Results from Sharp Shooter wipe out

  • This is the result of using SharpShoot-R to clean badly fouled barrel. The barrel has about 2800 rounds through it. I did clean it on regular bases but obviously did not do a good job of it. This used to shoot 1/2" groups at 200 yards, but lately I have been having trouble with the grouping.
I am hoping by getting the barrel cleaned I can get the grouping back. In another video I will update on how the grouping has tuned out.
I am really happy with how Sharp Shooter patch out has cleaned the barrel.
Please watch the other video that show before picture.
Please like the video and I welcome comments that I can learn from.

Is this really your father's product? I just starting using Wipe out bore cleaner a couple months ago and its my single most favorite cleaning product I own. It improved my grouping at 200 yards with my Ruger M77 30-06 from 5/6 inches to 3/3.25. That's how bad the fouling was in my barrel even though I scrubbed the crap out of it.

Tks a lot. At least a real test with before and after look in the barrel. I received my borescope today and realised tha a clean patch does not mean a clean barrel. My old Ruger is so full of copper, looking forward to test this product and see the result. Hours of cleaning today did almost nothing with some copper solvent. Sorry for bad english, french speaking guy here. :)

Get some Rem clean or JB bore brite(red) and using a tight punch type of jag, scrub the area where the fire cracking is. The tops of the cracks will smooth out, and this will prolong accuracy in the barrel. Great video and excellent presentation.

I use Wipe-Out after a shooting session. I leave it over night. And repeat for another night. This gets almost all the copper and crap. I finish with a light abrasive cleaner , like Rem Clean or Iosso, and then wipe clean with some oil.
You have a lot of cracking in the throat. That is indicative of a well-used stainless steel barrel. When I have that much wear I cut an in or two off the chamber end and re-chamber the barrel. That makes it almost new again.

I find JB Bore paste or Iosso paste works better for carbon. However, Wipe out , Patch out works great for Copper fouling!

Dave the Gunsmith here. You didn’t state the caliber here. Brother! All that cracking and erosion is from a serious amount of HEAT!! So, either you a shooting too many rounds in a row, getting the barrel hot to the point of melting. Or the rifle has thousands of rounds down range. Is it still holding tight groups. How far into the bore is all that cracking. You are about ready for a new barrel or new rifle. All that cracking and erosion is also causing a lot of your copper build up. That mess is literally stripping the copper off the bullet as it goes by. Good luck.

That alligator skin in the throat area means the barrel is about worn out.

    George:
Firstly, I want you to shoot the rifle BEFORE you put anything else in the barrel. I think you will be pleased with the result..
I want to explain to you what you are looking at in the rifle barrel. The cracking you see in the throat area is commonly known as “throat erosion” . THROAT EROSION happens when flame temperatures and pressure get quite high. It is here in the throat that your barrel “wears out”, not at the muzzle.
Those cracks and fissures are caused (1)in part by shooting the gun rapidly without letting the barrel properly cool. Also (2)the flame temperatures are much higher on some brands of powder. Together these two elements are responsible for decreased barrel performance along with a large number of rounds thru the barrel. Improper cleaning the barrel allows fouling to build up in layers further contribution to decreased accuracy.
The barrel should be thoroughly cleaned after every shooting session. If it were my rifle I would think it a good idea to clean, at least every 40 rounds or so. This should do a great deal in promotion barrel longevity.
Additionally what you are seeing in the barrel are “tool marks” that occur in the barrel making process. Some barrels can be very rough and copper foul considerably…..that does not mean they are inaccurate. It simply means they will need to be cleaned more often.
If the accuracy is gone from this barrel, the solution would be (A) buy a new barrel or (B) cut 1 1/2 inches off this barrel and rechamber it.
It is common for BENCH REST RIFLES to completely wear out a barrel in around 2000 rounds. I would also like to know what caliber the rifle is and what ammunition you are using. We may be able to help a bit there as well.
PATCH-OUT will dissolve COPPER, CARBON, and POWDER FOULING without brushing.

You just gave the straight story.I have absolutely no issues with anything you said...I use Sharp Shooter Patchout Accelerator and Lead out on my revolvers. They all work great. Am restoring an original Winchester 1906 that looks good cosmetically and am using Patchout to get rid of the Century's worth of Carbon fouling. It is still coming out brown but improving fast now . I love your stuff. Best I have tried without question.

Fire cracking is normal after a few thousand rounds down the tube.
Patch out is OK, but if you cant wait hours on end for it to work, IOSSO paste on a tight patch is the way to go.

Barrel looks super clean but awful degraded. It sounds like it’ll shoot well, but you’ll get to the point where it just fouls too early and too badly to shoot well *consistently*. Barrels are consumable items. A barrel that’s exceptionally hard to get and keep clean is one that should be replaced.

Most of that black cracking in carbon. Everything that you have done has not taken out the most important part of the cleaning, the carbon. Use a brush and a carbon remover and scrub the start of the rifling and let soak. Keep going until you break up that hard carbon. You was calling it fire cracking I belive. If you can't get it out, try jb bore paste or simular.

Wrong! It is called fire cracking for a reason..the steel is cracking due to repeated firings. No amount of cleaning will help this condition! This barrel is exceptionally clean. If it is a competition barrel it is at the end of its life.

I just simply don’t remove copper. Maybe every 250 rounds or so I’ll pull some patches with Hoppes 9 though to get out carbon crud or whatever, but the idea that people need to try so hard to remove every trace of copper is unnecessary in my opinion.

Whatever you do. no NOT use Patch-Out No Lead.. That crap has ruined the bluing on TWO of my nice Revolvers; A Colt Officers Match and a Ruger Super Blackhawk. I followed instructions exactly and limited the NO Lead contact to the bluing. This schitt eats the blue off your guns IMMEDIATELY with just seconds of contact.

That cracking looks terrible....but thats what happens in our game. It doesn't matter who made your barrel or how much you spend. IT'S GOING TO HAPPEND. I've watched 'Speedy' Gonzalas (who happens to be a hall of fame bench rest shooter and inventor of the full length neck bushing die) use Lock-Ez to fill in the cracking. You can get it at every hardware store or autoparts store.

No you wont get your accuracy back for long. Your barrel is fire cracked to hell. You gota shoot less round strings and or alot slower. Its not like shooting a 9mm. Were talking alot if powder being burnt in a split sec. That heats things up fast. Heat is what caused that. Because your barrel overall looks good down the bore. But that fire crack section is robbing your accuracy
