Prince William: DNA Test Proves Indian Heritage

- DNA testing has revealed Prince William will become Britain's first king to have proven Indian ancestry.
Genetic experts have found a direct lineage between the Duke of Cambridge and a part-Indian woman called Eliza Newark.
She was a housekeeper for his great-great-great-great-great grandfather Theodore Forbes, a Scottish merchant who worked for the East India Company in Surat, a port north of Bombay.
They had a daughter called Katherine - and it is through an unbroken maternal line to the prince's mother, Princess Diana, that the young royal and his brother Prince Harry have inherited the Indian DNA.
The research was carried out by BritainsDNA, a genetic ancestry testing company.
It showed the second in line to the throne was carrying Eliza's mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) - a small piece of DNA inherited mostly unchanged from a mother to her children.
Scientists said it was "very likely" that Prince William's heirs will also carry a small proportion of Indian DNA from Eliza, whose father may have been of Armenian descent.
Born in 1790, she lived in India when it was governed by the East India Company, and is thought to have had Armenian blood because of her surname.
Dr Jim Wilson, a genetics expert at the University of Edinburgh and chief scientist at BritainsDNA, said it was the fact that she was an Armenian living in Bombay that intrigued him.
He said: "I was wondering if it was possible she was Indian. What was an Armenian doing in Bombay? That's what got me interested."
Using birth, marriage and death records, he said researchers traced two of Eliza's living direct descendants, who are both third cousins of Princess Diana's mother, Frances Shand Kydd, and tested samples of their saliva
Using other genetic tests to corroborate the findings, they also discovered that the two direct descendants were around 0.3% and 0.8% South Asian. The rest of their DNA was of European origin.
"This was independent evidence that there was Indian ancestry," said Dr Wilson.
"For me, it corroborated the findings from the mtDNA. We've got two different kinds of genetic evidence that are independent from one another and they both corroborate the story.
"So it really seems that our future king has a little bit of Indian blood."
Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge are expecting the birth of their first child in July.

I wonder if this explains why nearly 10% of my genetic makeup on 23andme comes up as from the region of Caucasus, Anatolia and Mesapotamia. The rest is 90% North West Indian - specifically Punjab (0.5% traces back to Sardinia and I have 2% neanderthal DNA).
I did my DNA at 23andme, because I had a coupon from them, I was surprised to know that I have 6% British ancestry. I went on to do some research and concluded that something happened in first quarter of 1800s, because I meet a dead-end there, nobody knows the history (of our lineage) beyond that, and 23andme's predictions coincide with the date that I came-up with based on DoB of the know grandfathers.

all of my known recent ancestors come from Germany, England, and France. DNA test (i took 3!) said a good % is from South asia! on average 9% of my DNA is South Asian. we always assumed my great grandma was Native American based on phenotype but these DNA results point to a different line.

@@DanieGirl-tt9xc well when you take a dna test it aslo shows u relatives right, so look at your relatives to see if their names or other clues. but since gypsies came to germany/england/france in the 1400s and have been persecuted and killed and followed ever since, they dont have a lot of written documents or such.
(i know typical swedish gypsy names that a foreigner would never guess, they are common swedish surnames but mostly used by the roma who arrived in 1500s, so they are blonde and blue eyed today but still keep some culture and a scando dialect of romani and have been persecuted and forced sterilisations etc. but i dont know about german/french/england gypsy names. check out some documentaries and such, theres alot on brittish/irish gypsies on yt).

Please explain how they can go that far back? What test do they use? I have an Indian ancestor as well that goes to 5th great grandparent. It shows up as 3% on my 2nd cousin but none for me. So I didn't inherit that but my cousins did. It looks like Williams ancestry goes further back but still traceable. Strange how this works..
Mitochondrial DNA inherits from the Mothers side sometimes and not from the father's.
Dna is not inherited equally. You can get large blocks of dna 10 gens back and none from a third gen. It's always a shuffle.

There are many in the U.K., including aristocratic families with a small bit of Indian DNA. as a result of the East India Company’s occupation of much of India in the 18th and early 19th C. Mostly men who were there without their wives and who co-habited with local women. Many took up “wives” unknown to their families back home.
They would also properly intermarry with Indian families. Especially early on when there was no British women at all. Even if your parent is half german half spanish you might not necessarily be 25% of each. Theoretically you could only inherit 50% of the german or only 50% of the spanish. Considering the woman was not closely related to her, the likelyhood of her not inheriting the Armenian DNA is very high.
