Never thought a robot's lifeless eyes could show so much emotion without being expressly animated to show it. From curiousity, to caution, to compassion, realization, and ultimately trauma. Bravo~

I thought it’s meant to be the other way around; the robot, while we’re first shown its perspective as if it’s the protagonist, is really the bad guy trying to wipe out all living life forms. We’re lead to believe that because the living creatures are creepy looking, they’re supposed to be bad, but in reality they’re people trying to survive a world overtaken by killer robots. A display of how our judgements are skewed based on how information is presented to us, and how things ain’t always as they might seem.
I've had a story concept in my mind for a long time now, and this animation reminded me of it. It's a story of a robot in a somewhat distant future. A home servant robot, meant to protect and help the owner in times of need. The robot wakes up every day, does regular chores, fixes the house as much as it can and always stops by his owner's room. Every time he asks if he needs something. The only answer, however, is silence. The robot did not push any further, not daring to open the door, since his owner didn't give permission to do so. As time goes on, robot rusts and his parts become more faulty with each day. Woods rots and more weeds invade the house. Resources dwindle to fight these issues dwindle as well. Robot sends out requests, to schedule his diagnostic by a human or to buy materials online. The answer, however, is silence. Robot goes out himself, checking out nearby stores to buy what he needed. What robot does not realise is that the last active robot on the planet is himself. Robot still goes on with his chores as an error in the system is not allowing him to properly understand what's going on. For decades poor metal soul is doing everything it can to maintain life on this patch of land. For owner gone long time ago. One day he has to realise it as an alien spaceship touches down nearby to investigate a strange artificial signal which source appears to be in a human house unusually clean and maintained despite humanity's death. A short confrontation between the robot and aliens leads to the robot opening the door to his owner's room. A horrible sight which shakes robot's programming to the core. Being hit several times by alien weaponry robot got little time left, and as systems slowly shut down, the only thing he can do is embrace what is left of his owner. Final act of eternal loyalty to the human he cherished and cared about. Loyal, to the very end.
Loved every bit of this - especially the attention to detail in textures and lighting. Really liked that it was from the robot's perspective and that you could almost feel him working out the truth in the end... Great job!
What was the truth at the end ? Humanity has turned into monsters in some biological disaster and the robots are in charge now ? But what did the robot imagine the situation was before he looked at the pictures & saw the teddy bear ?

They either have brains in them, or they have software that is brain-shaped and remembers life before the apocalypse. The film hits a little harder if you see it as one person's realization that humanity is _dead_. There are posthuman robots and there are weird plant-demon-zombies, and both kinda ape humanity, but neither are human. In order to rebuild, the robot will be going in and killing the only other inheritor of humanity, and anything the monsters still knew of being human is going to be lost forever
Indeed! Getting enough funding is a crucial part of helping with keeping the story as realistic as possible. I am getting weary of see old abandoned warehouses, factories, junk yards etc. Having access to authentic looking props can really make a difference.
It could be that the abominations didn't even see themselves as having changed. It was touched on in one of the I Am Legend animations where everything is warped so the sick think they're fine but everyone else isn't. I'd like to see more backstory to this one.
I think it would be even more interesting if both the robots and the monsters were human at some point, based on how the robot seems to have emotions and human mannerisms. Imagine if a brutal pandemic appeared on earth and people found a way to avoid it by replacing their bodies with robotic parts, only to find what would have happened to them if they stayed completely organic (the monsters)
It's certainly possible, but some part of me still loves the idea of the robots just being robots, and with the fall of civilisation, they end up gaining sentience and become more human than the humans themselves. Them being humans from the start sort of takes away from that idea a little.
It could be that this is all set within a quarantine zone, and human operatives are controlling some of the robots like this one, or have uploaded into a network where they can control them

The cinematography in this is first rate. The texturing, render quality and deformation of parts of the protagonist that I'm pretty sure should not deform let it down though. Again, whoever storyboarded and set the shots in this short film did an astonishing job.
I love the post apocalyptic setting. I like to see nature reclaiming the works of man. Unfortunately with the state of the world today and the direction it’s going in I find it much easier to believe in a post apocalyptic future than a bright and shiny Eden. Great job!
Holly Bat Droppings, Joker, I haven't heard a scary creaky door opening scene 2:24 since Leatherface appeared from behind the creaky door in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Lands Of Steel atmosphere building was superb, excellent reel, cheers BC-Movies.
Indeed. It's something that Hollywood could learn from. 🙄 I hate pointless sex scenes personally. They add nothing to the stories. Dgmw I enjoy a boob scene like any other normal guy but why have people screwing when it isn't needed? Just show us a scene with them in bed smoking a cigarette and we can fill in the blanks. Or breakfast in pajamas. We know what grown people do fcol.

