You can’t overdub like a looper sadly. Pattern mode is best for that. The SP 555 actually has a looper feature which is pretty dope. As of layering you can do 32 voices which I can’t imagine ever getting close to. The sx used to cut your resampling all the time but they massively updated it for the MK2
@@spvidz ah ok. Well cant have it all. That gives me an interesting idea. I get that people are still into the old school hardware vibe of this, but Koala sampler on iOS does everything this does and more and has a faster workflow for a fraction of the price if you have an iOS device . You can get a perfect resampled loop from a pattern sequence with the press of a button, sample directly from TH-cam with TubeAU or from Spotify by screen recording. Why would you even want to work with SD cards in this day and age for samples? Nice video though.
It has a Hard Drive & an SD Slot. It has knobs, buttons, & pads. Its all 1 physical unit. When you put in the effort & practice the workflow is fast. You should give it a try.
Dont knock it until you try it. I have an ipad with all the great iOS music apps, but when I feel like making music I dont reach for the ipad, I go for the Digitakt or the M8 tracker. Hardware is different .
Koala sampler is great and I was considering jumping ship until this came out. Like the comments above have said the idea of spending even more time on a phone or iPad is really not appealing to me. I cooked up a few beats on koala on my phone and got sick of spending more time staring at the screen very quickly. Its all personal preference really. I agree with your points and have a lot of respect for the app, but having a hobby that doesn't involve staring at a screen is a huge bonus to me, as is having that tactile side of actually hitting pads and using dials etc.
Can you keep tracks separated? I.e. can you keep the bass and melody on separate pads from the drums and play them simultaneously on some kind of song/pattern mode? Or is that not how the SP-404 works? Mixing a full song down to stereo seems like a recipe for a massive mixing and mastering headache, hence my question.
Can you resample the pattern chain? If yes then you can probably get a chain of one pattern, set it to not repeat. Then you’d get your exact sample of your pattern. Also once the ‘pattern samples’ are in a mute group you could maybe use the sequencer to quantize the changes between them? Looking forward to getting my box and trying all this stuff out.
Annoyingly it doesn't seem that you can resample when you are chaining patterns. It enters a new mode where you hit 'sub-pad' to start the chain of patterns you have strung together. I'll keep looking but yeah it looks like you can't do that or that would have been a good work around. One idea could be to just have a pattern which has some silence sequenced in, then when resampling, trigger that manually after you have played the pattern you want resmapling. (it still queues patterns and plays them next automatically) That way you can easily find the end point in the wave-form editor
Hey when you get a chance, I've been wondering about something. I wanna record vocals on this thing. Can i use autopitch, and also bus 1 & 2 on the vocals, and sample that all to a pad? If I'm recording long takes of vocals, having to resample to add effects over and over would be tedious, so I'm wondering how many effects i can have on my vocals that will be recorded to the pad. I assume that bus 3 & 4 aren't recorded. It sounds like they happen at the end of the process, after recording and only on the master. Anyways, great vid dude 👍🏻👍🏻
Seems like you can apply effects on the input without having to "bake" them into a sample. But I suppose if you want to assign more effects than the allocated ones on the input, you'd have to sample your performance, re-add effects, resample, repeat...
From what I can gather you can have one input fx 100%, then of the 4 BUS fx, I only seemed to be able to stack one from BUS 1 & 2 but then it also allowed me to stack both BUS 3 & 4. Not sure why I could only stack 1 of 1 & 2 it might be me doing it wrong but thats as much as I know right now.
Really looking forward to getting mine. With the FX Buses, if you assign an FX Bus to a sample, do the effects on the front panel work in conjunction with both them and BUS 3 and 4 or do the FX buses override the the effects buttons on the front panel? It isn't clear in the online manual.
@@spvidz I have read that section of the online manual several times and it certainly isn't clear in my head but I don't have the hardware in front of me to experiment with and so any pearls of wisdom you can impart would be much appreciated 😁.

Why do my pads keep getting quieter and quieter when resampling? I've got fixed velocity ON but whenever I resample something it's way quieter than the pad I recorded from, I have no idea why
Strange. Are you on the latest firmware? (1.14) and also are you using any FX in bus slots 3 and 4? They could be affecting your overall volume maybe? I've just resampled a drum loop 4 times to test it and they were all the same volume
@@Ross_Antonich I didn't update my SP's firmware but I think that would fix it as that's pretty much the only solution. Apparently you need a SD card to update the mk2 and I didn't have one so I never tried. Why can't it just be updated through the usb C connection to the computer? Smh
Does anyone know a fix for me? I just resampled some patterns on a pad and it worked fine. Now i want to resample this pad again to put some more fx on it. But when i'm done recording it and want to play it back, the display would show only a flat line and i get no noise at all?!

