- A report on the grand opening of the new downtown shopping mall, with thousands of shoppers checking out the new landmark, with executives and store owners expressing zero concern about its viability, but surrounding retailers expressing concern about their survival.

Sad that both the Bay downtown and Eatons downtown are both gone now. Miss them both. I suppose Portage Place will hopefully not be next but who knows given the Pandemic. Downtown is just not the same anymore.
Goddamn this is sad to watch. They had so much hope for this mall. In my lifetime, Portage Place has been anything but good. It's a great contender for Dan Bell's series.

Downtown used to be a well kept and nice place, for those who don't remember it. It had so much potential going forward but it was squandered sometime along the way.
It's incredibly sad what a dump it's been allowed to turn into, because people used to actually care and now it's become nothing but a concoction of social apathy and disregard, whether it be here or the many other cities around the world that have gone the same way.
Genuinely bums me out.

You said it. I haven't been there in a long time and have no desire to ever go back. Nothing but crime and riff raff hanging out there. Needs to be torn down.

I seen a lady just openly stealing at the dollar store at portage place lol no one cares what you do there I guess
I remember when it opened. It actually had some nice high end stores and imax theatre. After a few years however reality set in and the slow decline of the mall and north Portage began. This decay and abandonment of downtown is not just unique to Winnipeg. It happens to a lot of cities in north America. I actually give the city and province credit. They had to do something to revitalize north Portage and decided a large retail mall was the answer. In retrospect however, this probably was wrong.
Hilarious. The paint scheme is the same in 2022 as it was in 1987.
Portage place was designed to have a condo built on top of the mall, sad they never went through with it.
Two towers but neither got built and still remain so to this day. They should open another Liquor Mart, and stock extra cheep sherry to the rafters. Good luck Winnipeg!

The building will probably still be there, whether it will all still be a mall or not is a totally different question.

IT'S TO BE TORN DOWN AND REPLACED WITH LUXURY CONDOS
No... it will be a medical centre, grocery store and low income housing. Edmonton Court will not exist soon. I wonder what will happen to the capsule they placed under the clock tower?

I feel like im gonna get jumped there half the time I go there especially evenings there aren't safe, this video made it look like it had high hopes but from my experience, not, but still grew up knowing this place more than any other mall in winnipeg lol

The seafood place in the food court makes really good shrimp through.

Wishing that they hadn't built Portage place. Not only it was/is a hot bed for crime especially when it came to the drug trade. It also created a physical barrier that divides a community. The place is ugly to boot, I've always thought this, even when I was a child.

By 2030 it will once again look different and function as a living space, office space, community center, two outdoor plazas and a green way in behind and a Greenway through Edmonton Street. All the necessary pubic walkways and a new walk in clinic and sports injury centre. As well a heath center. What will be missing are the people that call it home now. The Prairie Theater is staying place and will have a new entry point. All this will lead to another redevelopment of the Hudson Bay building which is somehow to be converted into apartment rentals, and low income housing.
