I wonder how many people even remember that the character of Zorro existed, let alone that Puss in Boots was a parody of Antonio Banderas' recent depiction of him in The Mask of Zorro (1998.) The European fairy tale character Puss in Boots was a talking cat famous for killing an ogre by tricking him into transforming into a mouse and eating him. He was known for his deceitful intelligence and ability to manipulate people, and the strange habit of walking upright in a man's boots. He was often depicted as well-dressed, sometimes with the feathered hat, but the cape, sword, fighting style, and association with Spanish cultures all came from Banderas and Zorro. There are a lot of little details that point out that the King was indeed the same prince who turned into a frog from the fairy tale. His clothing and the decorations around the castle and in King & Queen's bedroom have lots of green on them and the picture by their bedside has the King walking on a bridge above a lily pond, the Queen's comment on "their first kiss by the lily pond", the female frog recognizing him at the bar, Fairy Godmother mentioning how she helped him get his own "Happily Ever After".

The part where Mongo tells Gingie, "Be good!" is from a mini-series that came out around the time of this, called "Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story". You learn the giant that Jack supposedly kills had a son, and he actually slips, and the son catches the father. Right before the Giant Father falls to his death, he tells his son to be good (become the friendly giant) in the same slow, monotone that Mongo does.
My favorite visual gag in any of these movies is when they show that the police have pulled over the Headless Horseman, and are making him do the field sobriety test where he has to touch his nose.
This is certainly a film I appreciate much more as an adult for all the gags that went over my head in '04. Also had another phenomenal dvd extra in the original release too, with Far Far Away Idol w/Simon Cowell as the judge
Fun fact: in the Polish dub, when the giant gingerbread man dies his last words are "drink milk". Which my mom tells me was the tagline for a bunch of health PSAs that were on Polish TV around the time Shrek 2 came out
Shrek 2 not only my favorite film in the franchise but it’s easily one of the greatest animated/Sequels of all time. Also it introduce my favorite character in the whole franchise aka Puss in Boots.
41:15 fun fact, when I was in college one of the producers for this soundtrack gave a guest lecture and explained that David Bowie only agreed to have this song used as long as he was able to record a new version with the female artist. So it is actually him, just a remix with new vocals. Pretty cool.
I think it's mostly a fan theory, I don't know if it's been confirmed any, but a popular theory is that The Fairy God Mother was likely the one who cursed Fiona. Which when you think in that context, she may be the very reason all the major fairy tales exist, she basically made her racket by basically false staging events to work out into being the fairy tales we expect.
One thing I noted rewatching this movie is how well the references are utilised. They're funny if you get them, but they also fit in the scene seamlessly even if you don't get the reference.
Fun fact the filmmakers confirmed that Dragon had scenes in the movie that were cut do to test screenings, and also because the story bit would add to much bloat to the movie but they did say she turned a Pegasus thanks to the potion and she would of helped watch the house while they were gone and fly the friends to help rescue Shrek and co.
I always thought it was just the bubbles popping that left the water droplets when she dies, never considered the tears that summoned the fairy godmother in those bubbles!! Mind blown.
The fact Shrek and Fiona genuinely try and make it work is incredibly heartwarming. Shrek comes to meet her family but messes up, so he tries to befriend Fiona’s parents and understand them and win them over and make up for his mistake; meanwhile, Fiona, when she calms down and takes the time to genuinely *think* realises Shrek has genuinely tried even if he’s made mistakes, but her father will *never* accept Shrek, so she meets him on his level and decides that they’re going home. He’s tried for her, but her father has not, so she picks her side - the Ogre she married. He tried to comprise for her, so now *she* is compromising for him.
I remember around when season 2 of Game Of Thrones aired everyone posted out that Jaime Lannister looked exactly like Prince Charming from Shrek 2. Clearly cutting that pretty boy hair style is what turned him good.🤣🤣🤣🤣
it has finally been long enough to be forgotten. So many reactors have mentioned when Charming first reveals his hair how he is Jaime Lannister, but that connection is gone.

