Been following Henry Rollins since he was the vocalist for Black Flag. This guy is the workingman's intellectual. When I was a teenager "Six Pack" spoke right to me...now as an adult his words are just as meaningful.
Well said, Henry. The problem is that there is no accountability. Do folks really believe that these public servants really consider themselves as such? They don't. They believe that they are above everyone, and there are laws to attest to that.
The subtitles were wrong at times. When Henry said, "I think CNN was complicit.", the subtitles said, "I think CNN was complacent." Big difference in meaning.
"Colin powell owes me an apology because he lied to my face. He looked right into the camera and lied" YES! Now whether he knew he was lying, or if he was "mis-informed" does not change the fact that he lied to every single American, and everyone else around the world that bothered to listen to him. He owes all of us an apology, but he is far from the only one, especially from the administration he served. Thank you, Mr. Rollins!!!
Rollins should continue doing these little Q&A videos... i would be interested to see his view on certain topics such as these. Hes well spoken, articulate and most of all inspiring ... keep up the good work bigthink/ Henry Rollins
I liked that you commented on his library comment - don't let a carelessly made incorrect comment, even a tiny one, slide. Rollins should know better than to diss libraries, and I think he'd agree and correct himself; libraries are still important.
Because they are really good at pointing out easier targets for us to focus on elsewhere...and because 'they are helping us' we don't look too closely at them...
“If some fanatic bishop, king or priest somehow justified death for their greedy desires to gain fortune or godhood or whatever they wanted, then it's their problems.” Actually, it’s the problem of the people who die as a result of it. The individual who gains fortune or godhood from interpreting a certain scripture a certain way is certainly not having a problem.
I agree I think what he meant was you don't need to flick through a million books to find out something in particular, going through every word until you come upon the ones that seem to fit your question. You can specifically type into google (or something of the like) what you want for example and it will come up for you in an instant.
'Oh, you mean the one under the rule of a tyrannical dictator' Yeah, that one. I dont dispute Saddamn being a tyrant. I do find questionable going after him, when we're going after the perps of 9/11, which his regime had nothing to do with. 'Just because no WMDs were found at the time, doesn't mean we weren't in the right for going there.' When WMDs were the case presented for doing so, yeah it patently means we weren't in the right.

there's something about Mr.Rollins, Jobs had it too, natural leaders. It's a pity Mr.Rollins can't be put in a position where he can make mass change, and I respect that he does what he can with what he has at his disposal.
That's probably the exact thing about it dude. The Higgs-Boson was just discovered, so it's probably exceptionally hard for just a TH-cam channel like 'Bigthink' to get a hold of such an amazing and intelligent person.
Same here. I think it's because their professions and experiences have empowered them with the speaking skills and charisma needed to catch a viewer, and thinker's, attention. They can share their views and opinions and thoughts all while making the videos interesting to watch. They can morph their videos into a show of thoughts instead of a basic lecture.
You should also see his shows when he comes to a major city near you. It's this stuff for 3 straight hours. I've had a little piece of intelligent and funny heaven the last 6 times he's been in town. He's got a hell of a lot of good angles on a really varied amount of topics.
Kudos Henry. Though I'd respectfully ask you to reconsider identifying yourself as a consumer. You might want to identify yourself as a citizen. Citizens have rights and responsibilities, consumers are a herd.
"traded truth for access". Yes. This is how the world works. You trade what you have for what you need. A profitable network would rarely commit suicide in order to tell people the "truth". And this doesn't make them "cowards" either. You would do this yourself if it benefited you more. Like you wouldn't just give a piece of your liver to someone unless you got something out of it. Same goes with charity. NO one just gives unconditionally. Everything we do is based on incentives.
I believe he points Colin Powell out because he is a man of integrity and of higher morals and values than was seen throughout that administration - or for many administrations. Cheney-Rumsfeld did not do him any favors putting him in such a position and I remember thinking to myself 'what is he going to do? I couldn't see him falling in line' but I remember distinctly & thought it was his oath to country to back up the administration's claims on Iraq WMDs & Al Queda ties. His pain was evident
As an American, I don't think patriotism is ridiculous. I do think too many have tried to co-opt the word to mean loyalty to a party, or loyalty to a man, when what it means, in my interpretation, is that I'm loyal to the country. It doesn't mean America, Love It or Leave It. It Means America, Love It, Fix It. It means there is an ideal of freedom and equality to strive for, no matter how many bigots and opportunists try to usurp the power structure for their own ends.
