You really feel for both Ted and Joanna in this scene. She felt isolated by Ted during their marriage, and felt unfulfilled. She clearly loves Billy, and is regretful about leaving him. However, Ted proved to be an amazing father after she left, so you can also see his perspective.

Most people see his perspective more than hers, as she was the emotional kook who abandoned their child and their marriage to go "find herself". While we should have some sympathy for her character, no one should be allowed to create such damaging upheaval to the family, and then say "my bad, and I want what I want now, and you must give it to me".

Interesting fact: when Dustin throws the wine glass at the wall, that was improvised. He wasn't supposed to do that, but Dustin still did it for his character. Meryl had no idea he was going to do that. After the director yelled, CUT, she proceeded to confront him about that telling her how much that scared her

Funny fact about this part: When Ted (Dustin Hoffman) smacks the glass off the table it really scared Joanna (Meryl Streep) because he wasn’t supposed to do that. That wasn’t acting it was real after they had called cut Meryl Streep yelled at Dustin Hoffman for scaring her.

It's still acting just because he didn't tell her doesn't make it not acting

Yes you can see how he moved the glass away and then must have got the idea to hit the glass so moved it back into position. Shows you how quickly he was thinking.

She was heroic for leaving knowing that she was mentally ill and needed help. Once she got well, she was ready to be his mother again.

She didn’t leave to be heroic. She was having a breakdown.

@@user-de4em2vr9n can you even read? I said she was heroic for making a choice like that knowing in the long run it would protect the child from her mental illness.

Bullshit on her!!! I'm married 33 years, I'm sorry if she wasn't having enough fun in her marriage. She was the bully 1000%, I am so glad Ted put her in her place. He finally was getting smart and onto her Narc. ways.

That too much reminded him his own life!

She said “ I want my son “ and he said “ you can’t have him “. Immediately she accused him of bullying her. It really didn’t seem like bullying to me. That seemed like a natural reaction to someone coming back into your life to take your loved one that they deserted. I think she was being unfair and unrealistic.