I hope to god that at the opening of every Shrek reaction, by asking "When did Shrek come out?" and Rick taking out his phone to look it up.
Rick's "for business purposes, it *has* to wear off, right?" killed me 😂
What's funny is that, from the one example we know about (the Happily Ever After potion), he's right! The Happily Ever After potion wore off by default, and could only be sealed by kissing your true love by midnight. For all we know, they might _all_ be temporary by default unless you do something extra to make them permanent!
@@NoriMori1992 ...and not telling the customer what they need to do would be a solid business strategy. then they come back annoyed and you are like "oh, didn't I tell you, you also had to find a 3-legged frog and teach it to play the samba before sunset" and you sell them the potion again... and again because who can fulfill that extra requirement in a day?? :D
Eric, when Game of Thrones came out, a lot of people took one look at Jaime Lannister and said "Oh my gosh, it's Prince Charming from Shrek!" People have done side-by-side comparison memes. It's uncanny.
"You still look like an ass to me." remains one of my favorite movie lines ever.
Jennifer Saunders absolutely killed I need a hero, and the credits cover by Frou Frou is a mood on its own
I like how dark and ominous the Frou Frou version is. It sounds like it should’ve come after a much darker, epic film, and elevates Shrek 2 even more.
No idea y but once the credits rolled when I went to the theater to rewatch this on a theater screen after 20 years I started tearing up also ngl that movie remix to your so true just makes that song better. But I do wish it would’ve been a remix to the entire 3 minute song so it wasn’t so short
@@ghostphoenix666 that nostalgic feeling😩🫶🏽
The wolf in the bed is always so funny to me idk why
It’s interesting to see how many people watched Puss in Boots but never watched Shrek. It’s like watching Lightyear without having watched Toy Story. I get that some people didn’t watch Shrek, grew up and had children during the release of Puss in Boots but still
Shrek 2 is one of best sequels ever made.
"Once you watch Shrek, you have to watch them all" - The writers
When I was younger, I remember Antonio Banderas from The Mask of Zorro and The Mariachi and was so excited when I heard his voice. It was when I realized he was Puss in Boots; heaving furballs, drinking milk, grooming himself, and being caught with catnip, the eyes, etc. Even now, when I see Antonio, I relate him to Puss. Always and forever.
Jennifer Saunders (Fairy Godmother) KILLED IT singing "I Need A Hero"! I remember this movie was how I was first introduced to the song and I absolutely loved it! 💜 💚
In Puss’ original story, he’s known for killing an evil Ogre by tricking it to turn into a mouse. Don’t know how that works in his own series and films.
only just realised when the king says "from a swamp how original" as he was frog and the princess. and he came from the swamp mocking in a way that shrek wasnt the first
I always laugh at the pepper grinder bit. It's one of my favorite bits from the series.
Eric and Aaron I love how you two were bobbing your heads in sync with the music at 3:52 😂
I like to think thats exactly how Eddie Murphy would be on a roadtrip
1:49 Eric is still traumatized by the deaths of Mama Bear, Farquad, and caught the masturbation joke in that scene 😂
Standout performance in this HAS to be Jennifer Saunders as Fairy Godmother, she absolutely slays Holding Out for a Hero in one of the greatest final sequences of all time, absolute gem of a Comedian and Actress
Can’t wait for your upcoming reactions on “Godzilla minus one” and “ Kungfu Hustle “… those will make my best days in a while
Y’all NEED to do a video reacting to the Shrek Karaoke Dance Party from the first one and then Shrek Far Far Away Idol from the second. Those are both essential viewing when watching the first two Shrek movies!
It’s great how a simple zoom in made Eric’s look at 11:25 so much funnier😂
"LOOK OUT SHREK, HE'S GOT A PIECE!!!" 💚 💜
41:21 David Bowie did perform in this version of Changes :) he’s just not super audible in the film but in the soundtrack he’s perfectly audible
From what I heard, it was originally just a cover, but Bowie heard it and liked it so much he wanted to do a duet.
