You said you're not quite good at colored pencils and want to start using them more. I definitely recommend blending with solvent if you want to get a really saturated look (since you mainly do markers which are very saturated). You can also do mixed media with markers and colored pencils which would look really amazing; just make sure the pencils go on top of the markers and not the other way around
Thank you, Andrew for the ture of your studio! I like your light table a lot! Yes, try the colored pencils - you would be surprise what a joy and a freedom it gives you! Good luck!
Absolutely love your setup. It's exactly what I'm striving to accomplish as well. The marker trays atop of your drafting table was ingenious. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Thank you! As you may have seen in other comments, I've changed A LOT of my studio. Just been hard coming up with enough time to do a second tour. But it's coming!
You're welcome! Looking forward to your second studio tour. I had to chuckle when I saw your vid because we have similar taste in music, movie soundtracks, and I still listen to vinyl as well. It's great when a guy's version of a "man-cave" includes an art studio!
I just ran aross this video...Super Interesting!!! I love to see how other people set up their work spaces. I've been trying to start the "second chapter" of my life as an artist. Like you I'm leaning, experimenting and having fun, with some frustration sprinkled in.
So is the little ink tray. So manny times I have accidentally tipped over my ink. Actually funny story I was taking art classes over the summer 2 and in my first class we were using speed ball ink(because they come in a set) and I hade to run to my next class and I though my ink was fully closed so I shoved it into my hoody pocket but it wasn’t closed
Love the way you brainstorm storage / space-saving ideas. I'm that way as well with my craft room. One suggestion, if I may: Since the bookshelf to your right has empty shelves, I would replace it with a shallow set of drawers (and add dividers) to hold the items you referred to (color & white pencils, tubes, etc.) A couple of shelves can be mounted on the wall above it to hold the books currently on the bookshelf. Also, to make your sample swatches last a little longer, you could put them on 8 1/2" x 11'' paper inside page protectors in a binder. That would allow you to categorize the colors more as well. You would then just pull the binder from the bookshelf and easily flip it open to the tab/category you need (reds, skin tones, graphite pencils, sample splatters on grey paper, etc. Thanks for posting this. Good luck!
Very cool! Great video... I like how you set up your table. I put a lot of time and effort into my studio as well. People think I put almost too much time and thought into it. What they don't see is how much work I get done here all the while enjoying the heck out of my time here. Some people dread going to their work spaces...and because of that their happiness and productivity suffer.. Thanks for posting this video...lots of good ideas here for anyone's studio space.
Thank you! And yes, I agree. If you're going to be spending massive amounts of time in a relatively small space, you have to be comfortable. My office/studio is my sanctuary, and I have to enjoy being there. That said, we're planning on pulling out all the furniture and replacing it all with one massive trip to IKEA. Lots planned, and will likely do a followup tour!
Thanks for this video. I feel I am getting to that point where, "Not a good artist but I want to respect the hobby enough to provide myself with the tools needed to do a decent job."
Hi Andrew, love your studio ! I’ve been through quite a bit of cheaper desks and found most too wobbly to mount recording devices into… would recommend this desk as a stable enough? Or if it’s just preferred for drawing only! Ty!
I would use a blob of plasticine for holding my ink bottle. It is more substantial than the cardboard you're using and would actually adhere to the desk top. I made a light table out of an old french easel (made a video about that) and used a plastic diffuser. If you mounted the diffuser on the underside of your glass table where the light bulb sits, you wouldn't have to frost your glass. Just some ideas...
If what you want is a colored pencil white, a lot of artists swear by the Caran d'Ache white coloured pencil. I've tried it myself, and it gives excellent coverage, much better than Prismacolor white. Expensive, though, but it is available in open stock at some dealers, incuding Blick, I think. The general white charcoal is also good, but charcoal isn't colored pencil, and if you want white to use in a colored pencil piece, you are probably better off with colored pencil. The Prismacolor black are good, but you might also look at the Wolfs' carbon black pencils, I think they have 3 grades of black. Let us know what you find is best.
Okay, because of this video I just bought the table and am going to do the same thing with the markers because that is flippin' brilliant! Can you show how you attached those marker bins so they don't slide down under?
Thanks, that's great! All I did was drill two holes in each container, then ran plastic zip ties through them, and around the top bar of the desk surface. You may have to loosen the glass top a bit but they should slip right under it, then you can re-tighten the glass.
