I'd love to get my hands on one but I'm not paying markup (which many Toyota dealers are still charging on all models), and this will be a very high demand vehicle for them. I expect availability to be in short supply for a while. Realistically it will probably be 2 or 3 years before they're easy to find without markups.
I'm still curious to see the fuel economy, particularly on the hybrid model. There was a slip-up on the 2024 Land Cruiser page that claimed 27 mpg combined for that vehicle with the same powertrain. If this truck can achieve 26-27 mpg combined (in real world conditions), it will be an absolute game changer, especially with the performance the hybrid max is sure to deliver.

Great episode! Love the passion the product planners have for their products and how customer focused they are. Would have loved to see some engineering diagrams and a breakdown of the engine architecture. Savagegeese had an interview like this regarding the Colorado and did a complete breakdown on GM’s 2.7T which was quite interesting how they created the engine for durability and flexibility.
My one ask is to set a nationally advertised price with a reasonable MSRP to avoid all the dealer add-on fees and hassles.

Excellent! Sheldon Brown is a guy that I feel I could just sit back and chat vehicles for hours. I really enjoy these types of interviews and format with engineers of vehicles I’m interested.
As far as product packaging requests, ideally I would like the ability to spec:
    1. TRD ORP with the Ventilated Seats, Signature LED headlights and even HUD.
    2. Limited trim without chrome. Black chrome or black would be more palatable. Likely already in product roadmap, but not at launch; Limited Nightshade. Offer that at launch and I’d bet the team would realize a higher percentage of Limited sales. Many, not all, dislike the chrome on that trim. Don’t make us wait two years for the release of that sub-trim!
Colors… we need another Cavalry Blue or even a brighter Neptune Blue type color offered on Tacoma on the new generation!

Hybrid + Turbo? Hard pass. Ill keep my reliable simple V6. Secondly, I was really hoping for 4wd full time or awd across the entire product line in addition to 4wd part time. Having 4wd on mixed wet/dry pavement is crucial for those living above the mason dixon line. My current tacoma is just a pain when I need more traction but will encounter dry pavement or tight turns. Ford has a nice system for this

I'm a manual enthusiast and I currently own 2 of them, but even I'm getting tired of this line of questioning. Every manual guy, myself included in years past, don't understand that it's all about economies of scale and emissions standards. It's simply not worth fighting for when the manufacturers KNOW they won't sell enough to get a ROI, not to mention them dragging down their fleet fuel economy numbers. The thing that frustrates me the most is that 90% of the so called enthusiasts that whine about disappearing manuals don't buy them when they are available, so whose fault is it that they're going away?

Personally I am skeptical as I have been over the Tundra/Sequoia turbo v6. It's Toyota or I wouldn't even entertain it. But trucks are crazy expensive these days. Crazy expensive. It's a lot of money to pay for a 4 banger regardless. But being a turbo 4 banger is a gamble in my book. I am sure Toyota has tested and perfected it, but it's still a turbo 4 banger.

Killing the access cab was such a poor a decision. Use mine multiple times a day. Sheldon needs to do a ride along with me to show him how much I use them. They made the utility trim have less utility. Have owned Toyotas for 30+ years, Toyota never fails to be a let down. They always seem to get a few things wrong, next vehicle purchase will most likely be a Ford F150 Super Cab. That and, us die hards want diesel not a hybrid, easy 30 mpgs, have it run on biofuel like they have available in Europe for emissions regs. See the new Land Cruiser Prado is getting a hybrid diesel, that plus biofuel, isn’t that even better for the environment?

