In today’s episode, I’ll be building a brand new Game Boy DMG with a brand new motherboard, audio board and power board thanks to the Super DMG Kit! We can now save old damaged gameboys with this kit! And instead of using a standard DMG CPU, I’ll be using a CPU from a Super DMG. What a time to be alive!
Where to purchase assembled boards (WARNING: It has been brought to my attention that this kit has an issues with the link port. If you do not plan to use the link port than it will be okay. However, if you do plan to use the link port it can cause damage when connected to another Game Boy. Refer to the pinned comment below for more info): jt-studios.com/product/super-...

ATTENTION: it has been brought to my attention that the super DMG motherboard has an issue with the link port. The design on the board I used in the video has a couple traces that are incorrect and could cause damage if connected to another Game Boy via a link cable. Since my video was released it has been corrected by kamicane and the updated design has been uploaded to his GitHub. Unfortunately the kits sold by J&T Studios most likely have the issue with the link port. I recommend that you do not purchase the kit unless you do not plan to use the link port. Huge thank you to consolesandcasks for bringing this to my attention 👍 Cheers!
Thank you for the update! I hope J&T updates their kits as soon as they can, seems like a headache.
I think more rechargeable mod like new Gameboy is a must saving many people buying batteries. How difficult is this?
I ordered the kit pretty much immediately after watching the video so hopefully they run out and have to make some more using the v1.9 pcb.
Didn't see this comment until after ordering. Where might one find the info for which traces are incorrect? Should be able to cut and reroute the traces with some thin guage enameled wire
If only we can duplicate the chips
Hi Tito! Thank you so much for the shout out and for making these incredible videos. The mod community is unquestionably a brighter, better place with you in it. :)
No doubt. His vids are clean, clear, and easy to follow.
Are physical copies of Raven’s Core still available somewhere? Google was no help.
Thank you Blaine! Your videos have been an immense help homebrewing my handhelds over the years.
Hey blaine! I love your stuff, great to see you over here! big fan thanks for your content
Was so excited to hear you mentioned. Thanks so much Blaine!
I always love watching Titos soldering skills at work. Makes it look so easy.
Yeah -- that was clean AF
i think the Nintendo Splash Screen makes the OG Gameboy nostalgic and the sound that it makes it brings me back to my childhood days.
Morning coffee and Tito. Awesome!
Amen!
This is amazing! Great job as always Tito. Love to see these new handheld mods.
Always thankful for these videos. It gives me ideas about what I want to do with my own systems. Keep up the amazing work and thanks again.
Tito, I love you man!!! 😁 Never stops surprising us. Tjis is another example of the great things people can achieve when working together. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to bring this project a reality.
Also, I truly recommend Blaine's channel. I've been following for a few years and never dissapoints. His tutorials and his own creted games are awesome. Good to see him here too. Man, so proud of you all united. 😇
That's a great mod but I feel they could utilize a little more of the super gameboy cart like the color pallets.
omg the way you savage the components is awesome. great job man, this game boy looks beautiful
How on EARTH have I not seen your channel until now?
Wonderful production quality, Giving credit to others, awesome technical work, just WOW.
I hope you do very well, good content.
Its really cool to see what people can do with hardware, ive recently subscribed and loving the content. Have a happy new year!
Simply outstanding kit. Also, great videography and narration as always. Happy Thanksgiving Tito.
Hey! I've made this before you, Tito! (Since September 16th) It was my first time to solder with a hot air station, with every single component for the board, and I did it! The new motherboard is an excellent upgrade for the DMG!
Cool review of the Super DMG, Tito! Keep it up! 🤘
Yet another astonishingly beautiful piece of work, Tito. Hats off!
Good video, impressive soldering skills :) the only thing thats hurting my OCD is the white border to the right of the screen and at the bottom.
You're Videos are just so clean. Again, awesome video 👌
I remember you saying that this is not your primary job. It's really to believe seeing the quality of video's you provide. What is your main occupation? Are you a programmer, IT tech, or what? I been curious for some time now. Again love your videos, I always try to watch them as soon as they come out! Keep up the great work!
This is an awesome project! I hope that stuff like this brings attention to one of the last pieces that need to be reverse engineered: The DMG CPU Chip. There are a couple github projects doing it, with one I believe in the final stages. After that it's just getting dies made and turned into actual chips! Super cool stuff!
Hey Tito! Another great video in the bag. I have one small critique on your soldering of the chip. You should tin the pads prior to setting the chip on the board to create stronger connections from the board to the legs of the chip.
Just like with the Game Gear, I'm really stoked that people are making new boards for these projects. Fingers crossed that someone out there is working on a motherboard that will integrate the Sega Genesis and 32X into one to make a Sega Neptune. If it hasn't already been done.
