Jocko's ability to lay out The Path as defined by the culmination of our collective knowledge and our well understood failures at all levels(from individuals to the entirety of the species) will be the foundation in which we rebuild our Country. Not only will they be integral to our personal successes, but will elevate us to global leaders in not just military prowess and might, but in manufacturing innovation as well as education. It's time to transgress the physical and mental sacrifices that are so heavily relied on by our economic and theological adversaries, and use our commitment to self and each other to preserve and strengthen that which makes our Country so great.
My basketball coach used to say it like this. Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up and knows it has to run faster than the fastest lion or else it will be eaten. And every morning in Africa a lion wakes up and knows it has to run faster than the slowest gazelle or else it will starve. Do you know what that means? I don't, but when you wake up, you better be running.
Seriously mate? You are neither a gazel nor a lion. And you are not in an African jungle! You are free to live more calmly and peacefully. I'm all for working hard and enjoying the process, but people need chill and just live the present moment
There’s so much motivation in every podcast it’s unreal! Just started watching a week ago and can’t get enough. Starting to change my life 1 step at a time.
So grateful you did this follow up to the 174 podcast. It really hit home for me when I watched 174 how many areas I need to continually work at. Thank you all for putting out another impactful podcast.
All the people you mentioned at the end definately deserve a big THANKS! Don't forget those folks clocking in at the grocery store keeping the shelves stocked and checking us out also.
with echo saying "don't look tired even if you feel tired" gave legitimacy to what i've thought during football conditioning now that i'm one of the older guys on the team that if i look tired or weak the younger guys watching me go will start to follow suit.
*woah, Echo*. The concept that you are comfortable with who, and what, someone actually is, and when that reality changes, rather than accept it, you resist it in order to keep them in that 'box' you have stuffed them in. That comfort zone has some pull. Then again, so does a rip tide. Fuckin' deep, buddy. I like it, and I underestimated you.
Just got done with 4 years in D1 college baseball. So much testosterone in the locker room. 25-30 guys. Many Type A individuals. You can feel the tension when someone tries to step up and lead. It's an awkward power struggle of ex-high school alphas. We settled on a type of collaborative leadership where no one guy was explicitly "The Leader". We did implement direction, initiatives, and goals. We came up short of a big goal of ours to win our conference tournament by one game. It was the furthest our college had ever got. But we were the first loser. Could officially electing a single "Team Captain" have contributed to a better result?
My grandpa always told me when I went to work at a young age was “just make ‘em a good hand.” Or “just be a good hand” and it’s crazy how that base line, or ‘commander’s intent’ helped my success. Crazy to think about.
Service can be a large part of being on the path. Getting promoted to civilian can leave a person feeling like something is missing, even when work, school, relationships and health are progressing well. There are so many agencies and organizations that need help right now: from homeless shelters to hospitals, that it's easy to find something that gels well with interests and personality.
31:00 I agree with echos sentiment here. I think that mind-altering experiences are essential for creating good writing and artwork. Alcohol, however, is probably the worst choice possible for a mind altering experience. Things like meditation, spirituality, near-death experiences, learning an instrument or something challenging, and consuming other artwork will work thousands of times better. I think that this is the sentiment that echo was ultimately trying to make
I loved this podcast and I read the book. I made a self evaluation spreadsheet on excel that I am rating my diet in exercise. I have it on my phone so I rate 1-5 on exercise 1-5 on diet and supplements that totals every week. I wish I could put a screenshot up.
Honor myself and others. Respect for life. Truth before face. Love and peace are the biproduct, not the virtues themselves. It's served me well so far even though Im pretty dense. I guess I was more squared away than I though. This episode was great, thank you.

The section on Financial Management is worth the listen alone. Managing your finances as both incoming and outgoing (vs. just focusing on income) is the key to success. I generally try to want less vs. thinking I need to earn more. Not discounting income, just pointing out there are two sides to the equation.