As far as feedback goes to Mr.Brown in regard to the 2024 Tacoma, here are my personal thoughts:
Things that I love: I absolutely love the design and look of this truck it's been in NEED of a refresh for quite some time now. Being in 2023, having the latest technologies in the interior was a great decision given the digital gauge cluster offers customization of the information I want to see and rolling over the infotainment screen from the Tundra. My personal favorite is the addition of the Heads-Up Display and the pop-out JBL speaker on the dash as both make the driving experience and utilization, in my opinion, game-changing technology. I also love the idea of going hybrid with the mid-size and full-size trucks as many of the other brands are jumping straight into EVs as the market for them isn't where it needs to be yet. Having all four wheels with disc brakes instead of only rear drum brakes is a HUGE improvement this time around, so I am quite happy with that.
Things I wish it had or am concerned about: Now I understand that those involved with development were somewhat limited on what they could do for the Tacoma, but I would have LOVED to see a front differential lock included on trims such as the TRD Pro and Trailhunter, more specifically the latter. While Tacoma has proven to be quite off-road capable stock, competitors of Toyota have this feature and I would have liked to know if that was something that was thought about when developing. One thing that has many concerned is will the 4-cylinder be as reliable as the V6 in previous models? It has been brought up by several content creators I follow as well as those within my group, so it's definitely a question worth asking. Last but not least, while I think gas mileage will increase given this hybrid powertrain, my biggest concern is how competitive will prices be given that many competitors also have refreshes for their vehicles and the features that they offer. I worry that while Toyota says they will not do mark-ups, I currently have seen that not to be the case. I am only thinking out loud at this point as I know he doesn't really have a say in prices, but its definitely something worth mentioning.

Manual, 2.4, leaf-spring, 4x4, short cab, long bed. In Canada... basically modern interpretation of my dad's 1985 22RE. Unlike many, I welcome the turbo for high altitude use, or maybe because I'm a Subaru guy. Really looking forward to this vehicle, even though I'm lovin' my '17 4Runner as is. And yeah, Overland Expo was an absolute Toyota-fest in the early years, even on the East Coast, making my purchase of the 4Runner a no-brainer.

First and foremost great job on the design!!! Currently drive a 2017 Limited. Great additions from what I have seen so far with the bumpers, adjusting suspension, interior, drop down running boards, etc. Have yet to see estimated MPGs, which helped influence moving from my '04 to the '17. The one complaint from my current truck still incoming on the new Limited is chrome in abundance. I want the increased luxury, while maintaining the utility. My Tacoma is my daily, date night, long trip, and working vehicle and when I replace it the new one will take that role. Wish list for the new limited... Black out option from the factory rims to grille, to emblems, exhaust tip, and door handles. A latching gas door mmost toyotas already have these. Approach lights (aftermarket versions on my current 2017), On board compressor for all models above the SR5. Possibly a "rugged/Blackout" Limited with black flairs, mirror caps, and the previously mentioned blackout of chrome.

They hit the ball out of the park with this truck. I fell in love instantly which I can't say I ever have with any vehicle before. To switch me from a car to a mid sized truck is a pat on the back to them alone, I've always been a car guy. But what absolutely sold me was the 6 speed manual. I think the only reason I went to the dealer ASAP to reserve my spot was the manual, I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
Beautiful truck, amazing work on Toyota's part as always, a little dissapointed I had to settle for the lower TRD model in order to get a manual, but I'm still super stoked to get my hands on one. Now I just really hope the prices ain't out of this world insane. The thing that's fully going to get my in the drivers seat is the inital MSRP, and market adjustment dealer markups. I will walk out of the dealer if they try to stick my with any market adjustments, and I told them that the day I reserved.

I find it odd that you didn't feature the TRD Offroad in HI since it's one of the most popular trims. In any case, I like the redesign for the most part and I am seriously considering purchasing a TRD Offroad i-Force Max long bed 2 or 3 years down the road, after any initial launch issues are resolved. I think this hybrid powertrian looks great on paper, but looking at the numbers, it seems like you sacrificed efficiency for performance. Personally, I would have preferred a more balanced approach, something like 310hp/420lb-ft and a few more mpgs. I get that every brand is engaging in these absurd spec wars, but for those of us who buy these trucks as both commuter and adventure vehicles still want a good balance between performance, fuel economy and reliability. Also, please don't jack the price up into the stratosphere. The current get Tacoma is already overpriced, especially considering its many flaws.

$75k for a tricked out over the top interior manual transmission truck is THE stupidest idea! Proving most of you only care about the people that CAN afford something like that. If the new Tacoma TRD Pro undercut the canyon by a reasonable amount and came in a manual, I think you’d sell more of THOSE. Selling quantity is only a combination of desirability meeting fun quality for a reasonable price. Making something for 75-80k kicks out half the market.

