It was such an honest, raw and emotional depiction of a couple falling apart. With a child caught in the crossfire. You can't get any better than what Meryl and Dustin brought to those roles. And the story is timeless. It is a story that resonates as much today as it did back then. The writing was exceptional. One of my favorite films.

"She can do anything." You got that right, that's the literal truth about Meryl Streep.

Dustin really messed with Meryl - telling the director she was good for the role because her boyfriend just died, doing things like smashing the glass and later slapping her. No wonder they never acted together in a film again. It seems like he did it for "the movie" but it's scary what ambition can do. It seems like - or I hope - he's mellowed out over the years. But he should probably acknowledge now what a dick he was to her.

I could never understand why Robert de Niro and Al Pacino didn't beat the crap out of Dustin Hoffman if he really did slap her and said all those horrible things about John Cazale who they both knew and care deeply about.

They both played in Series of Unfortunate Events after this in 2004.

He would have been arrested today. That's assault. A whole crew director staff all saw him slap her hard. She still hates him lol.

I also agree denero & Pacino should have kicked the crap out of him slapping her ( should have been arrested ) also smashing the glass. Which could have hurt her.

@AdArmand But that's not the movie. She isn't in it cause her character leaves ...that's the story. They had to establish that component being missed by having her off screen for mid way through the movie and it allows the viewer to establish feelings for Hoffman and the son as a unit. I love it. Creates that confusion of emotion. Fantastic movie all around.

For all of Dustin's eccentricities, he got one thing right: The Eleanor Roosevelt of Acting. Matchless.

Acting is an art, a craft, in which the gamut of human emotion, psychology and action is your palette. The best of them become their characters and reach for the broadest, finest combination of "colors" they can. By melding their real life situations with what is required of the character, obliterating the lines between themselves and the character played, they achieve the finest performances that we enjoy so immensely. THey trigger - resonate - in us those very emotions. Hats off to the BEST!

6:00 Interesting how Meryl and everyone else praises Dustin's "invention" of breaking the glass, however in the mitoo era of false accusation Meryl reverses that and said it was too aggressive

He's a method actor. And method actors are sometimes known to be hard to work with on set. The glass smashing scene was improvised by Hoffman. It wasn't thrown at her so she wasn't in any "danger". He really dives into his character and at that moment, he wanted to fight for his son and couldn't believe what she was saying about wanting him back.

@Rebaneller1955 he was pissed at his wife -as he was actually going through a divorce (in real life). So his anger was towards Joan (not Meryl). it was misinterpreted by many people -even by himself !!

although hoffmann thought she was a perfect choice at a perfect time (grieving for cazale at that time) clear on the screen in the way she conducted herself, i still believe it was a mistake; she never really admitted what the experience did to her ! his being angry with her: i had a feeling she held back not just because she had been deeply hurt after cazale's death; hoffmann was not in control, and he knew it but never admitted it publicly... it takes more than wits to understand a woman...

I think they are a bit overly sympathetic to the character Joanna...the simple fact is she deserted her husband and son for selfish ends. She's definitely the villain in this story. Meryl did a fantastic job capturing the role though...hats off!!!!

@S Brown...I didn't feel that at all. She KNEW she was in trouble emotionally. She wanted to spare her son from watching her go through an emotional breakdown. What she did was FOR her son because she loved him that much. I never once thought she didn't love her son or want to be a mother to him. What she said on the witness stand cemented that beautifully. Parenting a child is hard enough when you're not drowning in emotional illness. To do what she did WAS out of the immense love she had for him. I think this is something a man could never begin to understand.
