  • This week I visited the "Feira Nacional do Cavalo" in Golega, Portugal (Golega Horse Fair).
    Carlos invited me to have a look around, learn about Portugal's proud history with horses, and the Iberian horse breed called the Lusitano.
    I was also joined by Jonny & Sam and we interviewed one of Portugal's top horse breeders Francisco Bessa de Carvalho @lusitanosdatela who gave us an insight into what makes Portugal's National Horse breed so special.

    My family going back to my great great grandfather were from Portugal and owned property in Golega and raised horses for the Horse Shows . When I was a child my mom and dad used
    to take me to the shows and teach me how to ride. My grandfather was an equestrian who won many awards. I have a winner's cup from him to this day. Great memories from a time
    long ago. Love when you make videos like this. Sending you Well Wishes from Richmond, VA. Jim, Harriet and Yuki🐕

    OMG I laughed hard with that abafado guys. Still wondering why the brown jacket guy was kinda speaking spanish to you hahaha. Abafado is a term for a fortified wine where the fermentation has been stopped by the addition of aguardente, leaving residual sugar. It's like a "Moscatel" wine. While Port is mainly red, and richer, the Abafado is made with white grapes and is a bit lighter.
    Really learned a bit with Francisco.

    Fantastic video, what atmosphere, from roast chestnuts to those beautiful Lusitano horses, and the slightly crazy old boys! Just loved it. And such a relaxed event, none of the boring old health and safety rules that are stifling so many events in UK. A big obrigada, & 👍

    Accents on portuguese words are essential to know to what we refer to and they are also part of their identity. The way you pronounce "Golega" without the accent ~ (til is the name), sounds like you'r saying "collegue" in portuguese. Cheers!

    So what Carlos failed to say is that there is actually 2 fairs at the same time. the oldest, form the 16th century is the saint martins fair (feira de são martinho) but the Horses fair (Feira Nacional do cavalo) is on its 48th year, and only is international for 24 years.

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That makes sense, i did see on the TV screens around the fair some other events happening and couldnt work out where they were!

  • @saragracadasilva8740
    @saragracadasilva8740 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    they are not "weird", the are proper DRUNK and happy, let them enjoy it. Mind you, I felt really uncomfortable for you ahaha, you so not wanted to drink that, poor you, you were bullied into it but took it like a champ even with Carlos's judging eyes, it was a bit cringe ahaha :) Jonny was soooo dragged along there but then seemed to have a great time. Great atmosphere on the second day. You can really tell Francisco knows his shit, and his English is brilliant. Cheesenuts would be a good concept :) Gina didn't want to go? I think she would have like it! Have a great sunday and thanks so much for keeping the vlogs, I know you wanted to make them more sparse, but it feels the opposite and WE LOVE IT :)

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha, i was trying to figure out what the drink was before downing it. Was a good laugh. We still dont have our fence installed to keep the dogs in so Gina had to stay behind sadly. It was a long trip down there and back and we were gone for thewhole day twice). Next year im sure she will love it :)

    • @saragracadasilva8740
      @saragracadasilva8740 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Man, it was so funny...I could totally see you were thinking "wtf am I drinking here? Man I hope I don't die, omg Carlos is looking at me and I don't know the guy well" I still don't know what an abafado is made of :) And there was one guy pressing the cup against your face I just thought "Poor Ken" all this while you were filming, I was laughing so hard. Hey, at least you had a pharmacy next door, that's a good spot for a drunken hole@@OKportugal

    • @OKportugal
      @OKportugal  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @saragracadasilva8740 Haha totally 🤣 Abafado is apparently a fortified wine. They add alcohol to increase the strength of the drink. Store bought it should only be around 18% alcohol, but home made can be much stronger. I was a bit wobbly after that 🤣

    Unfortunately I didn't make it to go (3 hour drive so not too bad). Golga, emphasizing the last syllable because of the ~ (tilde). 😁 (my farrier had me confused as i didn't understand what he said - as with most things as my Portuguese is very poor still and his English is non existent as with most adult in Northern Portugal - but he spelled it. I too said Golega, emphasizing the e.) We too have a Lusitano and he's one naughty creature. Our warmblood is much more obedient, has respect for electric fencing etc. Not our Europeu, he'll dive right through. I think Lusitanos are very beautiful but I wish they (Iberian people) would be more friendly when schooling and handling horses - and to all animals really - because it most of the time isn't very friendly. I don't know the situation with Lusitanos but I've heard many times that with their Spanish equivalent (PRE), the ones that go to northern Europe are the ones that can't coop with the way they are handled back here on the peninsula. I know that our Europeu also mustn't have had a very nice 'upbringing' because if you ask him something and he doesn't understand, he'll freak out and starts giving all kinds of answers showing all kinds of movements, like he has a runtime error. Very sad that so many of these horses are psychologically damaged and traumatized.
    But other than not agreeing with how animals are often treated here, I love this country so much.