A neptune board would be absolutely incredible. But I have a feeling we may be seeing something about the Neptune soon 😉
I think someone has taken a 32X and combined it with a model 2.
@@Ness_and_Sonic I've definitely seen people do a Frankenstein's monster version of it. But my hope is for some smart and handsome engineer people figure out how to make a board that you can use the chipset from both onto one with a modern power adaptor solution and work it all together. If something like that exists, that'd be sweet. Although I guess you'd also need to make sure it has a connector slot for the Sega CD as well. No idea if any of that's even possible, but these awesome people are doing incredible things all the time.
I wish the Atari Lynx had new boards too....
The Sega GameGear was such a cool device but not being able to play it without cable made it terrible, well you could but as a young kid I couldn't spend my little money on expensive batteries, and the games I had were trash as well :( I even didn't like Sonic because I never could make it past the third level or so, neither could my sister and a friend, Sonic was trash as well compared to Super Mario.
I don't plan nor have the funds to do any of these projects In the near future but I sure enjoy watching you do them. Unlocked a new Tism I didn't knew I had.
You did it again Tito! Great job! I can't wait until we are building new PC Engine GTs/Turbo Expresses with Cosam's PCB and old PC Engine chips!
Con, the price tag, $80 just for the board is a LOT. Then you need the screen, shell and donor. Preservation is cool but a working stock DMG is like $60
This honestly brings in a lot of exciting prospects that from what I see will help retro gaming in all avenues seeing this stuff expand! It might not be too crazy that in the future you can just build your own retro console to play on with it being purely hardware.
Another amazing video! Thanks Tito!
I’m curious about the spot on the pcb labeled “for stock audio amp only”.
fantastic job of soldering tito!!!!!
Great video as always
So sick! May have to give one of these a go. 😎
Something abt your vids just seem so high quality. Like a luxury product or something. Can't really put my finger on it, but you're doing something right that other tubers seem to miss.
Absolutely stunning mod here! This feels like the natural progression of the GB DMG! I cannot wait to try it myself one day.
your snes looks cool and i also liked the gc nano
Like your tweezers any make and model ? Also Awesome video once again. Too bad we can't just buy the cpu's like we do for PC's, Probably only built for the Game Boy, closed source.
It's so cool to see these DIY retro consoles, i makes me wonder if we'll ever (or rather, when) be able to "print" the CPU's too
FPGA 👍 Once prices go down it should be feasible
@@kaipographyyeah but FPGA would just be simulating the original CPU. It would be fantastic if we could make an actual clone
i think is in the "possible but not exactly legal" territory still
FPGA is the future. I’m sure we’ll be seeing it soon!
I'm really looking forward to the time when FPGAs as capable as the DE-10 Nano are $50 a pop.
Hey Tito - just a small warning with this - there is an error in Kamicane's routing of the DMG link port that is present in the board that's available for purchase in your link (as well as Kamicane's main branch v1.8 and earlier, new update today should fix it). This issue will blow fuses if you link it with another game boy.
Additionally, I would only recommend using a power board that's specifically been recommended by Kamicane without running/seeing full scope analysis of this board - so either an OEM board or Bucket Mouse's DMGC power board. IPS kits don't need the -18v rail, so there really shouldn't be one on the power board unless you're planning on using an original front board and screen.
Hey thanks for the heads up! Is this documented anywhere so that I can post a pinned comment and put in the video description for folks to reference?
@@MachoNachoProductions unfortunately the only place it's documented is a small note in my Github for my fork that uses a Game Boy Pocket CPU - and in a conversation a few of us had in the Game Boy discord. Someone blew a fuse on their board trying to test it, and then we investigated the issue. I inadvertently fixed it in my MGB rerouted board already, so I made a tweak for my personal Super DMG (and posted gerbers for that)
Btw. why do we need the 'power board'? or what is is? it converts electricity from 4*1.5V to like 5V?
@@barnahalo6916 Yes - the DMG has 4 circuit boards that are wired together: the front board which has the controls and screen, the audio board which has the headphone jack, the power board which takes battery input and converts it to a steady 5v (and -18v for the original screen) the CPU board which has the CPU and most of the other components. The Super DMG just consists of the Audio and CPU boards, you need either and original or IPS replacement for the front board, and an original or replacement for the power board as well (I'd recommend the power board that is used for Bucket Mouse's DMG Color - which Tito showcased the entire build for around this time last year)
@@ConsolesAndCasks Thank you for the clarification. Im not really into the original Gameboy, but my friend had a GBC back when we were kids, I loved that one. Last year I've bought a PSP2000, and I think, that this handheld console is the best in every aspect. I want a PSP go now, because the Bluetooth, so I can use my Galaxy Buds to play. 😁 Retro gaming is quite a rabbit hole. I still have my old Pentium 3-4 Computers, sadly the older ones from my childhood were thrown away, and got lost. :(
Muito legal este projeto Tito. Congrats man!!
