He also made a bill of material that you can reference which has all the items I used in my tutorial for the Neptune build, which is linked here: www.mediafire.com/file/tupgzrchjqbmw0l/BOM.zip/file He also posted a build guide on GBATEMP linked here: gbatemp.net/blogs/blog/sega-neptune-building-a-sega-neptune.4931/details Again, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this project!
@@Dan-TechAndMusic This is actually what I was thinking. Repurposing the Saturn's cartridge slot (which was rumored to initially be a backwards compatibility Genesis/Mega Drive slot, no idea if that was ever proven legit or false) would be brilliant. I think it would only be a difficult build in GETTING a spare Saturn shell for most people.
Making the Sega Saturn backwards compatible with Genesis, Sega CD and 32X games should’ve been a no-brainer, especially when for years I thought the cartridge slot on top of the console was for inserting Genesis and 32X games.
I thought this as well, especially with how the Saturn controller was almost exactly like a 6 button Genesis controller. That would have made the Saturn perform 10 times better in sales.
i thought cartridge slot on Saturn are for "Sega might have CD based games and Cartridge based games on Saturn, just like Master System where there's Cartridge games and Card games"
Great build. One small tip......When applying waterslide decals, always apply to a gloss surface, then clear coat back to matte. You will avoid that weird silvering look from the decal film AND the clear coat will protect the decals from being scratched off. Or use rub transfers.
So glad to see this mod getting more attention. It’s not exactly cheap, but its definitely really impressive. What would be epic is to see somebody like RetroGameRestore injection mould these and sell it as a mod kit. And or use this design to create an FPGA clone console like the Mega SG but with 32X support.
As a practicing physician I have time for simple mods only- which this certainly isn’t! But as I still have a childhood 32x/genesis in a box somewhere, a mod service sounds great and I’m sure someone would profit by it 😮
With a large enough community to buy the mod shells, injection can become viable, but you do need quite a lot of people to fork out the tooling (think quite a few thousands of dollars in molds). I imagine silicone mold vacuum injection might be a good middle ground (or rather, for low volume, the perfect solution).
3D Printing it would cost thousands less than injection molding. I used to work in an injection molding plant. The molds are like 10,000 a piece, not to mention the cost of the machine they need to be installed in.

Amazing build as always! One tip for tapping bosses "screw posts" is to take a Dremel with a cutoff wheel and very carefully cut a small slot in the screw threads. This creates a way for the plastic shavings to not jam up inside the boss which can crack it. Given that the shell is SLA resin you have to be even more careful when doing this as I have exploded many SLA bosses and had to epoxy the ever loving hell out of them and re-tap them.
Can relate with how annoying tapping SLA prints can be... I've used an actual tap 1st time I did it, and did a few test pieces before to check the hole clearance. Even with a tap (in fact what you did with slotting a screw, just like those PC fan screws that do exactly that), when the hole was just 0.1mm too small I cracked the damn test part, and increasing that 0.1mm made it a bit lose... I wonder what kind of techniques would be effective to add threaded inserts to resin prints, maybe just epoxy gluing them and that's it?
20:46 Because "Triad Power Supply" is incredibly vague and unhelpful: A 9V / 1.3A power brick, center positive. Don't go below this amperage, but any amperage higher is safe. Sega's default brick is 10V at 0.85A (8.5W), and while the voltages aren't exact, you need those additional 3.5W to keep the 32X happy. You'll need to adapt the 5.5mm/1.2mm barrel plug to a EIAJ-03 4.75mm/1.7mm barrel plug used on the Model 2. And be careful not to mix it up with the Sega CD power supply, as it has a negative center polarity and will make either part very unhappy.

Absolutely LOVE this build and the fantastic shell! Turned out fantastic! Has anyone figured out a good solution (if possible) for integrating a Sega CD, too? Just curious!
This is a work of art! There are two things I love most about this; as far as the boards inside go, it still kind of has that behemoth/frankenstein's monster vibe going on. Secondly, the addition of two DMG screws is adorable.
I wish Sega would have delayed the Saturn to make it a better 3D machine as the PSX destroyed it and for the time being released the Neptune. I would actually have loved it if Sega had a Neptune that also integrated the Sega CD. A Genesis/32X/CD in one would have been awesome. And it would have been nice if there was more time for more 32X games to be developed.
This could have been a console to take on the Super Nintendo for a while longer. What Sega could have done is ensure that the Neptune's software was compatible with the Saturn. When the Saturn eventually was released, you also released a compatible CD player for the Neptune bringing both in line (any extra grunt the new Saturn came with was enclosed in the CD attachment). Maybe it happened in a parallel universe.
Looks so sexy i love the look of the Sega 32x Neptune and good work Nacho. I definitely would love to the get that Nep console mould to make my own too
Happy Thanksgiving! This is an absolutely awesome mod. I see that the expansion connector is still available but does the shell mod allow it to be able to connect to an actual Sega CD?
@@JarlBarbossa Oh I know. But I want to connect it to the thing and play the actual discs. As dumb as that sounds. Lol. But he did say in the video that it made it so Sega CD games don't work on the Everdrive.
