    To think Atari was once at the forefront of gaming! After a slew of terrible movie tie-in games, failed consoles, and general lack of innovation, Atari fell from gaming grace. Theirs is a cautionary tale to game developers of today, namely the ones who are pushing out buggy releases and lackluster live service games with predatory monetization systems (looking at you EA, Konami and Bethesda!)

      I don’t think IIRC is a common enough abbreviation to just use it and expect it to be understood. I figured it out with context clues, but surely many won’t and would be confusing.

    I remember my first video game console was the Atari 2600. My now late father gave me and my older brother the system along with a big box full of games for it. This was back in the mid 80s. I was only 4 or 5 years old at the time. And I remember one of my favorite games for it was E.T. Not knowing at the time it was consider one of the worst games of all time. I also remember the Jaguar and the Lynx consoles. Since I remember those commercials for them. But I never had the actual systems. Mainly because I was very smart for my age. And knew that those systems were only going to be around a few years. Which is why both me any my older brother each had a Gameboy, the NES, and the SNES back then. Because we knew the Nintendo is going to be around for a very, very long time to come. Now the only Atari related games that I is the Puzzler World games I have for my ds and 3ds. I have a love for puzzle games.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      One site said 2.7 million sold (including or not including returns?). Any game selling over 1 million seems like a success as there were less than 30 games for Atari that did it, and none for Intellivision (unless you include Poker and Blackjack).
      Five weeks for one programmer. Maybe if it had been a team, like having a sound and music person he could have focused on the problems and another couple weeks for some playtesters to give their feedback and make corrections? (Programmer said he had 3 days to make "Chase the Chuckwagon.")
      Spielberg said, Why don't you make an E.T. version of Pac-Man? I think it could have been a bicycle-chase action game.
      However, if you manufactured 10 million cartridges and only sold 8 million (Pac-Man), those two million carts would be at least a $2 million loss, maybe $10 million if each box with cart, manual, catalog and shipping cost $5 each.

    I've beaten E.T. on the Atari 2600 countless times. I just don't get why E.T. got so much hate? I don't get that at all. Didn't anybody read the manual that came with the game cartridge? Just read the manual along with a little practice and you'll see that the game plays just fine. If you fall into a pit, you get out by rolling the directional stick to the left or right on your way to the surface, depending from which side of the pit you fell in. There is a little challenge, but the game is still very playable.

    Atari was one of the causes but not the primary cause of the Crash of '83. Many other established consoles also suffered from too many poor quality games, which led to slow advancement in console designs (most companies made their money from the games and not the consoles). Atari happened to be the poster child of the industry and catches most of the flak.

      Lucky you, I wish I had a copy. E.T. is actually one of my most favorite games on the Atari 2600.

  • @awwrelic
    @awwrelic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pretty sure #1 was more because of 3rd-party companies using the Atari VCS/2600 as a huge dumping ground for crap and less because of Atari themselves putting it out. I recall that Atari actually tried to stop 3rd-party developers (at the time, Activision) from making games for their platform and went to court over the issue. Activision won, and while they put out a number of classic games, the ruling also opened the floodgates to other developers. So I can't really blame Atari for that one.
    As for ET, while the game was hard, I think the big problem was that people really needed to read the instructions instead of tossing them with the box. The same especially could be said for Raiders of the Lost Ark for the VCS/2600, since it was one of those rare 2600 games to require the use of both joysticks.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raiders sold over 1 million, and E.T. over 2 million. But disappointment's a bitch. I didn't win the former as a kid, but only figured out how to dig from the internet. As far as I know there was nothing else to dig before the ending to practice on.
      But maybe kids who saw the movies were expecting action games. I can imagine a version of Raiders where you burn snakes, then fight goons guarding the plane, then chase the truck with a horse, then drive the truck. Likewise E.T. could have been a bicycle-chase game.

      I didn't get it or Raiders, but played them in 1983 when staying with friends. I don't think I ever considered taking a bad game back to the store, and since I usually only bought from Atari, I'm not sure which one I'd have taken back. Pele's Soccer? Maybe the M-Network games I bought new since they were two-player only?

      True. But WB didn't know what to do after the investor panic, so they broke it up. Atari had the console division, the computer division, an arcade division, and I don't know where AtariSoft falls in there. If they kept making fantastic arcade games then they could have used the combined company to keep selling ports.

  • @georgeharris572
    @georgeharris572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    sadly Atari had some great titles over the years, it was just how they used them in the long run that both hurt and helped them. It also didn't help that they took an approach to gaming that stayed with how they did the arcade machines that started the company. Now the guys running it don't even have that much of a standard with how most of their titles have been the last decade or more. On a side note, I had that E.T. game ... and to this day I'm not sure what it was supposed to be other then a giant bug ...

    6:03 I agree on that part as to why the Atari Lynx failed, despite being a great little handheld on its own with a equally great homebrew community. Atari didn't do a good marketing push for the system, which is one of the reasons that led to its death. On the other hand, the Atari Jaguar is NOT a god-awful system as some people make it out to be. I had two during my lifetime and the controls actually feels confortable to hold, once you get used to it. My favorite titles on the Jaguar are AVP, Tempest 2000, Missile Command 3D, Super Burnout, Rayman, Ruiner Pinball, NBA Jam T.E., Iron Soldier, Brutal Sports Football and Ultra Vortek :)

    • @ressljs
      @ressljs 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think most people hold an extreme view one way or the other on the Jaguar. The TH-cam echo chamber has definitely convinced people it was a terrible console, but I also hear some people make wild claims over it's "untapped power." My opinion, as some one that has a Jaguar and roughly 75% of the games made for it, it was roughly what you'd expect for a system costing $250 in 1993. Had the exact same hardware been released by a different company that had a real marketing budget and popular IP to bring in built in fan-bases, I think it could have been a success. I've always thought what doomed the Jaguar was not it's hardware, but the state Atari was in when they tried to launch it.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Atari sabotaged the rollout of that system by having nearly all the games for it also on the 2600; releasing it with the 1970s' Pong-style Super Breakout; it having the same quality as 400/800 games but not being compatible; and releasing it a few months after Pac-Man helped sell another 2 million 2600 consoles, going to 5 million by the end of 1982 or early 1983 for a total of 15 million in circulation.
      I never heard anyone say they weren't getting the 5200 because of the controller. Maybe they said that for Intellivision? But the joystick Atari released in 1977 was defective, broke down and was replaced by a better model in 1978. So nothing new there. If it sold, maybe they'd have released better controllers in fall 1983?
