Great independent horror film with a limited budget but everything and everyone was utilized in the best ways possible. Maika Monroe is the main character and her movies tend to be well done. She has a great sense of the roles that she takes on. I recommend The Guest, Hot Summer Nights, Honey, Villains and The Education of Frederick Fitzell/Flashback. Great reaction!!

The fear, discomfort and especially the impotence of salvation that this film transmits makes it one of the best horror films of recent times. In addition to this masterful direction that gives us the impression in the details and also in the distance shots that they are always being followed, or supposedly followed, or that anyone could be the devil. The cursed sex transmitting curse in perpetual contamination and still, it has one of the best movie intros with that long shot. Oh, and let me hope that, if the guy had sex for love (and what love, right? Giving his life), those lost souls would leave.

I think restricting information is part of the point. Lots of films restrict visual information through tight frames or shadows. This film gives you wide open frames to look around, but it doesn't give you narrative information. Knowing about the It that Follows would be a kind of a comfort. Instead, we learn almost everything up front, and so there's no clear course of action to stop it.

I remember my brother dragged me to see this in theater and although I enjoyed it overall, the ending made me laugh at the premise because it turned the enjoyable film into a laughable feature film length promotional ad for abstinence. It's about survivors of sexual assault and the damage and paranoia and loneliness of life afterwards. She did nothing wrong, but her whole life is upended anyway and she will likely never feel truly comfortable or safe again; she has to constantly be on guard against strangers, acquaintances, even loved ones everywhere she goes, and even though some people might not blame her for getting into this situation (though some will), the only people who can truly understand what she's feeling are people also afflicted with It.

22:02 Ultimately though I think the message is less "screw someone else over by giving it to them" and more "if everyone would stop passing it on, it would finally end." You can sleep with someone else for short-term personal gain (sex for temporary pleasure as far as STDs go) or be selfless to benefit everyone (forgo sex to keep from spreading your disease).

I definitely agree. It's interesting to think about who is more wrong: Hugh doing what he did to Jay, or Paul seemingly passing on the demon to unsuspecting victims through the prostitutes? The natural assumption is the prostitutes will pass the demon on to their "Johns", who likely have wives given the average types who solicit prostitutes. Logically speaking, this increases Paul and Jay's longevity of survival. However, unsuspecting victims will fall prey much, much quicker due to their confusion and ignorance of what "It" is. Of course, it's left ambiguous whether or not Paul actually slept with the prostitutes, or if the person following Jay and Paul was actually the demon.

@@lilscenechick1995 It's possible he slept with at least one but IT killed them before they passed it on & then caught up to them. It's also possible since they are walking & holding hands like they are more calm & acting pretty normal so some time may have passed for IT to kill everyone & then catch up.

My interpretation of the ending is that it was just a regular person walking in the background
I think it only follows you when you're the active target but that final shot is to kinda simbolyze that they can never be sure. Don't know about you, but I would forever live looking over my shoulder. Just because you passed it, the terror isn't over.
Paul actually played it nicely, he passed it on to a prostitute. Other than maybe a flight attendant or a commercial pilot, I think this is the best thing that you can do to ensure it will take the longest to come back to you, if it does. So because of that I think it was just a regular person there to plant that doubt on the viewer.

Agreed. It's simple, but effective, a being like this after you would take one's paranoia to new heights. What rules does it abide by, besides constantly walking towards you, cannot die and being aware of when you're trying to trick it? How much money do you have, how many people can you sacrifice, how would you fare among crowds of people, what about maintaining a job? One would spend the rest of his/her days living in fear and worry.

This movie made me think of an episode of the 1974 TV show Kolchak: The NightStalker, called Horror in the Heights. Something was killing people in a neighborhood and it turned out to be a creature from Hindu mythology called a Rakshasa. It would assume the form of someone the victim trusted, then slowly walk toward them while making excuses for why they were there, and when it got close enough, it would grab and kill the person. I know it's not exactly the same, but that's what this film reminded me of.

I'm sure someone else has said but the whole feel of the movie is intended to add confusion- what season are they in? Some days it's like summer but the next it's fall. What devices are they using as well as what's on TV? Things are modern or old, in subtle ways, to make you feel just a tiny bit confused or unsettled. Where are all the parents? They're there physically but not really there, for any kid, etc etc. Everything is intentional with this movie and yet nothing is thrown in your face, it's just an all round feeling of unease or unfamiliarity you just can't quite put your finger on.

my favorite aspect of this film is it's an "invisible monster"/paranormal type film where the creature just does not give a fuck. it doesn't care if other people know it's there, it doesn't care if the person it's after is in public or private. it's not pulling that bullshit mind games where it makes the friends/etc of the victim think they are crazy. it doesn't care, and just wants to kill.
also, it doesn't really teleport around as much. it has to actually break into a home.
I do agree that i hate the ending. it's the typical, cliche indie horror type ending, but the rest of the film was solid.
