My grandpa work at Phillips. Not sure what he did but he did get a free CDI and I believe some type of watch at retirement. I guess getting rid of the console.
Neat. My father's best friend was the son of Panasonic Canada's CEO, so when the 3DO came out my dad would go over and play it with the CEO's son at their house.
@koolaid33 Even though those system are bad now a days those systems still are my favorites because of all the good times watching him play casino games and learning how to and how he got it. With me loving video games thr stories of your dad's time doing that would make me curious about his thoughts and fun with it. I didn't has the money for that stuff but like to hear about it good or bad.
The 3DO appears on these lists all the time mostly trashed by people who never played them. It’s easy to look back now and say how bad it was but it predated ps1 and some titles were really good. Still has the best version of road rash to this day
I had the 3DO, which I loved. Atari 5200, which I loved but it left me disappointed because the controllers broke & I couldn't play it anymore. And I had the Virrtual Boy, which I got for $15, with every game included. I liked it, but got bored pretty quickly.I then lost the controller, so I couldn't play it anymore.
What did you do with these consoles? Just to let you know, the 3DO is worth about $300 CAD with the console, controllers and cables, and the Virtual Boy is like $600 just for a working system alone (in good condition). Don't know about the 5200 though.
@@koolaid33 I sold the 3DO years ago for $200 to a friend. I sold the Virtual Boy at a yard sale. Since it was missing the controller, I got like $50 for it. Should have held onto it.
I once tried the Virtual Boy at a retro game store, the 3D effect was admittedly cool, but yeah I got a headache almost instantly and it wasn’t fun to look at even for a few minutes. And the design was absolutely horrible. Thankfully the 3DS was what Virtual Boy should’ve been, and succeeded.
Same here. The Virtual Boy was very interesting. There was a Sears store when i used to live in Iowa as a kid that had a small video game corner in the store and one of the gaming devices set up for customers to check out and play was the VB. Yes, prolonged play was strainful to the eyes. I had fun, tho. Too bad child me was unable to convince his mom and dad to buy one. But i got one just over a year ago thanks to an old childhood friend reunited who had it all this time collectin' dust; let me have it and the games he got for it. If Nintendo ever chose to do a limited rerun of the VB like with the Nintendo Mini and Super NES Mini, i can see them redesigning the VB headset as similar to the Oculus Rift or PS VR devices so we dont have to lay down or sit slouched forward over a table ledge like the original VB does.
Amiga CDTV, CD32, Memorex VIS, and ViewMaster Interactive deserve to be on the list before the Atari 5200. Heck, the Atari XE deserves to be on there before the 5200. It wasn't a great console, but it runs circles around all of those.
The problem with Ouya is (1)it uses a custom android version; and (2)just attach a gamepad to any android phone then it becomes a hand-carry console already
Around the time of the CDI I remember seeing these really odd arcade machines. Which had people talking on the screen with a style similar to the CDI. Only, the technology was more advanced. The particular genre of gaming was unique. It felt rather futuristic even. I only remember seeing one arcade machine like this in a hotel in Missouri back in the 1990's.
The Ouya is actually making a comeback. Unofficially of course. I'm surprised you didn't cover the Gamerstick, it was worse than the Ouya. Also, quit with the 2 32bit CPU thing. That is not why the Jaguar was considered 64bit. It had a 64bit bus used by the blitter. The CD-i is crazy. To this day it's still not completely emulated. Knock the Virtualboy all you want but the games are now a blast to play on VR headsets!
I had a Hyperscan back in 2006. It just looked so cool from the ads, and the concept sounded awesome to me as a kid. Unfortunately I learned the hard way how much of a disappointment it was, and I begged my parents to take it back, and Walmart employees had to explain to my parents that they couldn't take it back. The Hyperscan brings back so many bad memories. I could have just got a PS2, GameCube, or Xbox game instead, but I got that monstrosity that day...