So I generally use copics and not prisma colors but I noticed in your list of skin tones you use Brick Beige and maybe it's because I use copic and not primsa colors, but the copic brick beige is much more of a blonde. I'd be interested to see the primsa color brick beige as a skin tone sometime. :)
David Breaux Jr. Trust me, I've considered it :) We have a 3D printer at work and a couple guys really good with it. The real trick is finding a way to make it adjust to any angle of the drafting table. Still thinking...
Great video, mate. Can I ask, what's the thingy on the top of the table that holds the pens/markers? Is it some sort of pen holder/tray I can buy somewhere? Thanks!
Hi again Andrew, Just curious; did you buy/use the leg extensions for the table? After looking at 4-5 similar tables I'm probably going to end up getting the same one you did, but with an extra little shelf on one side. Specs inform that the table is only 31.5" high, which seems kind of short...but that's in the flat position and like yourself I would use the surface at an angle...says 35 degrees max...yours looks like it has a good slant on it, just about what I'd use as well :) Does it works well as a light table? I'm thinking of getting a piece of frosted plexiglass to place on top to diffuse the light...Amazon sells single pieces in different dimensions and I'm thinking it could rest on the retractable pencil holder...any thoughts as to how well that might work? Thanks again for your input :)
Hi Andrew, Thanks for posting the tour; not only did I enjoy it but it gave me some good ideas as well :) I am in the market for a new drawing table and have been considering a glass topped table for the same reasons you illustrate here...can you tell me the brand/model of your table? There are a lot of them out there! Also, I notice you have trays for supplies on both sides of your table; does this interfere with using a T Square at all? Thanks - Ed
Hey thanks! The desk is the "Studio Designs Futura Craft Station": bit.ly/cXObeb. As for a T-square, I'm not sure. I imagine as long as they're on straight, they shouldn't pose an issue.
Thanks for the quick response Andrew! I thought as much; S.D. manufactures more than a few different models of glass topped drawing/drafting tables (as do other manufacturers) and I've been looking at them all trying to decide which one will best suit me...any trouble assembling it?
You talk about white. And have a whole vid on it. Copic stocks this little ink pot of white ink with the finest hair brush affixed to the underside of the cap, it's specifically made for doing highlights in the eyes and on hair strands and stuff. It's incredibly opaque and fluid and beautiful. I picked one up at comicon a couple years ago.
Are you and your wife living in Atlanta? I ask because I am new to the area and would love to have some art friends. Thanks for doing this tour, very well done room and lots of good tips.
Nice setup, I already have very similar tilt table saved on Amazon, What I do need is a decent CHAIR for it, something like what you are sittiing on, any info on that? thanks
Thanks! Actually the chair is by the same company, made to match the desk. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/2FZND1L. Honestly, anything comfortable would work, and to be honest, this isn't the comfiest for long periods of time :)
This particular one is just an old Dockers hat that used to belong to my grandfather. I got it after he passed away and it brings me luck :) These days, I buy new hats from Goorin Brothers (www.goorin.com/)
That table is a great idea with the markers at the top.I know what I'll be making for my colour pencils etc. The glove at 15 bucks is not a bad idea__I use my fingerless gloves , ie I cut the fingers off the gloves I get at the local Chinese $2 shop ! As for storage, go up the wall. In my studio I have everything on wheels ; watercolours stay with watercolours, oils with oils, acrylics with same ; one job ,one workstation. There is less clutter. I couldn't stand those beige walls though... proper lighting 4800 K to 5500K for'' daylight '' all over the studio would be nice against a neutral value 7 grey wall and no colour bias. I even like to hang things off the ceiling to clear the floor space_efficiency first, looks 2nd.In some public service offices even cops are at their computers standing ! it seems to be better than sitting, efficiency wise. This would save more floor space and you won't get a hunch back .Those mechanical arms are great. If you decide to get an airbrush have a look at the Aztecs line. Nice video and more power to you when you slowly morph into a new career. Cheers.
I have the same desk is there any way you can show or let me know exactly how you did the marker holder I have the same problem with storage my studio is in my loft
So I realized I still haven't addressed this. I still plan to do a "mini" video for it, but the short version, is the back of my drafting table is lined with these plastic marker cubes: amzn.to/1LFo5nB. Each one holds 25 markers. I drilled holes into them and attached them to the metal bar on the back of the desk with plastic cable ("zip") ties. My Blick's store had them for a couple bucks cheaper than Amazon, but I can't find them on the Blick's site anymore. Cheers!