Very interesting interview thanks so much. I tow a 4000 pounds camping trailer with my ‘19 Highlander SE. I love camping, and I also love to do hiking in some remote places and I think I reached the off-road limit of my Highlander. That’s why I will order an hybrid Trd off-road. I really hope that the new Tacoma will be a better vehicle for towing but I’m sure it will be a better vehicle for off-roading. Also, I am in Quebec, Canada. It will be nice if some wheels of the current generation would fit the new one because OEM wheels are more durable for harsh winter time with ice and salt and sand as we have a second set with dedicated winter tires. I know that the hybrid model will have bigger brakes, but I hope that some oem wheels will fit, as a lot of customer buy aftermarket wheels, and it’s pretty easy to find oem ones on marketplace. Can’t wait to order my first truck. I also hope that you shared the size of the bed with cap companies so there will be models available at the same time, especially Alu-cab. One last thing: even with a weight distribution hitch my Highlander rear is lowered a 2-3 inches while towing. I really hope that my future Tacoma will be straight with my Anderson WDH. Thanks again!

Wheels are the worst place to put money. They get corroded. Stick with simple steel wheels. You csn fix steel wheels if you ding the rim unlike aluminum which will chip then you are replacing it. Any steel wheel looks great if ypu dpray it with black plasti-dip.

    • @jean-michelgastonguay7990
      @jean-michelgastonguay7990 ปีที่แล้ว

Steel wheels get a lot more corroded than mags wheels and they become rusty orange. Mags get also a bit affected, but keep a look that is a lot better. OEM wheels are often sold used on marketplace and really do the job for winter use. I've had 30 winters of driving in harch winter conditions with sand and calcium and salt on the road so I know what i'm talking about. Anyway it wasn't the point of my comment.@@billsoderholm3125

The TRD Pro with that Ice white with the Red interior had me sold on getting one. Also those lights on the sides of the bed. I know it's not standard (right???) on the Pro but my current truck I'm always finding I have to look around my truck at night and I have to use a flashlight every time and those lights seem like they would come in handy. I'd like to see a video at night of either the Pro or Trailhunter of how bright those lights on the outside of the bed are as far as distance looking toward the ground. (The area around the bed)

Good interview, but I wish you had asked him about the elephant in the room when it comes to big 4-cylinder engines: NVH. Why didn’t they go to a six cylinder, which has better NVH? Was it cost? Was it emissions? Was it fuel economy? What did they do to improve NVH on the 4-cylinder?

Can we get the information on the L4 as it pertains to durability. GM built the 2.7 for truck applications. Is Toyota taking the same approach. A truck application needs beefer engine to handle things like towing.

I really dislike the power tailgate. I'm okay with screens, but I despise when crucial features are digital, only readout or engagement. It's a truck, I use it as a truck, and I go out of cell reception. Reliability is my number 1 priority and always will be. I like physical buttons and basic instrument gauges. Past that toys are okay, but don't integrate toys to the point where if they go wrong, you lose something that you actually need.

Great interview...my only disappointment with the truck is no front locker option. I understand the traction control system will handle most situations but a truck of this caliber should offer the added capability of a front locker.

I had a 2019 TRD Sport with a manual 6 speed for a couple of years. Was blown away at the time that adaptive cruise control worked so well with the third pedal. Would definitely buy one again, but one downside is if you plan to tow a heavy trailer with it, go automatic.

On the Limited; 1. Could you please put a center Arm wrest with cup holders in the back seat! 2. Also, there is a cut out for peoples heads in the back seat. Could you just raise the ceiling height over all. My sons are 6'1. They can barely move their heads around once they sit down. 3. Please put an option like the Ford Maverick, where I can raise the tailgate halfway to allow Plywood to fit out the back.
    4. Give a non chrome grill and Rims to the Limited, like a powder coated look.

We need a longboy Tacoma-based SUV. 4Runner? The Sequoia is too massive for its usable interior space but it would be nice to have essentially a really extended Landcruiser with a PROPER TAILGATE. Also, give the world an option for a dirt cheap $20k city truck like the OG Tacoma. Like, literally just take a Prius V and chop the roof off of it. It doesn't have to have all this fancy overlanding crapola.

I’d like to see the off-road version. The pro and Trailhawk versions in my opinions are overpriced and have a lot of tacky stuff that I wouldn’t want for the money. Having owned a 3rd gen and disliking it, I’m glad they changed the powertrain. Only reason I’m considering a 4th gen. I’d like to see the MPG numbers. At a point with the economy where price and MPG are really gonna dictate my next purchase. If gas will be going back up to $4-5 a gallon in my area I may just decide to go with a Maverick due to my commute.
