    1. Record first note/downbeat (KD) of first bar with quant on
    2. Turn quant off rest of recording

    I've been messing with recording just the kick on beat 1 and sometimes the snare in bar 4 using quantize (16/3!). That seems to establish a solid loop and a way to get no gap, then I'll fill / overdub in the rest non-quantized. I've found too, quantizing some chops to downbeats helps to avoid the "gap" in the loop as well. Definitely took some experimenting to get it right, but really dig the pattern sequencer for creating difference layers of a beat and jamming between them to come up with an arrangement. Also like creating variations on the drum loops I can switch between a couple pads to keep things evolving.

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice man. I've actually tried quantizing the first kick before but ran into problems with that as well, think it originally had it as recorded in the right place then just removed it or something, very weird stuff going on with it lol. I'm gonna try do a few more beats with it after the tips you and some others have left. Thanks a lot!

    Re, the issue with the gap, Ive found that recording the drums first and then adding the samples seems to solve this. The pattern sequencer isn’t the best but it has a quality all of its own and you just have to work round it! Hope this helps everyone!

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that can work. I find that doing the samples without quantise can also help massively to stop the gap as well as holding the last chop down for slightly longer than you think

      That is definitely a plus about the pattern select. Sometimes resampling leaves you with less space. You can layer the heck out of samples with the pattern select. I really should use it more often.

      What you said man. I’m sitting here trying to figure out how to stem out a song I made.
      Copy the pattern over to as many pads as I have active tracks and go and “edit” or erase everything except the stem.

  • @Randuski
    @Randuski 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yea the problem with the sequencer is more to do with the methodology of chopping on the sp. Everything is rough, and samples aren't chopped to an exact tempo. You really have to make sure you're last sample especially is long enough to cover the gap. With the way it's setup i don't use the sequencer. It's just a tiny bit too fiddly usually. It depends on your process

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips man completely agree! Definitely need to have another look into it at some point! For now I've mainly been doing treatment to the samples on the SP then importing them into Ableton to do all the arranging, works really nicely I think!

  • @jakefitzgxrald
    @jakefitzgxrald 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I use the pattern sequencer because I'm not very good at laying out drums and staying on tempo in my head. The one thing I don't like about it is what you said about the gap between loops. I thought it was just my drumming but now I know that it's just a flaw with the sequencer. Anyways thanks for sharing and great beat as usual!

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man yeah that gap is a huge flaw, it would actually use it a lot more if it wasn't for that! Still fun to have a play around with though. Glad to find out its not just me that hears it haha

      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool man yeah I think resampling and/or bouncing to an external device is the best way to get the wavey sound without any tecnical hold-ups! Like i mentioned I won't be switching after this experiment but people from a more structured music background might prefer to have a bit more control

    The gap still fits within the exact time signatures as your 4 bar loop. The reason why the gap exist is because it’s crucial that you let go of the pad right before the end of the loop or else the gap is recorded in. It takes precision and timing.

      spvidz I’m fairly new to the sp family, just got the 404 and my first attempts I ran into the gap issue using the sequencer, I’m pretty old school so i just wanted to defeat the issue by working with the discrepancy rather than against it. But most of these other methods I’ve read in the comments seem to have a more thought out process, you can tell who has aged well with these samplers. I will be trying everything I’ve read just to see how i can expand and implement others knowledge on the craft, this device is amazing. Thanks for building this community!

      @@spvidz so at the end of your tracks before they fade to silence, is there a strange glitch nose that happens?
      if so, that's because the DAW is in a higher bit rate than the SP and your loosing quality.

  • @SandcastleTheory
    @SandcastleTheory 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    That gap you're hearing is NOT the fault of the pattern sequencer. First of all, you opted to record without the quantize on, so it is absolutely on you if your samples aren't lining up perfectly with the sequencer's loop-point on playback. Secondly, unless you chop your samples perfectly, to a grid, at a given tempo, and then choose that exact same tempo for your sequence, you will either get a gap at the end of the sequence, or your samples will choke prematurely. Cheers!

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the problem must be at the start of the loop I will have to try quantising the first sample and beats to see if that changes anything, thanks!

    • @SandcastleTheory
      @SandcastleTheory 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@spvidz As an example, I use an SX for triggering ambient sample loops alongside a drum machine. The SX receives MIDI clock from the drum machine, but the samples are triggered by the 404's internal sequencer, recorded into patterns. However, I meticulously chop and warp my samples to the grid in Ableton, to the exact tempo, note division, and bar length they will later be used at, before loading them into the SP. The patterns on the SP are then recorded using quantize, and the samples loop seamlessly as expected! Now, if any of those samples were even so much as a fraction of a second too short, there would be gaps in the audio. When you use the resample method, and drum your patterns in free-hand, you can adjust your playing to compensate for the perceived tempo of your samples, and later crop the end of the sequence for a clean loop. The sequencer, on the other hand, is a robot, and it doesn't make exceptions for poorly prepared samples... ;) Cheers!

What I said above was meant only to illustrate that there is nothing wrong with the sequencer on the 404; and that the gap in the audio when the pattern loops, as observed in this video, is simply the result of "keeping it human" while attempting to use the sequencer to record an unquantized performance with unquantized samples, instead of recording using the resample method. I mentioned both methods, I did not advocate for either, and I certainly don't appreciate you calling me "preachy". At any rate, I was just answering a question; for which I was thanked, I might add. Cool! I started using the pattern sequencer because it allowed me to track out everything and adjust the levels at a later time if I needed to. Before that I used the resample method and would typically realize I lost detail on other speakers after the fact. I like your idea of using the daw, you play live with the tracks you recorded earlier and build onto it with a separate channel. Did I understand that right? Seems like a better work around than what I’m currently using.

    • @spvidz
      @spvidz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah thats a good point actually, the pattern maker is a lot less destructive, although maybe that's what I kind of like about resampling - there's no going back ha! So yeah what I basically do is record a drum loop onto a pad and then play my samples along to that live whilst recording in ableton. I then record that full beat back into my SP and then back into ableton again but this time doing some MFX on the fly like DJ looper etc. I find that workflow works best for me at the moment.