Thanks for that info. I clicked the link and Amazon noted that that model is not available so Iooked at a few similar. I knew it would be a lot more $$ than a typical home office printer, but didn't realize the difference would that great. I think a trip to Best Buy/Staples, etc. is needed.
Here's the one I've been using: files.atlantajones.com/Prismacolor%20Marker%20Chart.pdf Can't say for sure if it's still up-to-date with their current colors, though. I'll have to look around and see if there's a newer one.
YAHUSHA KING it’s the “Studio Designs 10050 Futura Craft Station”. See the first link in the description for all the product links. Thanks for watching!
These days digital artists are in. I don't see why keep so much hands on art manually when you can do most things with a program. And with just as much signature technique. All I need manually is a sketchpad and pencil. The sketch ain't nothing. It's about the final piece . Only problem is the internal hackers. But manual drawing is more traditional.
And don't doubt yourself bro, I used to say the same thing about not being able to be a professional artist until I saw people who weren't very good making a living with art... I made the decision to do art full time and am living in Maui doing art...you definitely have the skills and the tools, just pull the trigger and believe in yourself
OmarsDad Thanks for the encouragement! I think part of it is that I've been a web developer for almost 18 years now and I've settled into a good salary with benefits. Do I think we could "survive" on my art? Maybe, but I wonder what we'd have to sacrifice for daddy to do what he wants.
LOVE the at marker chart idea! I'm gonna do one for myself. THANK YOU!!!
Welcome! It's really helpful. I need to redo mine because a) I've added a set of Copic markers, and b) my sheet has faded too much over a few years.
Love the idea for the light on under the desk ( I have that same desk ) and the i Pad holder is sweet.
I actually really love this setup. I was really against getting a glass drafting table, but the light box trick is making me change my mind.
Glad you like it! I had the same reservations about the glass top, but it's come in super handy.
Andrew Jones mind if I ask where you bought yours?
@@aylinitzel. I bought mine at a Blicks art store, but Amazon has them at a decent price, too. www.amazon.com/dp/B001KWEYP4?tag=atlantajones-20
Thank you, Andrew for the ture of your studio! I like your light table a lot! Yes, try the colored pencils - you would be surprise what a joy and a freedom it gives you! Good luck!
Hey thanks!
Lovely studio tour! I just made one myself, and yes, it IS a bit nerve-wracking to talk on camera. Kudos for making it look easy. ;)

Love this video Andrew! Thank you for sharing your studio with us! Continued success my friend!
Woooow, your art space is so cool! Thank you so much for the detailed tour. You have so many smart solutions that make working easier, very inspiring!
I just ran aross this video...Super Interesting!!! I love to see how other people set up their work spaces. I've been trying to start the "second chapter" of my life as an artist. Like you I'm leaning, experimenting and having fun, with some frustration sprinkled in.
OMG That Eliott statue on your desk! I bet everyday is a brazzle dazzle day!
It's one of my most favorite things :)
A true overachiever you are. I love it!
Thank you for sharing this. I like your studio.
Love that desk and the setup is really impressive!
Thanks! It's taken me a while to get things set up the way I'd like :)
OMG THATS GENIUS 😱 the light box
So is the little ink tray. So manny times I have accidentally tipped over my ink.
Actually funny story I was taking art classes over the summer 2 and in my first class we were using speed ball ink(because they come in a set) and I hade to run to my next class and I though my ink was fully closed so I shoved it into my hoody pocket but it wasn’t closed
CONGRATS FRIEND ... very nice works
I totally bought a bunch of those same Disney books at Good Will for the same reason not too long ago, that's really funny! Nice studio setup.
Great video - enjoyed the fact you explain everything really well, look forward to more.
Love the way you brainstorm storage / space-saving ideas. I'm that way as well with my craft room. 1000mishi Thanks! As it turns out, I HAVE replaced almost everything in my office (except the drafting table). An updated video is coming soon :)
Andrew Jones You're really on the ball in making that space work for you. I look forward to seeing it!
Very cool! Great video... I like how you set up your table. I put a lot of time and effort into my studio as well. People think I put almost too much time and thought into it. Andrew Jones Excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with....
Thanks for sharing, nice studio and nice works you did.
