I mostly want this to recreate the limited but beautiful art seen in PC 98 games. Aside from it looking breath taking, I'm a believer that dithering in those games wasn't done by hand but done with special tools. MultiPaint System is the only program I found that demonstrates this. Dithering was also just a result of working with the limitations of the number of colors that could be displayed on screen, and mixing those colors together to create detail, lighting and shading. The same can be applied to Flipnote studio too, as the OG FNS had only blue, red and black/white so you had to be clever with your mixing.
You're an absolute unit, MortMort. I've largely ignored or just didn't even realize there was a brush feature when using Asesprite. Thank you for sharing this, you've given me the ability to focus more on my lineart than taking so much time dithering by hand.
i just started pixelart lately, and i found out about ur channel and i can't say enough of how much ur tutorials helped me find motivation in this i was a sucker for pixelart games and i've always wanted to draw it im improving days after days keep up the amazing works man, love ur channel
:O damn i am learning more and more about the functions of aseprite and i have to say that it's been only getting better and better! no wonder it's called "one of the best pixel engines" :)
In comics and mangas we call dithering “screen tones” because what page it’s in it completely changes the tone of the story for a short time because it makes the story very dramatic.
It's actually just a comic term. Old marvel and DC comics also used this. It comes from screen printing when doing newpapers and such. It's just cheaper to print using dots than a big ol blot of ink on paper.
after selecting the pattern and hitting ctrl+b in the top left there will be a menu that says "paint brush" drop that down and change it to "pattern aligned at source" :)
After using this tutorial . I got inspired and made tuns of brushes . Who by the way there not only for pixel programs . But also for paintins . I need to post some of my new stuff in you discored to see what you guys think about it
man i'm going insane trying to get this to work. i follow the steps exactly, but instead of it making a two pixel brush where the two pixels never cross over each other; it's making a brush similar to the slanted line brush on ms paint. so, if i draw in a straight diagonal line, it will look as its supposed to. but any movement will cause the two pixels to touch and get rid of that dithering affect. why? i feel like i'm an idiot
I just subscribed to your channel Can you pls make a tutorial on how to make landscapes or background cus I have problems making them for my platformer game
i'm a little bit late to the party, but is it possible somehow to increase/decrease the size of this brushes, once you created them? like with the normal paint brush
Great, but how to you make it snap to its own size when drawing, I'm drawing and its not repeating the pattern perfectly, there is a snap to brush size option or something? EDIT: Pattern Aligned to Source, figured it out... for me it did not default to that so it might be an extra step.
Hello Mort. In the last version did you noticed something strange with inks? I think there is something wrong with them - Copy Alpha + Color especially and Alpha compositing - it is worst when you swap between them - once done you go from one to another there are 2 things that can happen - the brush acts like normal ink without alpha or other when your opacity is lower than half the value - it is completely transparent - just nothing happens there and all other inks start behaving strangely. But in general swapping inks lead to very strange results. Did you noticed something like that or is it just me?
Thanks a lot!. Just wondering, if theres an option to change the order of the brushes when I've locked/saved them?, and is there is a way to export them as it can be done on PS?
This is probably not the best place to ask, but does Asesprite have a similar feature to Photoshop's Smudge Tool? That would allow you to smudge pixels over others, taking on the colours beneath?
What is the name of the music at the end of your videos? I want to listen it all! Also i'm watching your pixel art tutorials to improve my work so thank you, you have a really nice style ;)
I know this is super late but the genre is Chiptune. There is a band called 'Anamanaguchi' that mixes chiptune music with live instruments. They're pretty cool if you wanna check them out. FlashyGoodness, Virt, Fear of Dark, Aethernaut, and Vince Kaichan are also good Chiptune artists.
I don't get it. I followed your instructions to make the first brush, but instead of making a uniform dithering pattern, it just creates solid lines. It's like it's being stamped instead of snapping to the grid.
I was shocked to find out this programme didnt have these brushes already, thank god for your tutorial, thank you!
I've been loving Aseprite more and more, and didn't know it could do half of what your videos have shown me. Thank you for the tuts!
OH hi Noah
for anyone who's just making an offset line, set the pattern aligned to dropdown to "pattern aligned to source"
Much appreciated!
thank you

I feel so stupid for not thinking of this myself, I wasted so many minutes dithering 'by hand'. T_T
Lol thanks for the video!
Sander lolz, me too! Great video content on this channel!
Sometimes my tendency to overthink before actually getting started on a project turns out to save a lot of time in game development.
Father Mort comes back to guide my lost artist soul once more

That is not why

Glad you like it!
In manga/comic, it's called screentones.
Ok weeb
And it's used because there's no grey ink, just different amounts of black

thanks dude, currently working on a little game with my brother and this is gonna help a lot ;)
How's the game?
Am I the only one having trouble with this? I follow it but when I draw it just acts like a normal brush with no spaces.

Great tutorial - thank you sir!
How on earth is aseprite this good.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Are there any way to increase the brush size? (I mean the custom one)
There's not an intended way, but I like to use the spray pencil tool as a workaround, just put the spray width on 1 and spray speed on 100 or so :p
Hey thanks! Im gonna try this out :)
Actually MortMort is very G-o-o-d

Ah thank you so much! This comment saved me. I was banging my head wondering how the hell he managed to get the brushes to stick as a perfect pattern

These should be default brushes in Aseprite.
