The humility and restraint Dave has to not feel the need to chime in and give his two cents after every portion is incredible to me. You can tell he really respects this guy for laying the foundation of what later turned out to be his entire career. This was an awesome podcast.
@@HomeshighlandPark my grandfather always said the best way to tell the quality of an expert or how wise someone Is in their job or field of expertise is how humble they are, and how fast & easily they can explain and also teach / train someone else with their expert knowledge and I think this podcast is the perfect example of my grandfather's quote in action!
At the end of the podcast, Dan Pederson says to Jocko, "I admire what you do." Simple words, but when Cpt. Pederson tells you that, I think you're on the right path. Bravo on another outstanding interview.
3:27:00 "Creating a culture of excellence, openness, and self evaluation so that your crews can improve and grow is an essential element to success" thought I should write that down.
Thank you Jocko for your amazing podcast and my deepest respect for the warriors who are sharing their stories! I was 9 years old when I experienced the fall of Saigon. My father who worked with the Americans took me and my brother to our rooftop every night as we witnessed the approach of the VC on the city. As a kid witnessing the nightsky light up and the shockwaves reverberating through the air and the American jetfighter pilots screeching across the rooftops towards the approaching army will always stay with me. On the 6th of April the situation in Saigon got dire. Fear had gripped the city. My dad had a CB radio that he communicated with the Americans and I remember the frenetic chatter as we were told to evacuate. We had a window of 30 hours. We lost everything. I'll never forget the chaos, the madness to get to the only airport Tan Son Nhat. Towards and at the airport pandemic had ensued. I remember clear as a bell when a World Airways exploded on takeoff, killing many Americans and orphans on board. The pilots refused to take off. A pilot said... we're not taking off, the air is full of lead! We finally made it to Bangkok. My father stayed behind and was one of the last to leave the besieged city from the rooftop of the American Embassy. To this day I'm still trying to piece together what my father was involved in. I will never know, since I lost my dad one year later in a plane crash. So your podcast has helped me in so many ways of coming to a better understanding of these last days of Saigon through your amazing guests, warriors that I have the deepest respect for. Thank you!
Thanks! So many echos for me. My Dad was a USAF Aviation Cadet that same year, doing his training with Class 55K at Greenville, MS, and Bainbridge, GA. He flew F-100s out of Danang in 1964 and F4C Phantoms out of Cam Rahn Bay in 1965-66. He earned a DFC that second tour, flying close air support mostly in Laos but some in South Vietnam and bombing missions in North Vietnam. I'm so proud of you aviators and your commitment to fun and excellence.
I am so glad that you and other podcasts are collecting these stories. Thank you for doing this. I wish my great-uncle, a late war Vietnam Vet, would do something like this.
This is perhaps the best interview that I have heard in years! It was like a book that you cannot put down. I have so much respect for all of you guys. Thank you so much.
My grandfather always said the best way to tell the quality of an expert or how wise someone Is in their job & field of expertise is how easily they can teach/train their knowledge to somebody else, but above all how humble they are, and I think this podcast is the perfect example of my grandfather's quote in action!
Jocko and Echo, if either of you ever read this, please get former SR-71 pilot Brian Shul on the podcast! He’s got an amazing story and I’d love to hear the conversation that you guys have with him, about all of his experiences.
WOW! What a story! And what a warrior and leader. His legacy and impact on military fighter aviation is world wide in it's scope. And yet he spent most of the interview telling the exploits of his team mates and telling how they made the successes he experienced all possible. What humility. Can't wait for his next appearance.
These podcasts consistently inspire me to set greater and greater challenges for myself and to stop settling for the easy path. Thank you Jocko. Few pieces of media have had a direct positive impact on my life, but your podcast is certainly one of the most influential to do so.
My old man used to run supply for this guy back in the early 80s. Anything they asked for they got. This was an awesome show. The history, stories and lessons. Top notch.
This is one of the best podcasts you have done! Dan Pederson is one of those old school tough SOB's, what an absolute legend! The story in the book you read at about 1:31:00 sounds a hell of a lot like a story John Stryker Meyer told, but I guess Vietnam was such carnage, these thing must have happened a lot.
Pederson's humility is incredible and acts as a firm reminder to me of how a gentleman should behave in a way that is conducive to exceptional achievement. I cannot thank Dan Pederson, Jocko, Dave (aka Good Deal Dave Berke), and Echo enough for making this episode happen. I learned a huge amount, and I will do my best to assimilate what I learned into my own mindset. On to the next.
This was an awesome 4hrs. I listened to some 2 days on my drive to work/drive home from work and just finished watching on my lunch break. It was an incredible insight and this is just one persons life, we have soooo many other Vets that we don’t know about that also have these life stories, it’s incredible. Thank you for this.
When you bring these guys on, I cannot press pause. What a wonderful and inspiring legacy this man has laid down for everyone to emulate. Jocko, thank you for bringing these stories to light. These heroes deserve to be heard. And hopefully current and future generations will see this and take the torch. 🙏🏼❤️🇺🇸
This was a fantastic podcast. The closing of his military chapter was a sad aspect of the story, but it's great to hear he was able to shift his mindset and find freedom and beauty in life outside the military. Great show!
Thank you Jocko for honouring this great man. Your thorough preparation and character is inspirational. Dan Pederson, what a man you are. Thank you for passing on your wisdom to future generations.
Thank you Dan...Dave..and Jocko..you are heroes..rockstars!... sharing the real Top Gun story is riveting!! I'd like to hear Jocko read the whole book! Currently living near Miramar, I appreciate this epic podcast💜
As a personal friend of Captain Dan Pederson, I really enjoyed this. I've known the Captain since I was a young boy and he's a good man. Thank you Jocko for the great podcast.
Wowwww...what an amazing life and story. Took me forever and a day to listen to this entire pod...and it was worth every second - and the epilogue at the end - such a perfect conclusion with her voice in the background haha
That is UNREAL that he crossed paths with Mary Beth again!! What a story, book , and interview! God Bless you Dan. Thank you Jocko for such quality content.
I've listened to a majority of the podcasts presented by Jocko and Echo Charles. Always enjoy it when Good Deal Dave can make it. I appreciate the respect they show their audience which they convey in getting first rate heroes as guests without sacrificing the humor and vitality these people have to share with the rest of us. It is my humble opinion that this is the best so far because we got to know Yank's heart and mind, not just his accomplishments. What a legacy. These longer sessions are worth every minute.
I’m also is a Navy/Marine veteran. I’d listened to podcast 232 twice in a row. I now understand Accountability and the Leadership. Wished I could have served under such a leader. I would have ran thur brick walls for such a Man. Where were this accountability and leadership when our great America was dealing with and trying to understand the lies referenced the Pat Tillman tragedy? Thank you Jocko.
This gives a new meaning to "Fight Club"! That is just so cool. What a spectacular American Mr. Pedersen is. This is why our country is so great. I would like to see a TOP GUN movie about his life. So what if it is a 12 hour movie, no factor as Jocko would say. Jocko and Echo, props to your Podcast that just keeps getting better. Hard to believe after 230 Podcasts and a zillion hours, but you just keep bringing it! Book ordered now!!!
That "You keep in touch with me" towards the end there...I actually found that...kinda touching :) Great podcast!
