- Its been nearly 4 years since we moved from the UK to Central Portugal and bought our farm in Castelo Branco. We have slowly been renovating and upgrading our farm house and barn but this is probably the coolest addition so far! As the seasons change, so do the various jobs around our farm, and this week its all been about mowing and cleaning up the olive grove in time for the olive harvest. We also catch up with Joaquim and Costa for a beer and a bit of flail moving with the tractor.

Hello! You should look into covering your outside walls with capoto. It´s like a drywall and plaster composite that´s applied with a net. Should keep the heat in in the winter and out in the summer and save you a lot of euros on your electric bill.

Another great video. So happy for Mimosa and it’s always nice to see you guys and that Joaquim is a genuine solid good human being. Always enjoy him. I wished he learned English or you learned Portuguese because your friendship with flourish even more. A sit down interview with a translator would be great although I think Joaquim may be too modest

BTW In US we call that tractor attachment a "Bush Hog".

Hey Ken we had those poisonous pod plants in South Africa , we used to call them Malputte . I remember as a boy a dog ate a pod and if memory serves correct , it died. Very poisonous indeed as you say. Cheers from OZ , Sean

I suspect, with Juoguin plowing down that toxic seed head, they will produce multitude in spring, that farm needs to set down now a high pre emergent control so none of those seeds reproduce. And try to seed next year a good crop. 😊
Ah, electric blanket is a winner! We have a derelict house in Northern Spain and it gets quite chilly there on winter nights, electric blanket was indeed one of the best investments we've done 😅
Dogs are happy, farm looking good, (green).and air conditioning, wow. Things are looking up, awesome.
Making fires all the time to stay warm will get old, so a air system is wonderful. Jaoquim is the best, such a hard worker and a funny guy too. Ginas art is so wonderful, shes very talented.
Ken, I Googled this for you, about the flies.
What smells keep flies away?
Eucalyptus oil is a good option, but you can also use lavender, citrus, pine, clove, peppermint, and thyme essential oils. Most flies hate these scents, so the oils will act as a fly repellent.
I am also excited to hear whether it fixes the damp in the winter. In the US, we call them "heated mattress pads" and they often have graduated warmth so that your feet are the warmest zone and dual controls for larger beds that accommodate 2 people. Really an upgrade! .
Congrats on the a/c! We have them and they work really well as a dehumidifier. don't forget to clean the inside units 1x/year as they can become gross, like the window a/c units. There are kits you can buy online. Also give the outside unit a good rinse with the hose a few times a year as dust/dirt/leaves can build up. Yay! So happy Mimo is doing well!💕

I can understand Joaquim as I find something kind of zen-like running a tractor, plus the sense of accomplishment as you get the instant feedback of the results of your time and labor. We had been looking at buying some land in central Portugal and getting a tractor and running a small farm in cooperation with locals like Joaquim. It seems very much like rural Texas but nowhere near as hot. Sadly the death of NHR will put an immediate end to that idea.
Be careful about putting a deck or other airflow obstruction close to the heat pump compressor. Clear and adequate airflow is absolutely crucial for those things to run properly. Inadequate airflow will lead to a quick death to those units and reduce their efficiency drastically.
It's the same thing here in Ireland when the farmers are doing their fields, you can't even open a window 😮

Heated blankets (mattress pad) are absolutely the best, a must have! Highly recommend.

Healthy animals come from good owners taking proper care of them. So I'm not surprised about Mimosa. Growing up in Texas there was never a thought of not having a good A/C. Glad y'all were able to put A/C's throughout your dwelling along with heating. Yes Gina, the dampness will be gone.🥳

Finally AC, it must feel like a treat after years in that scorching heat. We are renovating a house in the tropics and my first priority laid on hubby's table was AC. I want to be able to sleep without flying insects especially mosquitos. Request granted! ..going for a month visit coming november😁
I love your laid back way of presentation, very entertaining and informative. Off topic, don't place your computer monitor in front of a window. Staring into the outdoor light makes your pupils contract, hence making focussing on your screen more difficult. Always put your monitor perpendicular to light sources ( no light from behind to prevent annoying reflections). In your case turn it 90 ° counter clockwise.
But then you get glare on the screen from the window!
I love having my desk in facing my window, i's lovely to gaze out when taking a break from the screen. The window faces northwest and has lace curtains, it makes a very comfortable workstation.
So exciting. One step at a time. Love watching your progress and trips. Headed your way this winter to find a property Dec - March. I got us a portable AC unit a few years ago when the dogs seemed to be suffering. Best thing I ever did and thats just with the UK summers, nothing compared to yours! All I have to do is chuck the flexi duct out the window.
We got one in the first year but i think we got a dud one as it was really rattley and noisey and the amount of heat coming out of the plastic exhaust tube was negating the cooling effect inside the room... we had it going out the window but the 2 metres of piping inside the room was radiating so much heat that it cancelled out the cooling effect.
While olive leaf has very few side effects, it can cause nausea in some dogs. Discontinue use if your dog experiences nausea, vomiting or digestive issues. At 3.51 munching on the Leaves.

why dont you use rotatioal grazing,to keep gras down and improve soil,also dont burn wood,use for veg beds as organic matter,hugo culture,regenerative farming,dig ponds etc water catchment

Hi guy's was it an all in one (product and fitting) package that you bought, or did you have to source your own install
It was an all in one job. We bought the units from Leroy Merlin in Castelo Branco... its a brand called Aire+ which according to the salesman is made by Mitsubishi. We have 4 heads indoors (two 12000btu and two 9000 btu) and two outdoor boxes. They work really well. Do Heating, Cooling and Dehumidification and can be controlled with a Wifi app too) When we bought them they cost 749.00 each (1500 for both split systems) and the fitting worked out at around 900 euros (around 2400 total cost). The fitters were a third party company organised by Leroy Merlin called Zerograus Climatização from Castelo Branco and they did a really fantastic job!

A/c looks great there Ken, they did a fantastic job. You spoke about flies bugging you there but do you get mosquitoes at all??? Just curious! Gratz for Mimo!
yes occasionally we have them for a few weeks, then they go away... maybe a couple of times a year, but only at night and its not too bad. I think the fish in the well and dam eat most of them! Flies are the bad one but thats also very seasonal and not the whole year too.
Mosquitos are number one and then flies and the roaches (german)...three in my black list..

it was 2400 euros for all 4 units installed and completed (4 interior units and two exterior)... two 9000 btu and two 12000 btu units. We are very impressed with the performance so far

Slurry is the worst. -- no , when they cut hay & stuff it’s ,left for mts & then after harvest spread on the fields. AWFUL😣
The problem with your dog. Is that the equivalent of HEARTWORM ? (transmitted by mosquitoes) Do you have that there?
No but but I think you get heartworm here too. Our dog has an incurable parasitic infection called Leishmaniasis. The parasites live in the bone marrow, and although they can be suppressed through medication, they can't be fully eradicated. They are transmitted through the bite of an infected sand fly, and untreated dogs can pass it onto other dogs.