13:06
donkey: did I miss
Shrek: no you got them
that kills me every reaction 😂
Classic 🤣 Poor shrek 🥜
at 20:28 in the spanish version Puss says "for you baby, I could be Batman"
I only learned recently that the actress who voiced the queen is Mary Poppins
Yes it’s Julie Andrews. Most people think playing Maria in Sound of Music is her Most famous role.
The best way to describe Shrek 2 is Dreamworks’ Guess who’s coming to Dinner with some fairy tale references.
Also, Holding out for hero is one of the greatest climatic scenes in cinema history.
I love Eric being so conflicted watching thr fairy godmother. Like its like going to another earth with an evil version of his mom. Like you look like her, but you dont feel like her
“He croaked” 🐸
The one thing I’m shocked the sequels never touched on is the witch that cursed Fiona. I really expected her to come back as a future villain.
Wasn’t ‘the witch’ the godmother? It was her plan on how to make Charming the king
Well there’s gonna be a Shrek 5
@@bandlover341Honestly, if not for how great the new puss in boots was, I would say I kinda don't want it.
shrek 4 was a REALLY good wrap up, so I'm not sure if 5 can leave it at a note that is even half as satisfying.
For some reason the thing that makes me laugh the hardest at this movie is the "cops" using PEPPER GRINDERS instead of pepper spray XD
The white bronco easter egg gets me to this day 😂
Happy 20th Anniversary to one of the greatest DreamWorks movies ever! IT'S SUPER AWESOME!!!!!
And Jennifer Saunders NAILED IT singing Holding Out For A Hero, and the whole sequence is still one of the greatest in animation history!!
This brought back the memories of playing Shrek 2 at summer camp 😂. The potion stealing scene and the finale 😭
The I Need A Hero sequence will forever be the best sequence in cinema
One thing I noted rewatching this movie is how well the references are utilised. They're funny if you get them, but they also fit in the scene seamlessly even if you don't get the reference.
Now Eric shall realize how truly necessary Shrek 2 was!
Between this and Empire Strikes Back and The Dark Knight I’d say it’s the best sequel to a movie ever. Also has the best cover of ‘I need a hero’.
I gotta admit, knowing all the stuff we know now, Puss in Boots being introduced as Shrek’s assassin is really dope lore in the universe of Shrek.
This is inarguably the best sequel ever made. The internet and society decided this. No sequel ever tops this film.
Mind blown.
Finally, Blind Wave reacts to Peak Fiction.
In the Puss and Boots fairy tale, the cat kills and ogre, so having him being hired to assassinate Shrek was so clever.
Finally The Best SHREK Movie is here
The fact Shrek and Fiona genuinely try and make it work is incredibly heartwarming.
Clearly cutting that pretty boy hair style is what turned him good.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Eric’s face at the donkey/dragon baby reveal was perfect 😂
One of the greatest films ever made. Genuinely.
33:05 the old crusade injury joke is also probably a reference to Monty Python and the holy Grail because, ya know, the crusades
And John Cleese who played the King is a member of Monty Python
“The Holding Out for a Hero” scene is one of the most epic scene in cinema history, up there with the Ride of the Rohirrim in the Pelennor
"Theyll write your name on the bathroom wall" is a crazy ass line for a kids movie and i love it 😂😂
So many Friday nights in fall 2004 after this came out on DVD, we’d come home from school and watch until Friday night pizza arrived. ❤
it has finally been long enough to be forgotten. So many reactors have mentioned when Charming first reveals his hair how he is Jaime Lannister, but that connection is gone.
"Stallion Baby!!!" 😂😂😂
Classic Movie + Great Wave Crew Reaction = 💯💯💯
Shrek 2 is legit one of the funniest animated movies ever, it threads the line of being for kids.
Puss is essentially the Inigo Montoya of Shrek 2.