Awesome tutorial! If only Sega had released this instead of the separate 32X & focused on this only (due to backward compatibility being readily available on it) instead of dividing their forces between it & the Saturn, they could've thrived a few more years & maybe would've been in a much better position with 3rd party developers going into the Dreamcast. I was jacked for the Neptune & when it didn't come to be, I focused on the SNES & eventually the N64 until I got the Dreamcast in late 2000. I was hoping Sega would do a Neptune Mini to make up for not releasing it then & have 20-25 Genesis games, 10-15 32X games & a handful of Sega CD games built in, with the ability to add more ROMs to it thru download. Would be cool & I'll bet hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would be willing to shell out plenty of $ for it
Great video! I would LOVE to see something on mobile modifications! My dream has always been to build a great-looking mobile Dreamcast with plugins to allow for a second controller and output to a TV (basically, it can connect to TV and you can play with friends). I saw a few Dreamcast builds that had beautiful screens, wonderful looking ergonomics to the progenitor controllers and even usable VMU insert. That was years ago, but it showed it could be done. What I have NEVER seen done was the external plugin ability for a TV connection. You pull this off, count on my monthly subscription for life. The Dreamcast community is still very much alive (and heartbroken when the Dreamcast 2 was vaguely announced). Stay amazing!
Nice. I made one after I made my Jaguar PlayOne console just over 10 years ago as part of my What if series. Did not post that video live yet, but will be fun when I do. :-)
I am BLOWN AWAY!!!!!! It is GORGEOUS!!!! And WELL WORTH the $320 price tag for the shell alone!!!! (okay, it's REALLY EXPENSIVE just for a plastic shell, but that is THE BEST 3D Print quality I have EVER seen!!!! So paying that price is a matter of passion and dedication to the project) It looks EXACTLY how I have always imagined it to be. The soldiering work is a bit advanced, but not as hard as some of the projects you've shown here before..... - EXCELLENT JOB TITO, DVIZIX, and EVERYONE ELSE responsible for making the WORK OF ART POSSIBLE!!!! Thank you Tito for sharing the build too!! YOU ROCK!!!!
When you wire the rgb wires to the 3BP, it shows you removed R48 (as it says to do in zaxour's guide) but when you wire sync, it is back in place. 11:38 So do you need R48 in this use case?
Awesome video. Building a SEGA Neptune is kind of like a long lost holy grail of consoles. The World never got to see the finalised console in action, but thanks to the stellar modding community this is now a reality. Good stuff. Cheers.
Quite an incredible project, to bring to existence something that never hit the market, and not even having in hand the museum prototypes to base the shell on, is sure a work of passion. About injection molding the shells: the models themselves are there already, but the cost of the tooling is astronomic. You'll want to gather at least 1000 buyers to fork out the tooling for it to be worth it, since it can go into several thousands of dollars, specially at the size of the device. I work with that kinda stuff so I don't get shocked anymore when I see a small product tooling cost go upwards of 40 thousand dollars (rather, I'm glad it's that CHEAP. It can get insane with big parts). One option for reducing the tooling cost for lower production batches/final prototypes is silicone molds with vacuum injection, you don't get near as many parts of the same molds, but the cost is far lower (albeit I haven't used this service yet to know the difference in costs). Still, you'll be forking quite a bit of cash so it takes a community to join up and pre-purchase it.
One thing to consider: Before assembly of the unit, apply the water slide decals first (making sure there are no bubbles), then go over the entire thing with 2-part clear gloss automotive urethane to blend the water slides into the finish, making them appear to have been silkscreened. After fully curing, go over it once more with a light, even coat of matte clearcoat. It will look even more like factory, and will be very well protected to boot. Of course, Ideally, it would be even better to have the logos painted during the mfg process :) Still an AWESOME build and product, and I would have absolutely loved to have one of these back in the day paired up with model 2 sega CD I had. Hell, I'd still love to have one. Now someone just needs to do the same for the Pluto!
@18:00 What glue do you use to readhere the feet and stickers? Reusing the glue doesn't work for me and I haven't found a glue that works as good as the original manufacturer glue.
That is rad. Never heard about this console before. Production quality on your videos is spot on as always and you keep introducing me to these crazy mods that make me want to attempt to emulate. Good stuff mate.
Was hoping this would be how to build a new Neptune from off-the-shelf parts. If I already have a Genesis and a 32X, I already functionally have a Neptune and I'm ready to play games on it without the risks of completely disassembling them and trying to do a Frankenstein job on consoles that already work just fine.
I have heard about the Sega Neptune when I first heard about it in the late 2000s early 2010s upon looking at cancelled video game consoles back in the day. And now seeing you make one, incredible, never thought we would see one nearly 28/30 years later after it's cancellation and such.
I wish someone sold these pre-made, I developed parkinsons now, and can no longer solder like i used to.. i watch all these awesome mods on your channel and wish I could do them
It would be so cool if Sega still had the prototype. Would be awesome to see how Sega had the PCB. I bet they had new custom chips. The 32x and Genesis were probably on one or two chips. The whole thing was probably very integrated. I have to wonder how much Sega invested in the Neptune just to trash it.

