Thai Seafood Feast: Family Vacation in Pattaya

One of the reasons we had to come back from Koh Samui so soon ( • Bangkok to Koh Samui &... ) was because my wife Ying had already made plans months ago with her sister’s and family to take a quick family vacation to a beach house in Pattaya, about an hour from Bangkok on the beach. I really didn’t have much of a clue what we were going to do at the beginning of the day, all I knew is that we rented a car, we were heading to Pattaya, and I was driving.
We left Bangkok at about 8 am after picking up our car, and after getting out of Bangkok we drove to Chonburi, and more specifically to an area called Ang Sila to go to Ang Sila Market (ตลาดอ่างศิลา), one of the best fresh fish and seafood markets in the area. I think it was my first time to go to this market, and I was pretty excited, not only because I love going to markets, but also because I love seafood. Ang Sila Market (อ่างศิลา) is a pretty good sized seafood market, and they have a variety of both dried seafood and snacks, and fresh seafood. We went to the market for the fresh seafood. I was walking around filming and taking as many photo as I could, but my wife and her family started shopping for our Thai seafood feast. They bought a bunch of seafood, probably more than I can remember. This was going to turn out to be a great Thai family vacation to Pattaya!
We got back into the car and drive to Pattaya and arrived to our hotel - a family style beach house at a place called Moonlight On The Sea Resort. Our house was pretty basic, but it was quite nice, facing the sea, with 4 rooms I think, and a really nice open downstairs and full kitchen. It was the type of house that was made for an entire family or a group of friends to come and hang out and eat and enjoy a peaceful side of Pattaya. The house also happened to be right next to the famous Sanctuary of Truth Pattaya - although we didn’t go inside because it has a pretty high entrance fee. After arriving to the beachhouse and checking in, we got straight to cooking all the seafood - ok, they all got straight to cooking, and I watched and took as many photos and videos as I could.

But I just want to say that one of the best ways to enjoy Thai seafood is to just cook it plain, either boil, grill, or steam, or anything plain, and eat it with what in Thai is called nam jim seafood, or seafood sauce. As long as you have a big bowl of Thai seafood sauce you can cook the seafood completely plain, and you’ll be able to have an amazing Thai seafood meal.
Here are the ingredients for this recipe:
Just crush or grind the garlic and chilies, then mix everything else together in a bowl. You’re not done yet. Part of cooking Thai food is taste testing. You need to taste test to make sure it’s the balance of flavors you’re after. I like mine more sour and spicy, while my family likes it sweeter. So keep mixing and matching until you’ve got a perfect Thai seafood sauce. Let the recipe ingredients just be a guide.
That was really it for the day for this family vacation to Pattaya. I had a great time at Ang Sila Market (อ่างศิลา), and our seafood feast was incredible.

Nice video. We have that dipping sauce in Vietnam. But the go-to sauce for seafood is salt-pepper-lime. I find it allows you to taste the delicate seafood, instead of masking it.
+Kate Steventon Or... God forbid, you let the guy eat seafood however he wants... Dipping sauces & seasonings are used very commonly in Vietnam for flavor in general and to enhance the flavor of the seafood. Wow, imagine that... Sauces and seasonings...

+Khanh Ho Haha thank you! I'm Vietnamese as well and I know how serious people can get with our seasonings and dipping sauces. They're crazy flavorful and do justice to any seafood. Her comment really annoyed me cause some people just aren't use to such strong flavors and realize people enhance food with other stuff!
+Kate Steventon Well yeah... When're you're eating seafood you don't want a sauce to taste too overwhelming and completely overpower the natural taste of it but still add flavor...
*****I agree with you, I do prefer seafood with just just a bit of lime, salt and pepper. Crabs are delicious when natural, when drown in tomato sauce and chiles as usual in Mexico all you get is a faint flavor or crab. But everybody does as he wants. Try a day just a drop of habanero sauce instead of pepper for 3 or 4 big spoons of lime or lemon juice and salt, probably you'll like it.
for me the face that you make after every eat adds extra charm to your video, keep doing this, its interesting
POLLACHI CRAB MASALA
Ingredients
Crab(Njandu)
Bangalore tomatoes(ripe)
Gingelly oil - 1 - 2 tbsp
Thick coconut milk - 2 - 3 cups
For grinding:-
Curry Powder-4 table spoons
Aniseeds(Perinjeerakam)(powdered)
Cumin seeds(Jeerakam)(powdered)
Turmeric powder
Popppy seeds(Khashakhasha)(powdereed)
Curry leaves(powdered)
Ginger paste
Garlic paste
Coconut paste
Coriander powder
Kashmiri chilly powder
(preferably Everest)
Onion paste
Pepper(powdered)
Salt - As reqd
(Note use the ingredients according to the crab quantity)
METHOD
1)Grind together all ingredients in a mixer grinder(except tomatoes).
2)Heat the gingelly oil in a pan or a kadai.
3)Fry the curry leaves and the masala paste.
4)Add tomatoes and fry, till it gets cooked.
5)Add the cleaned crab and mix well with the masala.
6)Add hot water and fry well.
7)Add thick coconut milk and cook again.
8)Cook, till it becomes dry.
Can be had dry or semi-dry.
Serve with rice or bread.

Oh, i miss Pattaya. We stayed at Markland Hotel... It was nice then every lunch time we go to the Beachfront for pizza and Hilton for Steak at Sizzlers. Then dig in to street foods kebab and then banana rotti. Awesome. Thanks for this blog. I remember how awrsome Thai food is……especially the seafood grills small resto in front of the beach. It's his signature. Not only that but he doesn't always do it. He's so polite, he always smiles after a bite but you can tell when he doesn't really like food he's tasting. He's just a sweet, passionate guy doing what he loves.

I LOVE SEAFOOD!! I was born close to a beach or sea in China, only 10 minutes walking distance, so seafoods were daily dishes to have. My uncles were fishermen, going to their house everyday just looking at different sea animals was amazing. Great video, Mark!:) hope you are having fun in TaiWan.

Obviously I am not the only one that thinks he is a complete over actor when it comes to the taste of the foods he eats. I am not impressed by the act, but I am impressed by the foods. I am simple, love foods from all over the place and do not react in such an extreme way over great tasting foods. I enjoy them in a more internalized and personal way. I suppose that for entertainment purposes it is okay, but it is overdone.

I've never been so scared of anyone's face expression before until I stumbled on this channel. I showed my sister while she was laying watching a tv show and I put it front of her face and went "look at this guy" and she screamed 😂😂 The food is evidently delicious but his face scares me too much that it sorts of ruin the appetite for me 😭😭 but I've seen 3 vids so far because he has good content. I just skip through his face.

You lucky devil ,i spent june in thailand and i only had 3 days in pattaya visiting friends ,that seafood looked amazing scallops ,prawns ,mussles squid what a meal ,the best part is that it doesnt break the bank to eat good fresh seafood there.

Favorite things was the whole grilled squid my favoritest way to prepare them, so easy, so tasty. People who gut and skin calamari don't know what they are missing the eggs being my favorite part. When I was young my mom used to braise whole squid in a special sauce combing shoyu, sake', a little brown sugar, and ginger. Braising time was just a few minutes so quick and yummy meal.