Great videos .. random question though … is the power adapter different to the old sp404a adapter ? I ask because I have a car cigarette adapter to sp404a lead that I use for sp in the car …. Wondering if it will work on the mk2 ?
Hey my sp sometimes doesn't record when i resample, it just records silence, do you know what it might be?, i restart de sp404 and it records normally. maybe it's a bug
I think the solution to that is turn off 'count-in' using shift + 10. You might want to make sure you are on the latest software too because I think they put a fix in for that
My guess is no. I'm not sure how you would trigger samples on the SP whist also recording. It may be possible with resample but I don't actually have a pedal to try myself. One work around would be to use the pedal between your recording source and the device so that it has the FX on when it comes into the SP.
not completely sure what you mean but you can pan left and right and also there is a DJ mode where you can fade between beats/samples indefinitely. I'll be doing a vid about it soon
Hey man, just letting you know that I think your proof doesn't actually prove what you're trying to prove. If we assume that the main sample is stereo and the drums are mono, you're using max 4 channels/voices at a time during your demonstration - something that the old SP404s were capable of. If the drum samples are stereo, you're using max 6 channels/voices at a time which is better than the old SPs but your wording gave off the impression that you were using more channels/voices than that. The old SPs used to cut out when the simultaneous channel/voice count was over 4, but your mute groups take care of the overlap from the main samples in your case. Not doubting the fact that the MK2 is capable of playing 32 channels/voices at the same time at all, just wanted to give you a heads up in case you misunderstood what that meant. Great job on the videos so far, loving the MK2 content you've been putting out, it has all been very informative!
Hey man thanks for the info, all the sounds in the vid are stereo including the drums. Definitely worth noting about the mute group but even without it i've still not had it cut out yet no matter what I throw at it! I've had every pad playing at the same time on a bank and it still captured everything without a hitch!
@@spvidz Don't get me wrong, I have no doubts at all that it wouldn't cut out. I just wanted to point it out in case you thought you were demonstrating something that you weren't. 6 channels/voices is still more than the previous SPs but it maybe doesn't prove your point as well as you intended it to. Again, love your channel and what you do dude, keep it up

Good question, I've never tried that. I will think about putting together a video about chromatic mode as I'm getting quite a lot of questions about it
Great videos .. random question though … is the power adapter different to the old sp404a adapter ? I ask because I have a car cigarette adapter to sp404a lead that I use for sp in the car …. Wondering if it will work on the mk2 ?
Should do man, its still the same 9v job and my old one works with it too!
@@spvidz Yay .. nice one, thanks for replying.
Where can we get those dope knobs?
DJ Tech Tools
Does this have step sequencing? If not, I'm hoping with that 4x4 pad grid it'll arrive in an update?
It doesn't have step sequencing no. I have no idea if Roland have plans to introduce that sorry man but it would be a cool feature!
very nice
Thanks 🙏
Do you know anywhere I could get more info about the DJ mode? I'm curious about the external audio and how it functions with that mode
I will be doing a video soon my guy!

Any way to use resample to filter out all highs on a sample and record to a new pad for chopping up baselines?
There are multiple ways to do that. Filter+Drive, Isolator. I recommend spending some time getting familiar with the MFX
@@spvidz tnx, i got familiar with the mfx just not the resample features, got it now!
So if you put in rechargeable batteries can you charge them via USB-c?
No i don't think that will work. You could use a powerbank instead to power it I think thats the best move
Why not just copy and save the sample????
Are there any proloaded samples when I buy this beast?
There are yes, I deleted them straight away lol
@@spvidz Haha. For testing only.
Yep , but please delete them and make your own amazing music
Hey my sp sometimes doesn't record when i resample, it just records silence, do you know what it might be?, i restart de sp404 and it records normally. maybe it's a bug
Is this the mk2? Are you on version 2.0 of the software?
@@spvidz yes
I do wish Roland would allow file naming on the machine.
whenever i resample anything i only get what i play at the time, no “background”
i'm probably stupid but i press resample and it says "select a pad for recording" but i can't select a pad
I think the solution to that is turn off 'count-in' using shift + 10. You might want to make sure you are on the latest software too because I think they put a fix in for that
can you resample out to an fx box an back in?
My guess is no. I'm not sure how you would trigger samples on the SP whist also recording. It may be possible with resample but I don't actually have a pedal to try myself. One work around would be to use the pedal between your recording source and the device so that it has the FX on when it comes into the SP.
Where’d you get the knobs?
DJ Tech Tools Chromacaps
Is it possible to crossfade loop?
not completely sure what you mean but you can pan left and right and also there is a DJ mode where you can fade between beats/samples indefinitely. I'll be doing a vid about it soon
not sure if i should get a ps5 or this
Depends if you want play samples or games I guess. I choose to get them both.
Again, love your channel and what you do dude, keep it up
Don't think most people will have one of those for a while
pre-orders saying 1 - 2 months yeah. COVID backlogs wont help either. Can't wait for people to actually have them and start using them
@@spvidz yes really can't wait to get my hands on one. Temporary moved from 2000xl to sp404 sx but the mk2 looks the full deal 😍.