Ngl, seeing Tito sitting in a different spot from where he usually records caught me off guard 😂 Great video as always!
OMG is the godess from Planeptune!
This guy just bulidin’ a SEGA Neptune. This is an awesome video. You are seriously talented. I do not have the patience to make something like this.
I see that the expansion connector is still available but does the shell mod allow it to be able to connect to an actual Sega CD?
yes it is
@@gawlikcreations6956 Oh that's sweet. 🔥 Thank you.
You can play sega cd games off certain flash carts
@@JarlBarbossa Oh I know. But I want to connect it to the thing and play the actual discs. As dumb as that sounds. Lol. But he did say in the video that it made it so Sega CD games don't work on the Everdrive.
I can’t believe such detail for a console that didn’t have a lot of games. Amazing video as always.
con: have to cannibalize a genesis and a 32x.
I don’t think I would ever do this myself but I love watching these and knowing these exist.
If Sega would release this in 2023 I would instantly buy it. 😍 Love this console and big thanks to the developers of this.
This is fantastic! The shell looks gorgeous, nicely done.
Would be cool & I'll bet hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would be willing to shell out plenty of $ for it
This is cool! I bet it would look even better with actual nice paint job! That thing is screaming for some 2k satin clear at the very least.
Someone told him to go nepping and he did
Great video!
Cara, seu conteúdo é de altíssima qualidade, interessante e feito com classe e com um profissionalismo invejável! Parabéns! Saudações do Brasil!
Nice. I made one after I made my Jaguar PlayOne console just over 10 years ago as part of my What if series. Did not post that video live yet, but will be fun when I do. :-)
I didn't think there was anything left to say about vintage systems, but you are doing it. Subbed, great channel my dood
I brought 3 Neptunes back from Japan 20 years ago. Don't ask how I got them from Sega, someone will get in big trouble ;)
Now make the fictional Neptune console from Hyperdimension Neptunia!!!! With four working disc drives.
Good stuff.
Cheers.
IIRC, there was also supposed to be the "Pluto", which was a Sega Saturn that could play Genesis titles.
It’s the fact that the shell was concave that makes it look so good and dude pulled it off perfectly.
I’m here to show love !!! Get it on nacho !!!
How the he do you do those trippy shots. They look amazing

Dude you're GENIUS 🤩
The thing using only one power brick is by far the best feature. I'd do this mod if it came as a kit (and if my 32x weren't mysteriously dead)
Where can I buy the full console? Also, didn't the Neptune had a black Model 2 SEGA Saturn controller when it was shown in the 1995 announcement?
Was hoping this would be how to build a new Neptune from off-the-shelf parts. If I already have a Genesis and a 32X, I already functionally have a Neptune and I'm ready to play games on it without the risks of completely disassembling them and trying to do a Frankenstein job on consoles that already work just fine.
beautiful video. Even though id never get to try this, much appreciated from South Africa
I didn't realize there was a shell I could buy! Time to do a Neptune build!
I have heard about the Sega Neptune when I first heard about it in the late 2000s early 2010s upon looking at cancelled video game consoles back in the day. And now seeing you make one, incredible, never thought we would see one nearly 28/30 years later after it's cancellation and such.
That's so cool. I have everything Sega has made... This would look so good next to the others on my shelf. I really want one
i'm not a console modder, nor a repairman but, ur videos are like magic, i simply cannot not seeing them
Awesome build! Thank you for this video. Never had Sega Genesis or Saturn, but i love how looks games of that age and consoles design.
My boy made a Sega Neptune! What a bunch of absolute mad lads! Props!
How have I not seen this channel before? Subbed! All I need is a 32x :p
Getting the 32X to actually work with the metal brackets was incredibly obnoxious! This sounds amazing! 👌
8:18 I think it's cool motherboard says MARS
This is beautiful. Great work to everyone involved. It's really cool you have the option of restoring it, if desired, too.
For years i dreamed about to make one for my self. Gratulations it looks awesome.
I like watching your videos. Console modding has come a long way since I first saw Ben Heck in Wired Magazine almost 20 years ago. Very cool.
This man has the most soulless gaze I have ever come across.
Hi! I'm new in your channel. But a just love in your projects. Just Amazing!
You have the best intro of any gaming channel I've seen.
This is great, gaming enthusiasts like you guys are what gaming is all about ❤
I wish someone sold these pre-made, I developed parkinsons now, and can no longer solder like i used to.. i watch all these awesome mods on your channel and wish I could do them
Nice video, why was the original bottom shielding left out? Also are there many games released for the 32x that makes it worthwhile for this mod?
It would be so cool if Sega still had the prototype. Would be awesome to see how Sega had the PCB. I bet they had new custom chips. The 32x and Genesis were probably on one or two chips. The whole thing was probably very integrated. I have to wonder how much Sega invested in the Neptune just to trash it.
23:26 - But can it still function and fit connected to an actual Sega CD? (either model)
