What are Map Tiers? - Rocket Jumping Extra Credit

  • Having knowledge of how maps tiers work can help you gauge how the jumping community perceives the relative difficulties of different techniques and maps. Be careful you don't place too much emphasis on tiers, because individual experience will always be difficult for everyone. Take all of this with a grain of salt - both the tier a map is agreed to have and especially the relative difficulty I assigned to maps within the same tier.
    Oh, and I should address a related topic: Players don't have tiers, maps do. People will call themselves "a T3 jumper", for example, if they've done a few T3 maps and feel comfortable with them, but there's nothing standard or official about this. Introducing yourself with your tier can lead to a hyper-focus on your skill level which can damage your mentality, slow your growth, and lessen the amount of fun you have. You have been warned.

    The biggest hurdle I find going from t3 to t4 is that it's no longer adequate to simply perform the skills a jump asks of you. You have to perform them precisely. Sometimes I enjoy the challenge, but other times (looking at you stair pogos) I get annoyed because my speed/height aren't perfect.

    This is pretty great to know. I'd always just hop into a server with a random jump map going with no prior knowledge of tiers and whatnot. My best go was doing 2 of the courses in 4starters, but I agree with the statement at the end, as every couple of months I'll return to jump_beef and see how quickly I can do it, or how many less attempts it takes to take on one or two of the jumps that will halt me for a couple minutes. Also so grateful to know jump_competitive exists. Thank you!

    • @Firestabber
      @Firestabber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Katto, the best jumper in the world when it comes to t6 prefire maps, made his own list at one point. As far as I know it's the only list out there. I have a few disagreements with it - some maps are considered significantly easier/harder than I think they should be (which makes sense, a higher level of skill can adjust your perception of difficulty). Most of the time, people who need a list just need a list of the easier t6 maps. Those who need to start distinguishing further between the other t6's tend to be connected enough with the jumping community to get personal recommendations from other jumpers. That assumption could be wrong though. After all, if a person isn't connected to the community, by definition they wouldn't be able to tell the community that they are lacking a useful resource.

    According to several high level jumpers I've played with on tempus, quints are generally said to be t4 and as of yet I've yet to play a t3 that has a proper quint. Most are quintable but can be done with just a quad. (I'm not certain about renard last however)
    Also so sad that 3 of the 4 t5s i've completed are low t5 :((

    • @Firestabber
      @Firestabber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, quints tend to be high t3, but t4 and even t5 if they're tight enough. Most t3 quints are loose enough to make with a pretty good quad. Don't worry that the t5's you've done are on the easier end - it means you've been doing a good progression of difficulty on the maps you're playing. And even if I'm listing them as easier, they're still t5's.

    I prefer jurf and mid tier maps, where you'll learn useful skills and how to control yourself...
    I get that people love the challenge and satisfaction of syncing like 7 rockets but you're never going to do that in a game

    • @Firestabber
      @Firestabber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I totally get that, felt the same way myself for a while too. Turns out doing those jumps teaches you a really precise and accurate sense of timing, spacing, and control of your character, though, so even if you never get to pull off that stuff while doing pvp, it still helps in some ways. Of course, if your primary focus is competitive rather than jumping, choosing to spend too much time working on rocket jumping is a mistake when you can put that time into other skills. Eventually, the "challenge and satisfaction" of doing hard jumps won me over and I found myself rocket jumping all the time rather than playing other stuff.

      I've heard people say those maps are for sure t10, and I've also heard people say nincompoop is for sure *not* t10. Tiers are estimations anyway, especially for what people say in the t10 scale. And yeah, the list of maps I made could have stuff traded in/out. I'd probably actually prefer the t5's without littleman and with soar instead. I didn't want to linger forever on exactly what maps I listed, so I just settled. Some of the suggestions are making me wish I mentioned other maps though :P

    • @zagrfige

      hanami is definately t10 intended but there's so much cheese for the map that it's t9, bangarang is debatable, I mean, compare it to the other prefire maps like rick and nincompoop and the records on those maps, slox86 goes way faster on bangarang. I've even heard people say nincompoop is t9 and bangarang is t8 (Bonzi, a completion main, has jump_nincompoop)
