      The fact some comments are saying they are disgusted by this film. It's literally every 20 something year old guys fantasy to sleep with a 40 something year old woman that looks like her lol. She never rapes him, he's not a kid, she doesn't even shame him for being nervous instead of masculine. What they find disgusting about this movie I do not know, obviously apart from when she lies to the daughter about him raping her rather than telling her the truth that she seduced him near the end of the film. That was fucked up.

      @@patrickbatman141 Mrs. Robinson didn't want Benjamin for her daughter because she did not want a man that was so wimpy as to be easily seduced by her, and if he married her daughter, the affair would sure wreck the marriage. Mrs. Robinson is a predator.

    Probably the greatest ending in the history of cinema. When Elaine looks up and screams, "Ben!" you can feel it in your heart. The casting for this film was brilliant.

      @@aaronaragon7838I think it indicates how Elaine has very few positive relationships in her life, so when she forms one with Benjamin, she can’t help but hold onto it, in spite of what he did. We know she has a bad relationship with her parents - look at how her dad tells Benjamin to go sow some wild oats and then pressures her to go out with him, and then her dad forces her to give up her education and marry someone she doesn’t love. And the slap at the end shows us all we need to know about her relationship with her mom. She’s desperate to get away from them and live her own life, free from their control. Benjamin offers her that freedom, so she chooses him. Plus Carl her fiancé is known as the Make-Out King, so he’s already guaranteed to cheat on her and make her as miserable as her mom. Also, though he’s flawed, Benjamin is the only person in the film who respects her feelings; when she asks him to leave Berkeley, he almost does, and only stays because she changes her mind and asks him to, and then she makes the first move in reconciling with him. Does she deserve even better than the bare minimum that Benjamin offers? Totally. But within the context of the movie, Benjamin is her best option.

      @@theeclectic2919they probably knew each other in their youth since their dads were business partners. I think the idea that Elaine has had a crush on Ben for a while explains a lot of her actions in the film. She’s clinging onto the idea of him that she has, holding on tight even in spite of the affair with her mother.

    The ending of this film is so powerful and one of the best moments in the history of cinema. The simple, nonchalant way she gets the waiter’s attention after Ben fumbled and failed to flag him down is a perfect snapshot of their contrasts. He’s skittish and vulnerable as a yearling antelope’s first time at the watering hole. The proposal scene is very underrated. The beautiful lighting, the way they’re hiding in the shadows as they must hide their love from their families, the way he kisses her so gently, the way she buries her face into his shoulder, the way they whisper, the way he presses his lips to her hair … it’s just so romantic. Yes it’s pretty weird that he was involved with her mom and their relationship may not last because of it, but it’s important to remember that Mrs Robinson was a horrible mother to Elaine; her ferocious slaps at the end prove her to be abusive. She resents Elaine just because the pregnancy forced her to marry Mr Robinson, as if Elaine could possibly help or be responsible for the circumstances of her own conception?? Mrs Robinson also takes advantage of Ben’s loneliness and manipulates him into believing she is his only escape from his parents. Elaine shows him there is more to life than that, and Ben shows her she should not allow her parents to control her anymore. I think there’s enough there to make them a sympathetic couple.

    The camerawork in this film is satisfying and remarkable, in that, it reveals the psyche of the characters in the scene, especially Benjamin.
    Some examples: That leg shot where Ben delivers the famous seduction line symbolizes that he’s trapped.
    The moment Elaine finds out about ben’s affair with her mother, the camerawork is blurry. But once it racks focus on her, she immediately reacts to the news.
    At Ben’s graduation party, the camera is shaky and close to his face, showing that he feels nervous when awkwardly interacting with his parents’ friends.

    Whenever I feel down or bored, I put on "The Graduate," then suddenly I find myself smiling. Bancroft was so good in the role that I think it was difficult for her to improve upon, and why not?? It was pure genius, a combination of raw sexuality, frustrated emotions, equaling utter hilarity. The final selection of a totally unknown Dustin Hoffman was equally genius, especially when they wrote the role exclusively for Robert Redford. On the Charlie Rose Show, she said that she always knew when it was running on TV because total strangers, mainly men, would give her "that look" in the street, with a wink and a grin.

    After Elaine screams and brings the landlord played by Normal Fell and all the other male students to Ben's door wondering who screamed you can see Richard Dreyfuss as one of the male students he says "Should I call the cops? I'll go call the cops" when this movie was made Dreyfuss was just starting out he had done episodes of Bewitched and Gidget and that's all he really had.

    The premise of the book (and the film) was an expose of sleazy corruption beneath a veneer of perfect Californian blond and beautiful sunshiney smiles. For this reason Doris Day was offered the role of Mrs Robinson to shock the audience when, someone perceived as so pure, could have carnal intentions for a 20 year old boy just out of college. Doris turned it down (nudity and content appalled her) and the rest is history with Bancroft’s iconic performance (I still think a DD version though could have been fascinating to watch)

    • @peterweisz6973
      @peterweisz6973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doris Day never read the script that Mike Nichols sent to her (according to a current bio book). It was intercepted by her husband, Barry Comden, who rejected it as too sleazy for Day's goody-two-shoes image and sent it back.

    • @gerardmackay8909
      @gerardmackay8909 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peterweisz6973 yes that’s very plausible as she had a habit of yielding control to husbands but I did read a quote from Day that she was repelled by the exploitative nature of the character. The ‘truth’ as opposed to the ‘spin’ can be very elusive. I still think Doris would have made a fabulous Mrs Robinson (much as I loved Bancroft’s sleazy ‘snakelike’ interpretation)

      Based on the book Robert Redford was offered the part of Ben and he turned it down then Charles Grodin was offered the part but he wanted more money he said it was the dumbest mistake he ever made he would have been great and that's how Hoffman got the role that made him a star.
