Having a mom as a lunch lady kinda breaks my heart knowing that so many kids hate her food but in reality she’s a really good cook at home
No one can blame her tbh because when cooking in bulk it's extremely hard to be a consistent good cook
Some lunch lady’s are good there is a really nice lunch lady at my school and everybody wants her to be the lunch aid every day but there is another lunch aid that everybody hates
its not her fault she has too work with groos ingreedints

As someone who works at a cafeteria, the main problem is having to serve 2-5 hundred people in just an hour or two. There just isn't time to give care to each individual item, which means every item suffers. Not to mention that every item comes in frozen.
I'm lucky to work at a relatively small trade school with a bit under two hundred students, so our stuff isn't bad, but I shudder to think about my public school peers.

I actually have two experiences:
1. My middle school served free breakfast and lunch, and one of the options you could get for breakfast was a muffin (not like one of those puffy, bakery-style muffins either, these muffins can be best described as 'flat' and 'dense'). The muffins tasted decent enough, but during 8th grade, I noticed was that the plastic wrap packaging the muffins were usually in looked like that it was shrinkwrapped and too hard to even open. One day, I asked a lunch lady about why the plastic was so weird looking.
She told me that it probably shrunk over the muffin in the oven.
Never ate the muffins again.
2. This one's shorter: On the first day of 9th grade, the burger I got for lunch had the patty stuck on the underside of the bottom bun via melted cheese. Had a good laugh about it with the kid next to me.
Also, no, the burger wasn't even good. Tasted rubbery.

When I was in high school I had taken to an interest in cooking, so most days I would pack and prepare my own lunches in the morning about an hour before I left, usually Korean and Japanese food from back home. When I first began in year 7 in Sydney people used to make fun of me for cooking and making things as teens tend to do, but they soon realised that my tenshinhan on rice, yakiniku and mentaiko onigiri, kimchi bokkaeumbap and katsu sandos were a lot more appealing then tinfoil frozen lasagne.
By year 12 I actually ran a pretty good gig making bento for other students. I even had a reservations list with meal sets for different prices. I assume that's what got me to eventually train to become a professional chef as I am now.

I'll be honest, graduating high school was the best day of my life. Not only did my friends and I celebrate by going out to drink once we were all legally allowed to (21 in Florida), but I also got the chance to eat food that didn't make me feel like I was trapped in a Gulag

I actually had a school that served up genuinely good food. They had stuff from chicken and waffles to tomato soup, and even a salad bar. They cooked the damn food themselves and it was pretty good. They even sold cookies! By school food standards, that food was fucking Michelin starred. But then Covid hit, and they had to resort to getting cheap meals from some delivery service (Health restrictions, probably. Even had to close up the salad bar). I wondered if the good food would ever come back, but eventually I left for a closer school (It’s in Santa Clarita, I live closer to downtown LA.) I wonder if they’ve been able to bring back their own delicious food.
In our middle school , we have meet all days and the meet balls are white.

Right? I remember multiple times I'd get milk, and it'd be icy.
One time in the 3rd grade the lunch ladies were serving grapes, and they were like the only editable thing on my tray so I made sure to savor every bite. But i bit into a particularly soggy one, and the insides were black, the grape exploded, and it was more sour than the toxic waste candy. I raised my hand to go to the bathroom, but at that point they were serving seconds and every other hand was raised. So either they’d serve me more rotten gapes or completely ignore me! So I excused myself to the bathroom, almost puked, and when I got out the staff gave me detention for not asking permission.

Where I lift we have a canteen and we get fries and fried chicken if it’s left YOU BETTER HOPE YOU GET THEIR IN TIME and the you can also buy drinks like sprite,ginger ale etc.
I’m not in high school, but I eat in their cafeteria and due to a group of kids refusing to eat at all, they added a different type of salad daily and that’s nicer than the elementary.

My school's lunches were made by the culinary class so you know 90% of the time you were getting restaurant quality food for cheap. The only thing I ever had there that I hated was the fish and chips because while the chips were good the fish's batter had formed a tube around the fish making the whole thing spongy and way too salty to eat.

My high school lunch in Yorktown is actually AMAZING! We have pizza every day, great chicken sandwiches, nachos, and free tater tots, many sauce options, good desserts, and the cafeteria is right in the middle of the square building, I honestly feel bad for you man!
My school served these things called “Pizza Dippers” which were just pieces of bread with cheese inside that you would dip in sauce. It sounds dumb but it was EASILY the best. Every time it was on the menu, you couldn’t get it if you were in the back half AT ALL. When you do get them, they slap SO hard though. Just amazing.