Thanks for sharing. I use that same table too. It's a great table.
That’s really amazing how you have an art studio. I gonna have an art studio myself. But only when I move out on my own.
Thanks for this video. I feel I am getting to that point where, "Not a good artist but I want to respect the hobby enough to provide myself with the tools needed to do a decent job."
Awesome studio! Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy is a must. Also George Bridgeman's Life Drawing.
Great tour!
Wow, very nice! Really dig the studio man!
Thank you! I STILL need to make the new video with all the new stuff :)
Fantastic set bud I love it.
Hi Andrew, love your studio ! I’ve been through quite a bit of cheaper desks and found most too wobbly to mount recording devices into… would recommend this desk as a stable enough? Or if it’s just preferred for drawing only! Ty!
The one finger glove is usually used for not smudging a tablet lol, not smudge proofing with traditional media
love your tour! inspires me to have my room set up more for an art space!
Glad you liked it!
I like your studio.
For the Color reference sheet, have you tried laminating it? It will preserve for longer.
I would use a blob of plasticine for holding my ink bottle. It is more substantial than the cardboard you're using and would actually adhere to the desk top. AWESOME
Nice video, keep making TH-cam video's and art. People eventually if finding intressesting stuff for them come here.
I loved your tour it was really good. I actually wanted a drafting table like that but no one had a video on it.
I like your studio, it really helped me with mine.
JoshVlogs 36 Thanks! Glad it helped. Although it's all different now. Just haven't had time to do a new tour, but it's coming.
You have one of the best setups I've seen. :D
Thanks! It's taken quite a while to get where I want it, but I love it!
Agreed!
Awesome studio tour. I really want an arm for my cintiq. The stand that it comes with is quite annoying to use.
omg. so jealous of your marker shelf!!
I admire your taste in music dude! Sweet art station btw!
Thank you!
No worries. I have the same drawing table as a well, The Futura table. I got it as a gift, I absolutely love it.
Great video... thanks for sharing!
Awesome studio! Enjoyed the video. Subscribed!
Lou101960 Thank you! Updated video coming soon for my updated studio!
You should try the FW acrylic ink or Liquitex acrylic ink for your whites. It's thin enough to use in an airbrush.
Yeah, I've been meaning to try those FW inks.
If what you want is a colored pencil white, a lot of artists swear by the Caran d'Ache white coloured pencil. I've tried it myself, and it gives excellent coverage, much better than Prismacolor white. Great! Thanks, man. And I have to say you are a fantastic artist too.
like the studio very nice, little tip draw half the face on one side then copy it to the other side.
So I generally use copics and not prisma colors but I noticed in your list of skin tones you use Brick Beige and maybe it's because I use copic and not primsa colors, but the copic brick beige is much more of a blonde. I'd be interested to see the primsa color brick beige as a skin tone sometime. :)
Yeah, it's weird how that worked out. I did end up buying the skin tones Copic set, which I'm liking a lot as well.
Dude the ink bottle idea is great, you should get someone to 3D print some for you. I'd do it but I haven't gotten a 3D printer just yet
David Breaux Jr. Trust me, I've considered it :) We have a 3D printer at work and a couple guys really good with it. The real trick is finding a way to make it adjust to any angle of the drafting table. Still thinking...
you could have a simple screw wheel that you turn so it can't slide.
Andrew Jones good idea, then sell them, I'd buy two or three from you!
Luminance white colored pencil i think by caran d'Ache is great....also with white ink try a calligraphy pen instead of brush or micron pens
Great video, mate. Can I ask, what's the thingy on the top of the table that holds the pens/markers? Is it some sort of pen holder/tray I can buy somewhere? Thanks!
Hi again Andrew,
Just curious; did you buy/use the leg extensions for the table? After looking at 4-5 similar tables I'm probably going to end up getting the same one you did, but with an extra little shelf on one side. Specs inform that the table is only 31.5" high, which seems kind of short...but that's in the flat position and like yourself I would use the surface at an angle...says 35 degrees max...yours looks like it has a good slant on it, just about what I'd use as well :)
Does it works well as a light table? I'm thinking of getting a piece of frosted plexiglass to place on top to diffuse the light...Amazon sells single pieces in different dimensions and I'm thinking it could rest on the retractable pencil holder...any thoughts as to how well that might work?
Thanks again for your input :)
spectacular!
