Could you get Clint Emerson on the podcast? He was in SEAL team 3, DVGRU (team 6) and an agent for the NSA. He is the author of 100 deadly skills, a book that teaches skills for survival.
His demeanor changes depending on the guest. Obviously he's gonna be more relaxed with a buddy on the podcast than someone he met the first time that morning. It's normal human behavior.
Top Shelf content here. Dave makes a great sounding board for Jocko; he has succinct and insightful contributions to the conversation. This episode was richer because of his inclusion.

Patton was really good at recognizing windows of combat opportunities and exploiting them with intense focus and speed, pushing his forces to reach higher than they had before and accomplish objectives that were thought to be unobtainable by his peers and superiors. I also think it's good to start out your IADs and playbook with 3 well-rehearsed drills, then expand to 5 and practice them often. Once you get into a combat rhythm and the enemy adapts to that rhythm, you can switch to another approach he wasn't expecting and throw him off base again so that you're constantly inside his decision-making process until he is spent.
Intuition is when you are committed to Never Taking Time Off but then something inside leads you to accept a vacation which turns into a lead you'd never have come across otherwise.
WOW the difference between Tactical and Strategic gave me an entirely new lenses to look at the world with. Being pretty competitive I have a hard time backing down - even when tactically I lose leadership capital to get a victory.
32:32 A good point to that comes from the book "The Mission, Men, and Me" by Pete Blaber. The author discussed the lack of situational context that comes from gaining intelligence from simple satellite images. The author also added that it is outright dangerous to commit troops against an enemy without developing the situation and context through thorough ground reconnaissance. Gotta talk to the guys on the ground.
Dave Berke: Marine Corps Pilot, Top Gun pilot, Top Gun Instructor, Top Gun Senior instructor, 1st CO of the F-35 Operational Squadron, Cdr. of Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) in Rahmadi - TU Bruiser, Team Member of Echelon Front... One thing I absolutely hated during my four year in the Corps was the phrase “don’t ask why!” If you weren’t a robot and you asked why we were doing something a certain way then you were labeled immediately. Toward the end of my enlistment I didn’t mind Marines asking me why we were doing something. I wanted them to understand the overall objective so they could think on their feet if something went wrong and make a judgment call on what to do next to meet said objective. I hope the Marine Corps is getting out of that mentality and it sounds like they are.
Jocko, do you ever get frustrated like I do when you have to deal with others who can not think outside of the box ? What is the best way to deal with them.
Yes please elaborate. I don’t have the perspective you’ve got - I’m a man - but I have noticed some ways in which women would be better off with some gender-specific tactical advice.
@@jabuticaba2000 Other than one musician, all of Jocko's guests are military. And, although 10 years in prison is certainly tough, it is no comparison to special forces action.

The things that makes Americans great at combat is the individualism of the American soldier to think outside of the box on his own to overcome the enemy without having to get approval from higher ups in the command chain that dictatorial, communist or socialist governments demand of their forces because that they are conscript forces or lack of trust of their own command structure.

Maybe start with taking them to lunch and asking them what's wrong. See if they'll open up in a non judgmental/off the record environment. You can't address a problem if you don't know the problem.
Of war is not a prescripted event, how does art of war work its self into what they're talking about. I'm probably missing something but I would appreciate a response from someone who is more educated/qualified to explain. Thnx
The art of war is a rough overview but in it is wrote that if one know every aspect of oneself and this and that victory is certain but the ultimate truth is that no one person can predict the future with absolute certainty, so I think sun Tzu was perhaps an idealist who even though strategically intelligent believed in the art too much ignoring the chaos of the real world.
No, but seriously. I think having Vaush on your podcast would be very interesting, as he does agree with many things you espouse but sits on the opposite side of the political spectrum. As much as he likes to call you a caveman, he does respect you.
