  • The Deep South holds some real mineralogical treasures that certainly aren't buried too deep. Chase and I travel to Johnson Creek Farm in March of 2019 for an Amethyst, Epidote, and Beryl dig along with Bryan Major (The Crystal Collector) and "famous" Amos Cunningham.
Owner Jason Ashley invites the public for a fee dig about 4 times a year, and rockhounds from all over the country descend on this spacious farm near Due West, South Carolina.
Several seams of quartz and amethyst run through the property, as well as a seam of epidote, and about a half-mile of beryl, quartz, feldspar, and mica.

I met one of the guys and his daughter at my yard sale yesterday. He showed me this video and they brought me some of the crystals! I’m so happy :). Due West, SC is on the map!

Thanks for stopping by! There are so many opportunities in the Deep South for mineralization and collecting. In South Carolina and Georgia you have quite a few pay dig sites. Hope to see you at one of those in the near future!

In the video, the owner says they have public digs about four times a year. How/where can we find out when?

How did you find out about the special dig day? I'd love to go dig something like that on special days.

You will have to call them or check their Facebook page. I have not heard of a public dig for a few months now.

The famous one syllable by Bryan Major that sounds more like 4 syllables. :)