Great build man! Is there a color option for this build? That would be awesome….
This is a brilliant kit. Definitely feel a broken Super GameBoy 2 is the best donor as it has both the CPU and the link port.
And the clock speed of the SGB2 matches exactly with the DMG01.
I love your Mod videos. I grow up with this Game consoles
Love your channel dude!!, Is there a way to jailbreak the Sega Mini 2?
I don't know if it's the blue shell and brownish PCB combo, plust the very small amount of components, but disassembled this build looks like a piece of 70s' tech! Like an Atari or similar.
I might pick one up, it's very nice.
Great vid as always.
This video made me really happy. Not only I found out old GameBoys can be revived, but there are heroes out there CREATING new games for it too!
I was expecting you to say that the only CON was that it requires soldering that's at a bit of an advanced level (unless you buy the full kit, I THINK you said it comes with the CPU already installed)
but yea, other than a bit of tiny soldering I don't see any cons either - AMAZING PRODUCT!!!!! THANKS TITO!
full kit does not come with donor cpu or case, nothing ever comes with a donor cpu
Yeah soldering is the negative. Finding someone to do it for you if you lack confidence isn't going to be easy either.
@Concreteowl Just get a practice kit, knowing how to solder is extremely useful not just for stuff like this but fixing other things all around the house.
People now days seem to think stuff like this is hard and scary... it's really not.
Great video!
That's really cool, I just think that loosing the Nintendo startup logo removes some of the authenticity. Not to mention I think I'd rather harvest it from a broken DMG than the super Gameboy as I think those are rarer. Also, I don't mind waiting a few seconds to play.
I often have to wait 40 minutes for console and game updates on modern consoles as I don't play often haha
The og gameboy put out some really crisp sound though. That's impressive
Great content. Surprised the battery was not modded.
Hey Tito, love the new video! Makes me wanna make one even though I have no use for it lolol also what is the game at 11:46 ?
I love projects that preserve original hardware as much as possible. Great video.
it's literally just the CPU that's preserved
Saw your 3D printed Ashiida! Do you plan on doing a video on that project soon?
Love it!!! Another great video!!! 😀
Glad you enjoyed it!!
This reminds me of SYF board for the Game Gear aswell as the FunnyPlaying GBA board. Awesome piece of kit. Surprised it never came earlier. Overall replacement PCB’s are becoming quite common with the DIY/Modding community.
When the time comes i will replace the motherboard, however i wonder are there new cpu chips and gpu chips? I,m some what new to modding. But for now my og dmg is still holding up so well i restored it to new( cosmaticly amd technical working, i love it !) Awsome upload like always :)
Tito your video are perfect, you deserve million of views! Ciao!
Thank you for your video 🥰
Instead of soldering in each pin individually you can just apply a lot of solder to the pins at once (with a lot of flux pre-applied) and just scrape it back and forth (lightly) across all the pins in a sweeping motion
At first I thought this made little sense, until you mentioned preservation...it always makes sense, in that case 🎮
Looks like a good thing, my concern is the price especially when you include the new display and everything else. What was the total cost? apologies if i missed it in the video.
Man, it'd be rad as hell if there was a way to take advantage of the super Gameboys color palette features. I imagine none of that is handled by the dmg CPU tho, so that won't likely happen lol
Great video!
Have you seen the VIS_Game_Boy_DMG? I'm debating between this mod and the VIS. The VIS has a lot of mods integrated such as a li-ion charger, leds and clicky buttons. For me it would make more sense to also include upgrades when making a new board. But on the other hand the Super DMG is simpler to make and stays true to the original DMG.
This is fascinating!
That's a really cool mod! Do they have a similar project for a gameboy color? (I couldn't find it)
I would like to see a project one of these days that does something like this but also gives you the Super Game Boy color palettes. I am kinda curious if they is possible outside of just straight-up making a portable SNES.
Don't forget the extra sounds and other features the SGB utilized that some titles offered. Now that would be epic.
sadly you either need the SNES hardware or emulation
Where did the cons go? We just got an explanation of the product.
A small but important note on building a dmg, make sure the d-pad is completely round. If it has that mold point in the corner, it does affect d-pad performance. I know Gameboy Advance D pads have the same mold point but it doesn't affect the GBA. The Prestige buttons are very good
Good to know, thanks!
