    As previously stated, Henry Rollins would make a perfect guidance councilor. This guy has real perspective and lived wisdom. You can see the blood, sweat and tears etched into this guys face. I for one am listening to what he has to say.

    I grew up rich, but with abusive parents who hit me and yelled at me and sabotaged my efforts at independence, and mocked me and ridiculed me every moment they could, and told me, "you made me do this because you don't respect me enough," touched me inappropriately and told me, "Stop fighting and just go with it," because it made them feel in control. Rich does not always equal better off. They made life not worth living.

      Henry Rollins speaks for you too, if you’re suffering you’re also at a disadvantage. Being rich is just one part of the narrative…. You sent this 10 years ago but I hope things are better now.

    This is just what I needed to hear! I have worked a full time job and taken an almost full curriculum of classes for 3 years. I'm halfway done my degree. thank you so much for posting this. It's hard to keep on going and I will because of the people in my life and videos like these.

    I never considered Henry a second class person, ever. I know his music since the 80s, he always stood for the total winner for all of us in Germany. Everybody I knew adored him and wished to be as driven, dedicated and courageous as he has always been. People who think they have one up on others because of wealth have their heads up their asses. True wealth is within us.

  • @jeminiverse
    @jeminiverse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I see so much of myself in him. people listen selectively to things that interest them. Even though I came from an upper middle class family, Henry Rollins' mentalities and insights inspire me to work harder and work my ass off to an almost insanity-fueled drive. If you want to achieve something, you can do it, but you have to put in the fucking work to earn your achievements.

  • @Animuldok
    @Animuldok 12 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I had a sensei that once told the class... "You will only be able to reach your potential once you understand your limitations." very philosophical, but quite true. It is similar to: "A smart man knows a lot, a wise man knows what he doesn't know."

    I never knew Henry Rollins other than some guy in music videos back in the 90s. This is great. In all seriousness I am obsessively going to live and work, without working for the man until I'm rich. Thank you for the inspiration, both Henry and Big Think.

    This is such an inspiring piece of advice that Henry Rollins delivers. I know all to well because I have been there and know exactly what he is talking about...
    This will be the most important speech that I will ever have to deliver to my offspring. it will also be one of the most difficult speeches to make for them.

    The fact that 121 people disliked this video proves to me yet again that with every intelligent, logical, positive thought, there are always 1 or 2 people who are like "fuck this" because they just simply do. not. think.

      chriscauldemusic Or is it because they realise , that all advise is useless ?
      You know I have met in my life hundreds of people who think advice given by older successful people has a value, it does not, it's biblical shit . Shakespeare tried to point this out in a scene in Hamlet , but thousands of people take it serious , even some actors , well he was joking extracting the old urine .
      And trying to point out that we are all victims of circumstance . { That is not advice it is a fact}

    • @sbsbsb69
      @sbsbsb69 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roland Hawken I've been a fan of Rollins since his Black Flag days and because I see him as a role model of mine I find his advice inspiring. I don't consider myself a victim of circumstance so much as a fluid being with some choice in how I interpret my world and myself. Also sorry to say that stating something is a fact certainly does not make it so.

    If he had a child he probably wouldn't be where he is today, 275 thousand people wouldn't have watched and learned something.
    Being childless or having children both come at a sacrifice.

    • @MichaelWaisJr
      @MichaelWaisJr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, not really. The problem is a lot of people aren’t honest with themselves about being ready to parent. When I was in my mid-20s I was lucky enough to be honest with myself that I wasn’t emotionally/psychologically/financially ready, and that’s why I chose to have an abortion with an ex because I didn’t want to ruin a kid’s life because I sincerely wasn’t ready to be a parent. Now I’m 41 years old and I like to think that maybe in the coming few years that opportunity might present itself to me. I feel a lot more ready now. Personally I believe that parents should be licensed and take something like a written DMV driver’s license exam to be parents. The problem is too many people who become parents don’t know that to be good parents they sometimes have to make sacrifices and COMPROMISE! Everybody has to compromise: Go get a boyfriend/girlfriend and ONLY do with them stuff you wanna do. Sorry that’s not gonna last long…. Think about Jeff Bezos who felt “Sure I can exploit all these Amazon warehouse workers and delivery drivers!” Well, karma came back to him. Now he realizes he has to make compromises when workers are talking about inhumane conditions and unionizing. … Parents have to compromise so their kids can be happy and healthy. So, it’s not very black and white like that. There are just a lot of people out there who have problems they haven’t worked out and pass down their struggles on their kids.

    Looking back at my relatively short life here (25yrs), there were times when I lasered my thoughts and life around a goal that seemed unattainable, but I felt that it would work out in my favor, and a lot of times it did as a result of tenacity. Sometimes, you've just got to be dead focused on what's ahead instead of sitting around and licking your wounds. Otherwise, you'll miss the wide open windows that allow you to be one step closer to your goals.

    There are people who have an absence of personality, responsibility, and character due to wealth. There are those who have the same from poverty, entitlement works best at the extremes. We have removed the courses that should be mandatory in schools, arts/music, woodworking, auto shop, etc. were all the courses that removed entitlement. Bring them back.