The pizza, the nachos, they had these jumbo cookies and muffins and they always sold soda/soft drinks and even ice cream bro. Sure it was overpriced but I was willing to pay good money for that because it always SLAPPED, I only had 1 bad encounter with my cafeteria and they sold this like crusty soggy looking Italian sandwich. The crazy thing about it is that our school is a public school.
i’m so happy that i go to a japanese public school where we usually get freshly made white rice or bread, a soup made with savory vegetables and meat and something like cucumbers, fish or fruit on the side. plus a cold mini milk carton for good measures. i feel bad for you guys.

My high school literally serves things that are jam-packed with sugar for breakfast. As for lunch though, the stuff is healthier than the literal desserts they serve for lunch, as well as them having a good taste & texture, but there are a few exceptions here and there, such as the baked chicken that would leave your mouth as dry as the Sahara & that one chicken sandwich that would turn your tongue ablaze.

With years of food experience, I can tell you with 100% certainty those buns were freezer burnt, then defrosted in the bag which makes them soggy too. The school was also buying the cheapest wraps and calling them tortillas, they likely didn't have fat in them to give the "tortilla" some stretch. Same with the tatertots, unless they were actually burnt in flavor, and the rest were not freezer burnt, but cooked so close together they couldn't crisp up and stayed soggy.
Not to mention most schools have to make food that everyone can eat reguardless of alergies, makes all the food bland, No sodium, no nun, just cooked and assembled

Down here in Australia everyone packs their lunch instead of going into the cafeteria and eat outside, but also the cafeteria food is really good it is just that we all just pack our lunch, although sometimes we go in and have lunch there

The food at my high school was actually pretty good but most students didn't have a lunch period. It got progressively worse over time as budget cuts destroyed the cafeteria since the principal and school superintendent had absolutely no clue why kids weren't buying the school lunches.

@@Diamondsnake0 to make the job easier for HS admins, the number of periods in a day was less than at the middle schools where everyone had a lunch period. In order to take the actual amount of classes needed to graduate in 4 years, a student had to not have a lunch period for at least a year or two. If you wanted to have a better transcript, not taking lunch was a must since most of the good electives and higher level classes were at that time. Absolutely beautiful system...

The milk cartons at my school cafeteria are always at the verge of being spoiled so on a random day of every week all the milk cartons were soggy and sour. My friends and I eventually found out a way to distinguish the expired from unexpired milk without checking the expiration date. Good times.

At one point, we are trying to eat our food, and one of our guys points out that his chicken tender weren't entirely thawed. He whacked it against the hard plastic tray he had been given to break the tender....The tray broke and it dented the table...They did a lot of cooking sins there...They somehow burned grits and put burnt Goldfish crackers in the Mac and Cheese...

At my primary school there was a lunch lady who was amazing at cooking, she knew how to make rice not look like it was puked 2 times, made sure the meals were great for us and was friendly. But as always, good things don't last forever and she left. Food was not as good after that.

This really describes my experience in elementary, but in middle school the food was all made right there and it was made really quite well.
My cafeteria isn’t even out in the open, the line is formed in a very tight, long hallway, then the ice cream at the end of it, which only had ice cream sandwiches. The pizza went from Papa Murphy’s to a sheet of stale bread where in the middle, a tiny squeeze of sauce, and cheese that doesn’t cover the rest of the square bread.

we have like six lunch ladies at our school and only two of them speak good english there’s another one that’s guatemalan and to other mexican ladies and i always speak spanish to them and they always seem really happy when i do they’re always sweet to me :)

I'm not even gonna lie, the cups of apple juice slapped in my school. That stuff was like holy water. Getting out of pe and opening one up, best feeling.

I took a bite into a burger at my school lunch. It was extremely salty to say the least so I took the bun off and there was a layer of salt over the meat. Where I couldn’t even make out it was a burger😂

After watching this, I came to a realization.
Sometimes when throwing away my tray, thered be an apple or something I didnt eat. Whatever office admins were chaperoning in the cafeteria would take it from me before I threw it away, saying not to waste it. For some reason I thought, "oh, I guess they're going to wat it then." I just realized that they were just grabbing it so they could throw it back into the rotation. They dont know what I could've done to that apple, man

The elementary school I went to had these supposedly "grilled cheese sandwiches" and NO ONE liked them. It either had no cheese or it did have some but there was so little of it, you could eat the whole sandwich and you would forget there was even cheese. The bread was the most stale thing ever. I took one of them home and threw it against my wall like 16 times and it never broke until I took it to the flaming sidewalk (Because where I lived it was always hot) and it chipped off a piece and it burnt to death, despite its staleness. Yes, it was THAT stale.