The Sega CD attempted to release a lot of the same games as the 3DO, i know because i owned both as a kid during the 90's. The problem with the Sega CD was that it was just a 16-bit attachment attempting to produce FMV games. The 3DO at least was far greater quality at 32-Bits and it didn't have the horrible grainy graphics and sound quality that the Sega CD had. The Sega CD also consistently failed destroying discs with the first exposure to the ring of death. So many destroyed discs. I'm painfully aware of how bad most of the 3DO games were, but i also owned the greatest ones on the console and the Sega CD should have been put on here instead of the 3DO.
when my grade 10 science teacher overheard my classmate saying he bought a Gizmondo he slowly turned his head to look back at him then smiled and shook his head. he gave him a special assignment that was a 1 page essay about why he regrets his purchase and what triggered his regret. if he humored him it would be a 100% towards his grade. not writing it wouldn't have hurt his grade though
You do know that the 90s brought us the SNES, PS1, Saturn, N64, Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Colour and Dreamcast, right? Just to inform you, and that's excluding the other good ones like the Neo Geo or the TurboGrafx-16.
In a way, the Hyperscan was ahead of its time....Look at modern gaming....$70 to buy games that are incomplete....DLC packs that SHOULD have been included and loot boxes you have to pay real money for. Hyperscan was releasing incomplete games and relied on booster packs of cards to unlock the entire game.....plus running the risk of getting duplicates of cards you already have or don't need...much like loot boxes....but the games were cheaper.....
I was curious if the Game Wave would show up here, and I was happy to see it wasn't, though a little surprised at the same time. Released by Canadian company ZapIt in 2005, the Game Wave used controllers that resemble tv remotes, with 4 coming with the console and 2 additional ones you could buy to make up to 6 players possible, and it also played DVDs as well. The Game Wave retailed for $99.99 US I believe, and the games sold for $20 apiece, though in the end only 13 games were ever produced for it, with the last ones coming out in 2007. I feel like the biggest things that hurt ZapIt are the fact that none of the games have the action we usually come to expect from video games, with all of the Game Wave's games being trivia and puzzle based and the like, as they were focused on family entertainment. There was even a Veggie Tales game on the Game Wave. Also, none of the Game Wave's games were rated by the ESRB, which meant most retailers wouldn't carry them. The main places you would find Game Wave games were places like Christian book stores, since they knew the games didn't contain violence. I only found out about the Game Wave when I went to a store with my then girlfriend and found one in a cardboard box marked for $20 with a set of 4 controllers and one game, and I bought it out of curiosity. I now own all the games for it, but I have a feeling that very few people even know that it exists.
Proud owner of the Atari Jaguar / Atari 5200 / NIntendo Virtual Boy / Actionmax / CDI / Gamecom / RCA system .... Tempest 2000 is great on Jaguar / I liked the Virtual Boy / I hated the 5200 controllers - whats interesting check out what Virtual Boy and Jaguar sell for now. Seems to be an interest.... I don't own the 3d0 I should of bought it long time ago now it goes for a lot too along with the Turbografx portable thing. Also remember seeing the laserdisc system still on the lookout for that. They are not something you want to spend thousands on but still pretty cool to own.
The Wario game on virtual boy looked like fun. Probably the only good game on that system. Why Nintendo has yet to remake it for newer consoles is mind boggling.
@@Eternyl_bliss-nj9seI wouldn’t have been able to use it. I tried a more recent device made by view master and I started getting dizzy within just a few minutes of using it.
I was waiting for the Virtual Boy on this list. I remember buying it when it went on clearance for $20. My experience with it makes me wonder why people later lined up to buy the Oculus. Focusing on a point a few inches from your eyes is just bad, and that doesn't change just because it's no longer red-tinted 1980s-looking graphics.