Go alone if you have to. I have a few of his books as well but it's almost all "Spoken Word" stuff aside from his famous Get In The Van journal, which I haven't read. I would recommend his most recent books and working your way back. He's a lot more articulate now than he ever was even if Hank fans like his earliest stuff the most IMO. Make sure to buy something at his booth if you do see a live show. It's how the guy eats ;)
It's all about interpretation. Some interpret the best, others choose the worst parts just so they can validate their hate and scorn as being rightfully placed. That's the most simplistic form of it, it's like telling a child not to eat sweets or worms are going to start growing inside. But it's also a protection mechanism for the people, telling all the people that don't want to understand God that they will suffer if they do bad things to others, if love can't save them, maybe fear will.
I like Rollins a lot. And I agree with much of what he says about the media. One thing I disagree on is that non-transparency in the news media is something new. Or at least that's the impression I think he is giving here. The news media has never been transparent and will never be. Apart from a few publications (Private Eye in the UK for example), every news channel or publication filters the information that they have to serve their own agenda - this is Media Studies 101, which we all should know. The difference that 'social media' has made--is making--in the news media sphere is that we are getting raw 'news', unfiltered. This is problematic because it highlights the instability and chaotic nature of the world in which we live - it has always been like this. Now we get to see the chaos of the world unedited, unfiltered, directly to our devices and that's scary. It also makes it more difficult, if not impossible, for us to make sense of what is going on in the world. And when truth-seeking journalist try to get to the truth, often an ugly truth for governments, they are portrayed as trying to undermine those governments and their foreign policy agendas. So raw news is demonised as somehow unpatriotic or even terrorist in its motives, as Trump likes to do -- ‘fake’ news has become a catch-all for unpalatable or embarrassing information, but can equally be applied to the propaganda disseminated from government media and comms departments. Where does that leave us? In a kind of news ‘non-space’ -- a soup of truth/fiction that nobody likes. The solution? Who knows. One thing is clear: social media just thickens the soup. My advice is to not use Twitter or FB or any of the online surveillance mechanisms. And that’s what they are, forms of surveillance, whether it’s Zuckerberg-style fascists, governments, serious news journalists or you. We’re all watching each other. Orwell said: the perfect police state requires no police. If we are not careful we will all be ‘informing’ on each other -- government and individual: Log off, tune out and look up.
Just remember that this isn't a partisan issue. From Ron Reagan to the current President there are people out there doing horrible things for "the greater good". I don't care who becomes President they become disciples of Machiavelli eventually and it's freaking scary stuff. Iraq was a hard thing for me because I joined the Army as Country loving American but by the time I went to Iraq my perception changed to that of a humanity loving American. It was a really tough time.
Sad thing about this is, Colin Powell did say that what he did was wrong. Long after thr events but he did openly say that he regretted his statements about Iraq.
301/302 is the figure TH-cam allows a video to get to before it reconciles/synchronises its worldwide servers to ensure there are no bots getting views or anything overly infringing on copyright/decency :)
"The supreme irony of the information age, is that it gives new respectability to the uninformed opinion" - Michael Chrichton. How Chrichton used references and quotes in his works lends great irony to that statement ...
"Presidents have very little authority"? Have you not heard of Presidential Veto? The manufacturer of a gun is unimportant; who uses a gun to murder is. The question is not personal (liking, or not). The question is: Can any president order the murder of any one, any where? Thomas Chalkley described you when he wrote: "There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who chose to ignore what they already know." --R.T. Thomes (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Michio Kaku is a scientific spokesman at best, regurgitating the hard work and research of others. However he is an educator, so you cannot begrudge him for him, like Neil Degrasse Tyson, and educating the masses (no pun) is worthwhile. I will agree however that you are absolutely correct when you say nobody knows what it is. Scientists are trying to explain with analogies of drag, but are failing miserably at explaining the finer details, because they themselves, dont know yet.
OMG this guy hits the nail right on the head! Not too long ago I was pretty young naive and idealistic.. always going to be naive at least to some degree but towards the last half of the Bush administration I gave them so much benefit of the doubt, because he was my president and "we're the good guys".. so I would look the other way under the guise that whatever they were doing behind the curtains was for the greater good. It is utterly defeating to pull that curtain back & find petty corruption
Rollins is a moral compass. I respect him. I simply ask in 100 years will Iraq be better for all the misinformation and carnage. I care about the future. Atrocities are commonplace in history. Many people have lied throughout history. Some of those lies end up being fortuitous. Time will tell. In 1950 congressional reports said Japan may never embrace the democracy we had imposed on them. Time is, as they say in the dicey parts of town, cray. Still, Henry, I love you.
