September 17, 1987 - A $80M shopping complex, Portage Place Shopping Centre, officially opens in downtown Winnipeg. CBC News Winnipeg reports on the opening day.
The buildings that stood on Portage Ave were beautiful turn of the century architecture like the Exchange District. It was a sin for them to be torn down! The mall became a white elephant with a criminal element and people shopping were driven away even during the day out of fear of violence and theft.
Portage Place became a Hangout for Africans and Aboriginals. Most Africans live just a short walk from Central Park .you can't do business selling just Coffee.
Picassso's restaurant never opened. Wonder if they had a hunch about the future of the mall.
Crazy how time flies

I wonder if that time capsule will ever be opened, or if it'll just be destroyed with the building, since I doubt anybody cares anymore.
Who’s here after watching stranger things 3, even though it wasn’t here
spoopy .juice I’m glad you appreciate 80’s Malls and aesthetics, cause Portage Place is essentially unaltered, minus a few things
I've lived in Winnipeg my whole life, from 1960 until now, and I've never been to Portage Place and I doubt I'll ever have a reason to go.