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for posting the tour; not only did I enjoy it but it gave me some good ideas as well :) I am in the market for a new drawing table and have been considering a glass topped table for the same reasons you illustrate here...can you tell me the brand/model of your table?
P.S: Thanks for including the link :)
Are the prismacolers your favorite
You talk about white. And have a whole vid on it. +Tommy Ohlrich Awesome, I had no idea! Will have to look for that.
Are you and your wife living in Atlanta? I ask because I am new to the area and would love to have some art friends. Thanks for doing this tour, very well done room and lots of good tips.
Yep, we're actually in Duluth! Feel free to shoot me a note at andrew-at-atlantajones.com.
Andrew love your style will you be doing update of your drafting studio
I'm way overdue for one! I'll be doing some rearranging soon, so hopefully I'll get something together before too long
Thank you see you soon
Nice setup, I already have very similar tilt table saved on Amazon, What I do need is a decent CHAIR for it, something like what you are sittiing on, any info on that? thanks
Thanks! Actually the chair is by the same company, made to match the desk. Here it is on Amazon: amzn.to/2FZND1L. Honestly, anything comfortable would work, and to be honest, this isn't the comfiest for long periods of time :)
Awesome vid Andrew :) I have the same table love it :)
Thanks! Yeah, I love that thing :)
Your studio is very impressive! Thanks for sharing :)
wow i want that table
Your studio is awesome :)
GREAT VID 😜😜😜😜💖
Great video -- very organized! Can you tell me the name of the ipad holder?
donna king Thanks! It's called Hoverbar: bit.ly/1qDJrFz
i want that one 😍😍😍😍 that table
very nice desk
Thanks! Brand new studio tour coming soon!
sub 2 my channel also what date is the new tour
Where did you get the containers for the markers? I am looking for them so that I can set my markers up the same way. Thank you in advance.
I'm an artist who is into vinyl too.
Bro love your hat!! What brand is it?
This particular one is just an old Dockers hat that used to belong to my grandfather. I got it after he passed away and it brings me luck :) These days, I buy new hats from Goorin Brothers (www.goorin.com/)
That table is a great idea with the markers at the top.I know what I'll be making for my colour pencils etc. The glove at 15 bucks is not a bad idea__I use my fingerless gloves , ie I cut the fingers off the gloves I get at the local Chinese $2 shop ! V for Vendetta 🔥
thin it with medium n water mixture
You mentioned your printer, can I ask which model it is?
Thanks =)
Ben Knowles Sure! It's the Epson WF-7510. I'll add the link to the video notes, too.
I have the same desk is there any way you can show or let me know exactly how you did the marker holder I have the same problem with storage my studio is in my loft
I'll try to work it into one of my next videos, or maybe do a short blog tutorial about it! Thanks for the suggestion :)
Cheers!
In the first part of the video, where did you get that table at the left side of your drafting table?
On the left? Honestly I don't remember. It's just a cheap folding table with a plastic top. I'm honestly blanking on where it came from :(
Andrew Jones Thanks!
Would you please share the name/model # of your printer? I'm in the market for a new one.
What I have is the Epson WF-7510, but it's been updated to the WF-7610 here: amzn.to/2u4BtB4
Thanks for that info. I clicked the link and Amazon noted that that model is not available so Iooked at a few similar. I knew it would be a lot more $$ than a typical home office printer, but didn't realize the difference would that great. I think a trip to Best Buy/Staples, etc. is needed.
Yeah it's not super cheap, but could be way worse :) I think the added expense is because it's "wide format" and can print/scan up to 13" x 19".
Yes! It is that wide format that I was attracted by plus your note that it scanned so well.
We call "lightboxing" --- TRACING! -
Keith Peters nothing wrong with tracing, especially if you are tracing your own rough sketch layouts to save time, fool...
Did you make that template for the marker swatches ? If so can you email it to me ? Or tell me where to get it?
Here's the one I've been using: files.atlantajones.com/Prismacolor%20Marker%20Chart.pdf
Can't say for sure if it's still up-to-date with their current colors, though. I'll have to look around and see if there's a newer one.
Which is the name and model of the table?
YAHUSHA KING it’s the “Studio Designs 10050 Futura Craft Station”. See the first link in the description for all the product links. Thanks for watching!

You know you're from Atlanta if you've got a breeze card lying around lol
Ha! That's true!

Where did you get the underneath light?