    • @JapanJohnny2012
      @JapanJohnny2012 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +steven martin That's a very interesting point, as within my close circle at university, I was from the most ordinary economic background, and most of my friends were paid through college whereas I was on a scholarship. My friends virtually all worked harder than me, and got better grades (I did OK but not as well as them) because they all had potentially irate parents to answer to, if they screwed up, whereas I didn't. So it's not quite as simple as Henry, who didn't finish college, btw, likes to make it sound, as you point out.

    Keeping working hard and doing what you know it takes to be successful. The reason people hate on you, is because your example holds up a mirror to their mediocrity. To be at the top of your field, any field takes a tremendous amount of effort, work and hustle which the average person does not have. They tell you, your success was from talent only, is the way they give their selves a pass for not working as hard as they can to be better.

    In this country if you want to live a different life and think for yourself you got 2 choices a) self-employment b) hope your parents have a good inherintance in place. Cause if not your fucked. Plain and simple. Had a cop I was cool with once tell me this is probably one the worst countries to live in if you have a mind of your own unless you go your own way. Plain and simple. Doesn't matter how hard you work if you have a mind of your own, guarranted you will be fired a lot in life regardless of work ethic.

    And you can take that to the bank. This intelligent man, has done a whole lot, from not only singer and actor, but stand up comic too (and quite funny). He's been to North Korea and got out by the skin of his teeth, he's been Journalist, Author, you name it. He's done so much. He easily has the wisdom and experience of at least two people, if not more. Sharp as a razor he is. By his own humble admission though, he's not a genius and struggles in certain areas.
    It reminds me of something humble my own mother said. When in my 30's or so (so not some child), I said to her "You are really intellgient mom and that's not just because you are my mom." (she was a school Teacher and of severely handicapped children later in her career) so yeah, she's no slouch. And her answer after thanking me for the compliment was "Well, I seem a lot smarter than I actually am. I'm pretty average really. It was my tenacity and passion that made me smarter. And some skill with language, I could B.S. people into thinking I was smarter than I was. B.S. baffles brains, as they say." lol. Most epic and honest response you could ever expect from your mother really. Henry is right, it's not just about brains, it's about hard work.

    I have suffered, I have struggled, I have lost everyone I have ever cared about. I live in constant pain.
    Despite these emotional and physical struggles I am still alive. I still fight. If anything, the event that made me grow up practically overnight has made it so I can endure anything. Nothing else could put me into a state of shock. No ones anger, malice or destructive nature can touch me or even phase me. I am better for my torment and growing ever stronger from it.

    As a 40 year old man who grew up with very little male influence in my life I often joked and said Henry Rollins was my father.
    He gave me a education, taught me about respect in myself, and others, stick up for what I believe in, help those that don't have the means to fight for themselves, increase my vocabulary, trive to better myself, know who I am, what I am worth, and not to settle for less.
    These are things I do my best to pass on to my kids, and that I share with my lovely lady.
    If I was yo ever meet Henry I will tell him all of this, and say thank you ... Dad.

    "Sweating your guts out" on something that isn't going to bring you to your goal, doesn't mean you'll reach your goal. Its not just about working hard, but working hard effectively. But people who don't succeed is primarily those who don't want to work hard, allow set backs to discourage them and/or aren't using their energy effectively. Through my personal experience and those I've known, hard work and tenacity always pays off

    I can totally relate and wish that I had the attitude I have now, when I was in my early 20's. I used to worry about everyone else, what they had, how they got it and why I didn't. I realized that the most important things are MY achievements and what they mean to ME. My family, my education and my leisure times and hobbies are what are the most important. I've made and will continue to make contributions to the world, regardless of John Doe and his wealth and power.

    Thank you for posting this! I have been in a bad spot in my life! His words makes me feel better and that I have hope from his words. I love Henry Rollens for his words! He never ever belittles the under man. He goes after the ones that hurt or harm others. He goes after the truly stupid people who should not have the things in their lives due to they did not work for them! I feel he has inspire my life to get an education even though I have ADHD and Dyslexia! I am so glad for these videos!

    How can you not like Henry Rollins? How can you not like someone who is so honest (notice I didn't say "right", he doesn't claim to be "right")? How can you not like someone who absent of bullshit, so devoid of the need for you to like him?

    Great message here. Stop worrying so much about people that were born into a better position in life than you were. Life’s not fair, and never will be. Instead of using all that energy complaining about your shortcomings in life because you werent dealt a good hand, use the energy to look at what your life is now, and what you can do to better it. Thats the approach I try to take anyway.

    i totally agree. the contributions and setting a bar for myself and being able to defend myself in conversation makes me smug. hate the winner from the bench

    It might be a bit cheesy but I found it inspirational. I am at a moment in live in which I want to make my own art but I see so many great art around me that I keep telling myself I will never make something original that people will like. But now I found that what I once forgot: it is possible it just takes a lot of work.

    This is so true. Well to do ppl tend to poke fun of ppl who speak and try to better themselves. It's usually exclusively those who come from bonafide middle class families and up. Self-made rich are hardly like this. Many of those love to teach others how to make it. Henry himself is a perfect example.

    This is truely one of the most motivational thing I have ever heard. Thank you. These day's there's a great sense of ennui today. How many times do people just feel happy to exist in "this economy?" Next time I need a pickup, I'm thinking of this. Thank you Henry Rollins.