I had a Sega CD, a turbo graphics 16 that i bought off a movie store that had trouble renting it, and a neo geo. It was nice being a teen with no responsibilities
My friend had the 3DO and when it came out it was mind blowing. Wing Commander, Road Rash, Need For Speed looked better than even PCs could manage at the time. For a couple of years it really was the most impressive console around, it’s usp was ultimately its downfall: anyone could produce games for it without paying a license meant the 3DO company lost a lot of potential revenue, it didn’t have any exclusives so all it’s good games were ported to other 32bit consoles and there was zero quality control leading to some of the worst games ever seen
I didn't have an Action Max, but I did have a ViewMaster InterActive-Vision back in the day that worked off a similar concept. It was an interesting idea at the time, but it's easy to see why it failed. Also, I got to play a Virtual Boy once. I found the eye strain complaints to be a bit overblown, but the entire gaming experience as a whole was mediocre at best.
6:10 For me personally, I see Hyperscan as a Miss out opportunity to get a Mugen game on the system. Like you could you imagine what it'll look like. You can literally create characters and stages and export them as cards and then import them into your game by scanning them and they'll be there forever. You can get the chance to get other people's cards and scan them into your game too. Also, Have another thing for scanning Screenpacks in. Once it's scanned, the game gets a new look unless you wanna change. Like, why isn't that a thing?! Instead we get 5 games with the flopped console that aren't very good. Then again, You have to look everywhere to get the cards to get the character you want to get them so it's probably best to just have that be just a concept
Let's not forget the Nintendo Wii U only lasted like a year on the market. People laughing calling it the Nintendo Pee U because it stunk in sales and it being pretty much the same console as the Wii but updated leaving people to be unimpressed with the console.
Of all the consoles on this list the only I’ve heard of was the Virtual Boy console but I didn’t own one as for the other consoles on this list i literally never heard of them until now
My mom got me the Virtual Boy the week it came out. There were only 2 games worth playing on there. Mario Clash and WarioLand. (Not gonna lie, WarioLand was a great game) But yeah, the design sucked.
Didn’t watch this video yet, but I’m 100% for certain that the Atari Jaguar is going to be on this list. I just would like to take this time to point out the system’s positives and that it really isn’t as bad as many make it out to be. In fact, it’s actually quite a fun machine to own and it has some (dare I say) hidden gems that are exclusive to this system like Ultra Vortek, Super Burnout, Alien vs Predator, Skyhammer, Trevor McFur in the Crescent Galaxy, the Iron Soldier games, Cybermorph, Battlemorph, BattleSphere, Defender 2000, Protector, and several others.
The graphics on on a lot of the games were drug infliuenced - they took full advantage of the color palette - too bad they we don't see a lot more home brews for it.
Good vid, and my Dude, i own a Jaguar and CD-I Got one for a Birthday, and the other for a Xmas present and tbh, they aren't as horrible as everyone make's them out to be. yes they Blow by today's Console's. but at the time, they where kinda Amazing Edit, Forgot, for the CD-i i have the Three lousy Zelda games, Hotel Mario, Voyeur, and a few others i don't care to dig out of the box it is packed up in. The Atari Jag - Cybermorph, Aliens vs Predator, Tempest 2000, Kasumi Ninja, and a couple others like the CD-i i don't care to dig out
Some of those consoles are too advanced and had hi prices for their times. In some cases an advanced hardware with a too hi price didn't pay the effort to develop a good console.
The hyper scan wasn't a bad idea, we see the same type of technology being implemented all over the place, amiibo's and amiibo cards and disney infinity etc. It was bad timing.
i had an R-Zone. at the time, i liked it for the novelty and risk it took. pretty much a poor(er) man's version of Virtual Boy, looking back. my only complaint/nitpick was it was limited to the cartridges, since they were all just regular tiger handhelds squeezed down
Hyper scan is in every bit of console and PC gaming. The concept of booster packs for unlocking features sounds awfully like DLC of loot boxes ffs. Lol
the Commodore 64 was a huge success for the longest amount of time compared to any other "console" for 12 years. at least that was until recently. weird they put it on the list.
The Atari 5200 controller didn't break a lot. The Texas Instrument chip inside the console responsible for the controllers broke. So users would plug in multiple controllers and be left with the impression that the controllers don't work. They were still horrible controllers that didn't self-center.
