmed , great acting and Direction, a fine job Marco,
Hey, that was for grandma! To make her day to day life a little easier and less lonely. And little granddaughter erased all of Grandma's work and happy memories with Toto. 😔
And the Mom, Rosa's daughter, saying she's going to help her with it, there's no way that will ever happen. Ten years later she'll still be talking about 'someday.' Someday never comes.
Well, I guess Rosa will just have to take time to teach Toto and make friends with him all over again. Don't let kids or anybody play with him unattended any more.
Toto is like my phone when it updates!
meraviglioso. complimenti! (wonderful!)
Impressive film. I enjoyed the live action take on Baymax and Rosa's story dealing with her solitude and entitled granddaughter.
I can't get enough of these
These mimics, this way of speaking, of going to the window, it reminds me of my grandmother. 😥
Exactly the way I expected it to end!! Well done!! How my mom was after her Google Home stopped working.
I really really love it!!
This looks like a sequel to the "no pwablem. No pwablem. No pwablem." robot short film.
not gonna lie, that spaghetti looked good! :) - Great short, and great acting!
I’m gonna show this to my Nonna soon. See what she thinks.
