i'm exploding a little bit by watching this video. when you drew the computer i was like HOW. HOW does it looks and feels and conveys so simple but it's actually so complicated.
Sinclair ZX-81 and some Spectrum games had the problem you were discussing of making the main character visible among the background using only two colors. Because of this, a lot of times they would put a thick black outline around the main character (and sometimes the other characters or creatures, etc) to make them stand out more. Many games did not do this, however, and they ended up being a huge mess.
That is an awesome job. I sometimes watch long plays of video games on the ZX Spectrum computer. Even though the computer is capable of displaying multiple colours on the screen, individual sprites and objects are shown in a one-bit format. It's hard to differentiate objects, though, and I think that it's because the screen resolution is too low If I were to try drawing and animating in one-bit, I would use a high resolution, and I would also surround characters with a border to keep them from blending in with the backgrounds.
Have you seen the game Gato Roboto? It implements a really neat feature of being in the 1-bit style but you can change the colors used in the style via collectibles.
I think if I first saw this, I'd confuse the smoke for a big opening or gash in the wall. Maybe if there was some black in all the white, it would look even more like dispersing smoke? Really cool pipes btw.
first off your art work is amazing and I don't want you to louse that. but something to keep in mind is each thing you add represents some programing logic, so one thing you can capture is games that took a lot programing of work vrs games that took low programing work. so the air conditioning unit with the black line around it this tells me that it could be something the player can interact with or for some reason was added as a separate foreground element perhaps the air condition at some point in the game will shake and smoke and brake or it could just be part of the background. where when the air condition has the white line around it I know for sure 100% this is part of the background and likely static not intractable. my point this is the entrance to the cryo lab, it's 3 rooms to the save point, and 2 room to the boss, this room sets the mood for the cryo lab, my health and battery power are carried over from the last section, their is a large intractable. what if I arrived at this room with a half of a heart and only ! bar of battery, is reaching the save point possible or defeating the boss possible. I bet that intractable is freeing a helper from the chamber, so think the creature in the tank is made to come out that looks like a flying that will perhaps pick the player up make the creatures legs match the head or turn the creature in to something that can walk with the player. my point is not criticize but to think about the programing and play threw of the game to make realistic art work. to theme a game picture based around a game that took a lot of work or a little.
I’m so glad someone else loves 1 bit as much as I do.
It's great! I find it relaxing not having to worry about colour selection 😅

I've never tried 1bit style , but maybe now i'll give it a try
first off your art work is amazing and I don't want you to louse that. but something to keep in mind is each thing you add represents some programing logic, so one thing you can capture is games that took a lot programing of work vrs games that took low programing work. so the air conditioning unit with the black line around it this tells me that it could be something the player can interact with or for some reason was added as a separate foreground element perhaps the air condition at some point in the game will shake and smoke and brake or it could just be part of the background. where when the air condition has the white line around it I know for sure 100% this is part of the background and likely static not intractable. my point this is the entrance to the cryo lab, it's 3 rooms to the save point, and 2 room to the boss, this room sets the mood for the cryo lab, my health and battery power are carried over from the last section, their is a large intractable. what if I arrived at this room with a half of a heart and only ! bar of battery, is reaching the save point possible or defeating the boss possible.