I would say modern gaming systems. Buy expensive system, pay for internet. The expensive games are demos, that you have to spend more money to buy new levels. 2000 bucks later to play Xbox/PS5
The controller for the virtual boy was actually very comfortable and If you look at the game cube controller it has a lot of similarities….. Nintendo must have taken note.
Objection to OUYA's inclusion. It was great as a cheap way to develop for Android on TV with a controller. And I used it in my wedding proposal. We celebrated our 10 year anniversary this year

@henrlklinz Nice, but do you have the Rarest Amiga CD32 Add-on?... the Paint Bucket ;)~
@@Pegfoxx I loved Cannon Fodder.
Mine has a MPEG cartridge, SX-1 expansion unit, hard drive, 8mb and a beefy power supply.
Microcosm is mediocre.
Makes me Greatful I'm living in balance timeline of Video Game Console.
How so? None of these were popular, they all sold horribly and nobody cared about them. If anything, it's worse now because consoles are basically completely irrelevant.
@@koolaid33 it's just my opinion.
Also dishonorable mentioning:
Super A'can - Taiwan only video game console around 1995,
Casio Loopy - 1995,
Memorex VIS - 1992,
FM Town Marty - 1993,
V Smile - 2004
I remeber dropping coin on the Sega 32X and was slapping the hell out of myself soon after.
It was neat and an alternative to the nintendo chip solution and would have better games.
That guy from Laseractive sounds like TODD HOWARD wtf lol
So many of these I never heard of, great video!
My cousin had a 3DO and i thought it was the greatest technological achievement in human history
it was at the time
@@dougpopson5734 not really, it released just before the Saturn and ps1. And both where alot better
The 3DO appears on these lists all the time mostly trashed by people who never played them. It’s easy to look back now and say how bad it was but it predated ps1 and some titles were really good. Still has the best version of road rash to this day
@@solid_justice5855”at the time” meaning when it came out it was the best for a few years
I had a 3DO. I enjoyed playing Road Rash.
I remember as a kid having the Commodore 64. I remember playing Beach Head, Herzog Zwei, Spy Hunter and Bump and Jump.
I dont even think you can constitute the "souljagame" as a game console, when it was just emulation.
I remember wanting the r-zone so badly after being reminded it existed.
Amiga CDTV, CD32, Memorex VIS, and ViewMaster Interactive deserve to be on the list before the Atari 5200. Heck, the Atari XE deserves to be on there before the 5200. It wasn't a great console, but it runs circles around all of those.
I REMEMBER ACTION MAX!!!! FINALLY, SOMEONE BROUGHT THIS UP!!!🤩
I remember when I was a kid my R-Zone died so I made it into a DBZ scouter.
The 3do was an underrated system, that I loved back in the day.
I was sooo close to backing the OUYA... dodged a bullet there.
I still have my HyperScan stashed around here somewhere lmao. I played it like twice 💀
back when i was a kid in the late 70's early 80's. my mom & dad owned the rca studio ii. we only had 2 games for it. we had blackjack & math
Im glad my parents got me an NES and we had a Windows PC. Best of both worlds of games and quality game play back then. DOS was king
The problem with Ouya is (1)it uses a custom android version; and (2)just attach a gamepad to any android phone then it becomes a hand-carry console already
"I like pie! I like to have pie every day!"
As a kid I was blown away by Star Fox and Killer Instinct(Arcade). My brother rented the 3DO, and I wasn't impressed.
ahhh the nineties..... edgy commercials and most of the worst gamming consoles
You do know that the 90s brought us the SNES, PS1, Saturn, N64, Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Colour and Dreamcast, right? Just to inform you, and that's excluding the other good ones like the Neo Geo or the TurboGrafx-16.
@@koolaid33 watch again the video and from the list most of the consoles are from which decade?? go learn text interpretation dude.
How much did Google pay you not to put the Stadia in the top 20?