This is amazing. The attention to detail. The body plan is probably the most realistic i've seen. The whirring of the servos. The wordless, faceless expression. The swayind really sells just how alive it is.

Stunning work by the whole team. I was immersed and enthralled throughout the entire short. There are so many questions i have, but i know they don't really matter in a short. My two main questions (just thinking out loud and don't need them abswered): who made the robots and how did the humans end up that way in such a short(?) amount of time? The picture of the child and the grotesque form it grew into being makes me think that only a decade or so has passed. Maybe even less, considering the condition of the bear. If it has actually been a century or longer, how did the hunanoids survive that long? It's like they found immortality in their new forms. The hatred towards the robots makes me think they might be extraterrestrials? Almost as if they were the cause of the downfall of humanity and the humans haven't forgotten. The robots seem to have some semblance of emotions, or maybe just the one we followed. It seemed to be questioning their way of things; that perhaps they are the cruel ones. Excellent work. The visuals, while janky at times, were amazing. I especially love the attention to detail on the humanoids. They were still fleshy with only a miniscule amount of resemblance to the humans they once were.

Remarkable animation and story. You are a true artist breaking free from Hollywood's mold. I don't know how you created this masterpiece but it shows in your imagination.
I really enjoyed this short film. It's quite sad for everyone involved. On one hand, those humans who are infected are no longer recognized as Homo sapiens by the machines created by humans. If those AI are truly AGI, I hope they realize that even though those individuals are no longer human, they still have strong communal patterns and should be relocated to a place where they can evolve in a different way. That is as long as those beings are not incredibly destructive.
This is so well done! Even though there isn't any dialogue, it's quite compelling, and so very dark and disturbing. The modeling and animation is fantastic, especially with the lone robot exploring what remains of the old society. I have to wonder what happened to us humans to us these zombie type beings. It's unfortunate that we humans didn't make it in this dystopic future, but at least robots exist and are rebuilding whatever that city is.
Such a great concept, great story, great environment, great colour grading, great presentation. Respect to everyone who involved in the process of making this masterpiece. Keep it up!

The background, the artwork, the use of bright color and shadows; the director of photography is very talented!! You did a spectacular job of bringing out emotions in both the viewer and the main character. Many congratulations on so much hard work!
Am I the only person who is pretty sure that the robot MC has some kind of origin as a pre-apocalypse human? Their body is definitely following its own logic in terms of maintaining balance and whatnot, but the use of tools, even integrated ones, along with the special attention paid to the remnants of the family home, says "human in a steel suit" to me. Maybe it's a brain in there, maybe just software pretending to be a brain, "Rust" the robot is some kind of human. In another thread, someone asks if robots can get PTSD. I guess it depends on the robot. This one can.

I never understood why most short films tend to feel like they're a shred of an actual story. Even though there were: Exposition, Inciting Incident, Rising Action or Progressive Complications, Dilemma, Climax and Denouement... There is no background there is no connection to the characters or the setting, no answers, and certainly no twist. It's basically a draft story. And apart from that, I get that 3D modeling, texturing, lightning and animating is a real challenge but this looks like a workprint at best. I mean, it is not unwatchable but it's a level that the CGI animations were at, some thirty years ago, at least visuals-wise. And I'm not even exaggerating here. On the upside, the sound design is quite good and believable, also the mo-cap seems high end. But why pair it with graphics that look like a 2000s indie game?

That was really skillfully done with projecting anthropomorphism of the robot as we followed its reactions and face. Bit of a shocker horror too.

The work is of exceptional quality.
I never understood why most short films tend to feel like they're a shred of an actual story. Even though there were:
Exposition,
Inciting Incident,
Rising Action or Progressive Complications,
Dilemma,
Climax
and Denouement... There is no background there is no connection to the characters or the setting, no answers, and certainly no twist. It's basically a draft story.
And apart from that, I get that 3D modeling, texturing, lightning and animating is a real challenge but this looks like a workprint at best. I mean, it is not unwatchable but it's a level that the CGI animations were at, some thirty years ago, at least visuals-wise. And I'm not even exaggerating here.
On the upside, the sound design is quite good and believable, also the mo-cap seems high end. But why pair it with graphics that look like a 2000s indie game?
This already happened on earth millions of years ago.
