    Giles tells the Demon Dude "thank you for coming to me" at the end - so I think we're meant to realize that after the Mayor contacted Demon Dude to rob Angel of his soul, Demon Dude went running to Giles and was like, "Hey old buddy, you'll never GUESS what I was just asked to do. Also, it looks like you've got a rogue Slayer on your hands. Just FYI." So then Giles, Buffy, and Angel came up with their plan to play along and get as much info as they could re: the Mayor's plans.

      @@ronaldfasshauer4390 I think that moment made him happy but was tempered with his feelings of concern about being with her/not wanting to take advantage/the stress of the near death situation they had just gone through with the Judge. So it wasn't "perfect" happiness. I think the same is true in real life - anxieties, thinking about the past, thinking about the future, guilt etc can temper being purely in the moment and feeling total peace.

    Willow learning Xander slept with Faith and then like 2 episodes later basically calling Faith a massive hoe bag is such an underappreciated little bit of character writing for Willow and a follow up to the lingering feelings they had earlier in the season. Because it totally feels kind of over the top judgmental and a little out of character for her in this episode until you remember Willow was crying in the bathroom over finding Xander had slept with her not 2 episodes earlier.

    Faith probably learned the whole "Angel lost his soul" story through Xander, or a conversation that included Xander. Given his bias - and the parts of the story he would probably fixate on - coupled with Faith and Mayor understanding next to nothing about being a "white hat", they just didn't get it, and just assumed "giving him the happy" would turn Angel bad.

But the movie does not actually exist. I was just pondering the whole Jesus thing in this episode. Buffy is tied up, beaten and says "I am". Long story short that is a very Jesus thing to say. Among other things saying that is a reason he was condemed by the jewish council. There is also a passage later when he talks about them not really having any power over him unless it was given to them. It all fits, but it doesnt fit well. The judas kiss does lend it some strength. Im not sure if they are trying for a parallell here.

    There's good reason people always mention the distinction between Angel and Angelus when it comes to David's acting. How even in total character (same outfit, show, situations) you can tell by just his mannerisms and speech which he is portraying. It's so hard to believe there is not really a literal "switch" that is flipped to make that happen.
    Unrelated to Angel specifically, just ideas surrounding this episode, I can't wait to see how you react to some of the upcoming stuff, both near and far 😱

      He *was* left lying unconscious in the street for an indeterminate time where any passing vamp could have decided to have a quick unresisting snack, so the Scoobies can probably consider themselves lucky on this occasion that the ruse didn't result in a dead or undead Xander. Perhaps though Angel was willing to risk that to get the information they needed, given The Zeppo showed that Xander brings little to the table from the Scoobies' perspective. Have you listened to the episode commentary on 'Bad Girls' by its writer, Doug Petrie?
      "And here we've got the growing lesbian subtext between these two, which was always fun to play with. And Eliza was always kind of pushing the sexuality, and no-one remembered to stop her from doing that, which we're all very happy about."
      ...
      "And there's the heart. Again, lesbian subtext; but the heart with the stake through it [...] It's kind of a romantic image at the same time. Because it's almost a seduction. Faith is very sexy and she's saying, "Come play with me". "
      So even if Joss didn't see the subtext, his own writing team and actors were merrily adding it themselves...

    This stretch of season three is just a murderer's row of great episodes. From Bad Girls (when Faith kills the deputy mayor) all the way to the finale, there's barely a bad scene, much less a bad episode. It maybe doesn't quite touch the highest heights of season two (Surprise/Innocence and the finale), but every single episode is at a tremendously high standard.

  • @stargazer1682
    @stargazer1682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    At the end Giles tells the... mystic (?) something like, "thank you for coming to me," or something to that effect; which seems to suggest that after the Mayor summoned him to ask him to remove Angel's soul, whoever or whatever that guy was, came to Giles and gave him the lowdown. I envision after that, Giles looped both Buffy and Angel in on what the Mayor was planning, since Angel would obviously have to be aware of how to act; and Buffy would invariably need to know how to respond (or rather, how not to respond). My guess would be that Angel and Buffy came up with "Buff" as a codeword that would tell her when everything was in motion.

      @Astlay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jaycievictory8461 The general story progression is my personal favourite, if you look at Buffy and Angel's arc in Season 2 and Buffy and Faith's here. How they start uneasy and almost hostile, grow closer at an exponential rate that culminates in a loss when they "turn evil". In a lot of ways, now that Bangel is no longer a temptative, new thing, with a stable dynamic, Faith occupies that narrative space.
      There are also some cool scenes that I see as parallels, like the jump into the nest in Bad Girls and into the water/ sewers in Surprise, but the season progression still takes the cake.

    I love how Faith's face purses at 11:00 when The Mayor indicates how proud he is of "my girl." It's like a little kid who's so excited that all their emotions just emerge at once in a weird "crinkle." It would make sense that she's such a daddy's girl after being abused by her mother for so long, and being lauded by such a person would make her giddy.

    The Mayor genuinely loves Faith, and feels paternally toward her. His sunny disposition is not an act - that's who he actually is. At the core he is a warm, cheerful, funny guy. You don't have to hiss and snarl and chew the scenery to be evil, you just have to do evil. Just like there's basically decent people who're grumpy and unpleasant all the time. I should know, I'm one of them.

  • @bverji
    @bverji 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think you are going the wrong direction with the sexual context. I don't think it is about sexuality rather that Faith is hyper sexualized and uses it as a tool. Not just the act itself but the subject matter. Her bluntness about the subject puts her in a position of power over others (particularly Buffy and Angel whose sexual past is a "touchy" subject) who tend to be embarrassed over the subject.

    i see on the patreon youre already into season 4 so this is kinda late but about Faith, when youre doing your psych analysis of her and saying that nothing good ever happens for her so her personality is what we get now, i think youre forgetting an aspect of her life that is really pivotal - she was also chosen by destiny to be a Slayer.
    thats pretty huge for her. i think its the biggest possible "good thing" that could have happened for her. she inherits a destiny and that makes everything she went through in life before that seem "worth it" in a way. so her heel turn is really understandable with how the Scoobies freeze her out, Giles makes no attempt to be involved with her on the level he is with Buffy, and all Faith really has left is the destiny she was handed but Buffy tries to take it away from her over a mistake. there was many opportunities for anyone at all to put in some effort to reach out to her before things went this route, but that never happened until The Mayor.

    I don't want to presume too much about Faith's history, but problematic hypersexuality is sometimes (emphasis on sometimes; this is not universally the case) a response to trauma. I don't know if she's so much in touch with her sexuality as relying on it as a means of control and source of validation.
    The Angel & Faith connection has to do with the ongoing addiction metaphor the show is doing. He's in recovery and she's spiraling.