While libraries most certainly DO, I think the point he's trying to make is that we're kind of at the point where there are far more Wi-Fi Hotspots then there are libraries now.
A school friend of mine got murdered outside Baghdad Museum when he was freelancing during the Iraq War when he was trying to find stories the media weren't telling

I love youtube, it's the first the time little man actually has control... on what is broadcasted.. on a worldwide scale...this shit...is the beginning. and this video paints the perfect picture of the dawn of the end of corruption...if the people wake up, it's not about intelligence, it's about actions and intentions.
I just reread the posts. Turns out I was not replying to you, but to UnitsHell. Maybe you missed that. I've done the same thing myself, especially when it is past my bedtime. Cheers!
Hahahaha I like how as the video progressed he went into a tangent about hoist personal view about the media. However I respect this man and I share his views proudly
If I tell you: 'The key to your peace is to eliminate all sin.' What do you think it means? You might understand that to make peace on Earth you have to kill every person you think is a sinner. But what I'm really trying to tell you is that the key to 'YOUR PEACE' is to eliminate all sin from YOURSELF. You see? This is the problem, sometimes, priests twist the truth to fit their needs. The massage is the same but people twist it to fool the minds of people who don't know the real meaning.
I have mixed feelings. Technology has progressed at such a speed the world is barely keeping up. On a small scale, officers withhold information to avoid a loss in morale and panic, but this requires trust. The truth is the public doesn't need to know every lurid detail. We lack understanding, empathy, and mental cogency. America is an opiated society w/ shallow values. We need leaders that we can trust to act in our best interest, but our apathy and shallow values lead us to misrepresentation
I like Henry Rollins, he seemingly has a healthy disdain of lying & cowardice, and how, when employed together, have a significantly, detrimentally, negative affect on the well being of others, how this is a heinous social crime and it's need of being abstained, and in so doing one may successfully negate having 'A Low Self Opinion' 😎
ok, I get your point now. I take it back, you're right. took me a while to put things in context... but then I live really far away from the US. (what cheese sandwichs?)
That's his opinion and his point of view. He has not to proof everything, it's just opinions shared and these opinions come not only from him but more from other people behaving to him, others, the world.... His reaction and words are fully legal. In any case more legal than politics lying to the world.
I love BigThink when they have scientists or academics explain interesting concepts. I am less interested in the opinions of celebrities, even very smart and articulate ones. Knowledge is hard to find. Opinions are easy to come by. For evidence of this, see the Internet.
Thank you, you can post it on facebook if you like. If a discussion arises around it I'd be glad to join in if I can. I don't want to take too much credit, though. he is telling the truth but seeing him I still hear: "Cause I am a liar!! YEAH!!! I like it! I feel good!!!" one of the best songs of the 90-ties
That old saying.."The first casualty of war is the truth".
A word to Mr.Henry Rollins, you know that you can be the President of the United States ?
he's too honest
He did a video on that subject on this channel.
The subtitles were wrong at times. When Henry said, "I think CNN was complicit.", the subtitles said, "I think CNN was complacent." Big difference in meaning.

I found it odd for Henry Rollins to be on Big Think, but he's been very well spoken and lucid.

This worked well as a prologue for The Newsroom.
Thanks, I'll give it a go.
Love you ,Henry rollins..thanks
He is amazing...
Rollins should be our president
I'd vote for him
ok, I get your point now. I take it back, you're right.
took me a while to put things in context... but then I live really far away from the US. (what cheese sandwichs?)
Just because someone is elected do not mean they have the right to do whatever they want and covering up half of it.
The truth. All these years have passed but still the Truth
I do too. Who are you referring to exactly?
well... he is not a coward indeed!
Henry Rollins for president!
Its kind of hard when the 'other side' is as crazy as it is right now.
Thank you, you can post it on facebook if you like. If a discussion arises around it I'd be glad to join in if I can. I don't want to take too much credit, though. The train of thought i presented is inspired mainly by Richard Dawkins and Penn Jillette. Also comment space only allowed me to develop my thoughts so far.
The passage to which I'm referring: Deutoronomy 13:6 - 13:10.