@@MachoNachoProductions you're welcome. I built a DMG a few months ago and the missing bit for the mold point made it want to go left or right when I was pushing down. It was especially noticeable playing Tetris
@@MachoNachoProductionsI know this is kind of a silly question but does this need the super Game Boy CPU or will a regular Game Boy CPU work?
@@MachoNachoProductionsnever mind, I just re-watched the video and you answer my question there
Great job !! I hope some will be doing this to the xbox og❤
I love your intro bro! 💪💪🔥🔥
What's with the bezels on the screen? Bad alignment, or it's just how it is? Had one DMG as a kid but can't really remember :D
Great content as always !
You're pretty darn awesome! What happens if you wire the speaker to the front board?
Glad to see these GB mods still alive and well even with the release of the Analogue Pocket which you’d think would kill these incredible mods
I am sad about the backlight mods having died out because of the ips kits...
Analogue Pocket is too overpriced to kill mods to real systems.
@@brandoggalso very limited stock. If you don't immediately jump on a new release, you ain't getting one.
Yeah they're never in stock long enough to disrupt the market lol
Analogue pockets are great. All in one solution.
But, the process of modding n putting together oem modded hardware is such a great experience. IMO the modding process beats the over all result.
This is definitely one of the coolest projects of the year. Who'd have thought that those cheap super gameboys would have so much utility.
I don't mind the splash screen. But this build is Awesome. 😎👍💯
This is so awesome!
This is awesome, I love it!
But I have a "con" for you and it is the CPU soldering, I will screw the whole thing in the first minute. I can solder the other stuff but those close pins? bufff.. (also I don't have the cool hot blower)
Is there a way to get the kit with the CPU already in place?
This is a serious question, I am buying
This is cool. Would gameboy color games work with this?
Hi Tito I love your videos watch them all the time they help me learn lots however I'm very curious do you know if the Game Boy Pocket CPU is usable in this mod? I have been looking online everywhere for information to compare with but I can't find anything
Hmm. I do have a Super GB I don’t plan on using. It’s very nice that we have a new motherboard, kinda like how FunnyPlaying made their own GBA motherboards & as well their new FPGA based GBC console (I hope you end up reviewing that!) which is insane to think about. And apparently, GameBox is planning on consolizing the 3DS, NDS, & PSP? It is insane how much love these handhelds have been getting from the modding & retro community as a whole, it’s beautiful.
Now that is impressive….I might actually have to try this.
Lovely stuff, nice custom SNES aswell!
The custome SNES is amazing 😁
That kinds of loudness is completely necessary for our Whoopee Cushion ROM.
It'd be even more awesome if somebody could combine the Super Gameboy and the Gameboy Color, perhaps with a custom BIOS or something
Tito, I painstakingly recreated the DMG OEM PCBs. I’ve shared gerber files on my dmg reboot repo on gh. I am not selling anything, I‘m just supporting the community.
honestly while hats off to the guys that made a modern repo PCB for the DMG, its been done many times before, and to use the superDMG cpu one would expect some of the added features of that CPU be be in use, like the expanded snes color pallet. but again defs hats of the the devs for doing the work on the pcb. most of the older repo boards unfortunately havent been release as open source. mine certainly wasnt lol
This is so SICK! 🥳🥳
Awesome video.
It seems great Tito!
I’m not a super big fan of the OG Game Boy but this project is pretty cool and so are all the other projects for retro and modern vintage systems. It really is Amazing what the communities have accomplished and made avaliable to the general public.
Thats a dope shell, is that an ABS mold?
It is!
notable!!!! me encantan estos videos!!!!
How about the slight OC that the cpu provides making games run a bit faster. People used to do speed runs of GB games but have a advantage by using the Super game boy cart.
Great project! Almost identical to the one I did back in March…hmmm
Hello Tito and the rest of the community - Thanks for the video! After I watched it, I ordered and installed that set too. I understood now, that the link port shouldnt be used, correct?
But I have another problem, as recommended in the video I used a Super Gameboy Chip for that mod but the boot takes ages, once the device is booted the "Nintendo" logo disappears quickly and the GameBoy runns normal. Any idea what I might have done wrong? I reached out to the JT-Studios but do not get a reply. Thanks for your help and looking forward for your next video! Regards from Germany
Goodness I wish I had your soldering skills.
would it be possible to manufacture the cpu as well?
great video!
Final Fantasy Adventure was my favorite game on the system. Great video and content as always!
Will you do a battery mod in future to add a rechargeable battery?
all that to still slap some batteries in it. im in love
I'm wondering if with this mode Game Link Cable connector is usable, I'm wondering if it is still there, as I'm not sure, other than that I don't see any other cons. Great work!!!
Super clean build
Need to find a project for my Nintendo ds Lite and SP gameboy advanced! This is awesome.