It was the bes game - I think the system is cool I am a fanboy of 3D tech though.
I miss several consoles on this list:
Capcom CPS Changer
Casio Loopy
Commodore CDTV
Google Stadia
Hartung GameMaster
NEC PC-FX
Zeebo
I had a Sega CD, a turbo graphics 16 that i bought off a movie store that had trouble renting it, and a neo geo. It was nice being a teen with no responsibilities
I had Doom, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Pebble Beach Golf Links and I felt that's all I really needed for the 3DO
Can you make a video of games consoles we never heard of
My friend had the 3DO and when it came out it was mind blowing.
Stadia should at least get an honorable mention.
That's not a console, that's a service
The Commodore 64 GS had one awesome game on it. It was Navy Seals, I still have a go every so often it's rad as the kids used to say back then hahaha!
AVGN reviews Commadore 64, Atari 5200, Panasonic 3DO, Atari Jaguar and CD, Amegia CD-32 and Virtual Boy
I knew Stadia would crash and burn from the get-go.
I have a boxed Tapwave Zodiac. That's another one that failed. But I'm glad I have one.
Let's not forget the Nintendo Wii U only lasted like a year on the market. People laughing calling it the Nintendo Pee U because it stunk in sales and it being pretty much the same console as the Wii but updated leaving people to be unimpressed with the console.
Just think: every AAA game company saw the HyperScan's business model to expand games AND actually thought it was a GREAT idea!...
Oh, sweet summer child...
After watching a number of people's reviews of the console, I'd love to try one.
The graphics on on a lot of the games were drug infliuenced - they took full advantage of the color palette - too bad they we don't see a lot more home brews for it.
Wii U deserves a dishonorable mention here. NO whatsoever improvement from the great Wii vonsole. Just get a 3DS XL if you want a handheld to go with.
Or the switch, witch basically is the Wii U 2.0
Good vid, and my Dude, i own a Jaguar and CD-I Got one for a Birthday, and the other for a Xmas present and tbh, they aren't as horrible as everyone make's them out to be. yes they Blow by today's Console's. but at the time, they where kinda Amazing
Edit, Forgot, for the CD-i i have the Three lousy Zelda games, Hotel Mario, Voyeur, and a few others i don't care to dig out of the box it is packed up in.
The Atari Jag - Cybermorph, Aliens vs Predator, Tempest 2000, Kasumi Ninja, and a couple others like the CD-i i don't care to dig out
The commadore 64 had great sims for the time. Microprose made many titles that were amazing. Example F-111 Stealth fighter.
I hope SouljaGame is on the list!
Edit: Was not disappointed! 😂
Thank god the RCA Studio was in this list
Some of those consoles are too advanced and had hi prices for their times.
In some cases an advanced hardware with a too hi price didn't pay the effort to develop a good console.
OI, STRAIGHT AWAY the commodore 64, I have that and still have it, it was great here in the UK. Though mine was the cassette version.
The hyper scan wasn't a bad idea, we see the same type of technology being implemented all over the place, amiibo's and amiibo cards and disney infinity etc. It was bad timing.
I played a lot of the lcd tiger games……only one game, except for Bo Jackson’s, baseball and football in one game
i had an R-Zone. at the time, i liked it for the novelty and risk it took. pretty much a poor(er) man's version of Virtual Boy, looking back. my only complaint/nitpick was it was limited to the cartridges, since they were all just regular tiger handhelds squeezed down
How Soulja Boy hasn't been put in prison for blatant fraud yet is beyond me. He's literally the single biggest scam artist in video game history.
Tommy's Amico 😅💩
*IYKYK*
I’ve never even heard of most of these consoles.
Just because a console is obscure, doesn't mean it's the worst
I would say modern gaming systems. Buy expensive system, pay for internet. The expensive games are demos, that you have to spend more money to buy new levels. 2000 bucks later to play Xbox/PS5
This list is pretty much a shopping list for retro game collectors.