Jocko, do you feel like you're embracing a leadership role with your podcast? General podcast feedback: Appreciated the dynamic back and forth between you and Echo, presenting a united front in discussing the issue and delivering a cohesive message about the topic.
The importance of being on time, which another podcast I glazed by from this channel. I lost a couple jobs I really liked for being late. Since then I challenge myself to be on time everyday. I hate to be late now.
Jazz....I talk to other veteran teachers about this when we talk about how to talk to newer teacher. The longer you teacher, the more able you are to "play jazz" in class and riff when the situation calls for it. New teachers are locked to the sheet music and the only way to get to Jazz is to practice.
Great Podcast! I'm still listening but my comment is that I think maybe that semi-argument you guys got into can be very easily resolved. I'm talking about that first bit about one's thoughts, dreams, and IDEAS and where you discussed pro's and cons of doing it and getting it out there vs. some internal process of vetting and evaluation. Maybe a good "rule" at least for some of us is to always do at least do SOME follow up, somehow in some way, on each idea. Maybe once you begin to follow up and start to do SOMETHING then the new idea will take off and develop a life and momentum of it's own within your life and work, or maybe once you stop just thinking about it and start to actually DO it you will immediately see that it was not a good idea at all. This works for me because for every truly good idea I pursue to the end I also have about a hundred bad or mediocre ideas. And then sometimes I get off to a bad start and am tempted to give up but most of the time if it's REALLY a good idea some voice deep down keeps telling me to keep on trying. I'm not sure but I think this approach fits within Jocko's generally awesome philosophy and I will not be at all surprised if he has mentioned something like this in other podcasts. Thanks for all your great work! Regarding money I totally agree with everything you said and I would add that we each have a MORAL obligation to care about money. Unless you are totally isolated with no friends and no family or anybody that cares about you then you owe it to your friends and family and everyone who cares about you to take care of yourself fiscally so that they don't need to bail you out or worse yet stress and worry because they can't bail you out. Even if you ask them not to help you are still going to cause them a great deal of unhappiness if they have to watch you unravel to where you cannot take care of yourself. Even if you succeed in keeping them from helping they will still feel stress and guilt.
i think tha any idea or concept, with enough polishing and time to work it, it can become a great idea. Jocko, Amazon does not ship your book to Australia. I need to lose weight before having spine surgery and I am having great difficulty achieving this urgent goal. Please advise, with thanks.
You don't need Jocko's advice, you know what you need to do. No one can give you the answer, you need to research put in the work. Research healthy foods, take a good honest look at the foods that you are eating. Diet is going to be the number one thing that needs to change. Increase your exercise, I don't know what you're able to do, but since it's back surgery my guess is that you need to be careful, yoga would be a good place to start researching. There are plenty of TH-cam videos if you decide to go in that direction. Exercising will likely be painful, pay attention to your body to know if it is a good pain or a bad pain. I cannot articulate the difference, but maybe someone else out there can, research it. You can do this.
Hey Jocko + Echo! Where can I buy that awesome leather kettlebell you guys mentioned in one of your videos? Is it called the Burden? Yeah, I need me one of those
I like using rubrics and grading yourself against yourself. There are almost 8 billion people on the planet and we are all aging every day. Someone somewhere is ahead of you in some way and someone somewhere is behind you in some way. Norm referencing has a place but very it is very limited. Criterion referencing is what matters.
Jocko I'm really interested in joining the Army and possibly going for the special forces, I train jujitsu and lift I believe I have alotta of physical tools. I feel like I would be comfortable with everything but literally the only thing I know I'm gonna have a fear of going in is Airborne school I'm terrified of jumping out of a plane I can't get outta my head on that one. but I also wanna face that fear and do it ... any advice would be helpful 👍
Exposure therapy would work for this. Find a good therapist for this and they'll help you conquer the fear easy. They have you do different exposure exercises to desensitize you to the fear so that it decreases. It's really effective. They'll do 3 main types: Imaginal Exposure: closing your eyes and imagining yourself jumping out of a plane Virtual Exposure: wearing a VR headset and experiencing yourself virtually going out of a plane In Vivo Exposure: going in real life to a plane and gradually getting closer to jumping out of a plane, to desensitize the fear. Your fear in each situation will start at let's say a 9 and then go down to 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and maybe even 0.
1:23:00 I would disagree. Mobbing works for a reason. A bunch of angry people oppressing a common enemy for personal gains is real and happens all the time in the world. Anger solves a lot of problems for people, the goal is to instill fear in the other person.
Follow through on those events though and you'll almost always find they are a short term rather than long term gain. ^I don't know if that's true but it reads good.
Zen warrior code: With a desire to save all beings, I shoot myself into hell like an arrow. Nobody talks about this....everyone wants to be in heaven, but nobody wants to lift any heavy ass weights. I would add the....prayer, meditation and spiritual and religious reading. Time for God and silence....

How would you reach 5 on diet? I eat healthy and always avoid junk food, but that seems too easy to really be a 5.

We need Travis Haley on
Silly Jocko, there are no "good" politicians 🤣
The whiskey thing hurt. You could drink it as an exercise in mindfulness? Point 2 on the code? Maybe?
Please 🙏

Jocko I'm really interested in joining the Army and possibly going for the special forces, I train jujitsu and lift I believe I have alotta of physical tools.
I feel like I would be comfortable with everything but literally the only thing I know I'm gonna have a fear of going in is Airborne school I'm terrified of jumping out of a plane I can't get outta my head on that one. but I also wanna face that fear and do it ... any advice would be helpful 👍
@Hobo Battleship thanks bro 👍
Exposure therapy would work for this. Find a good therapist for this and they'll help you conquer the fear easy.
They have you do different exposure exercises to desensitize you to the fear so that it decreases. It's really effective.
They'll do 3 main types:
Imaginal Exposure: closing your eyes and imagining yourself jumping out of a plane
Virtual Exposure: wearing a VR headset and experiencing yourself virtually going out of a plane
In Vivo Exposure: going in real life to a plane and gradually getting closer to jumping out of a plane, to desensitize the fear.
^I don't know if that's true but it reads good.
jocko when are you going to do an Eddie Gallagher podcast?
