Damn, way back in 95 or 96, during a meet & greet in France, I asked Matthew if they needed another guitar player. He said no (duh). And now they got one. I guess I was 20 years too early =)
Great guys! Great band! I was working at a Movie Trailer production company in L.A. and I guess for promotional reasons, Nada Surf quite literally gave us a private concert on a really nice small outdoor patio! I think there were about 15-20 of us watching them play. They played my request "Always Love," one of my favorite songs from ANY band, and they were SUPER nice and very friendly.
I live in Tokyo. Edwards guitars usually have Seymour Duncans in them. Quite often it's the SH-4 JB in the bridge and SH-2n Jazz in the neck but that differs depending on the guitar. Anyway, there's a high chance that the Les Paul in this Rig Rundown also has Duncans in it.
I like my Bacchus BLP classic. Also resonant as hell. True story - Saw Matt Caws on the subway in NYC once, looked like he was nervous on his way to a date. I didn't want to say anything but threw on Hyperspace the old ipod back then.. cool moment to self. But yeah my Bacchus needed real hand wound pickups. Put Sigil hand wound PAF. CTS 500k pots, PIO caps vintage... Dr. Z amp with built in attenuation though. I have a hot plate sitting in a box I found it really squashes my tone.
12 gauge!! I use 7s (admittedly that is light but if it's good enough for BB King and \ZZTop it good enough for me. Anyway I only recently dicovered this band and I love 'em.
It’s funny to me how people are always surprised that Doug Gillard uses a Dual Rec. It’s really sad that most people seem to think that Recs are only for high gain crap. Recs have the most amazing clean to mild breakup tone, just like all Mesa’s. It’s even more sparkly and “chimey” than a Fender, pretty hi-fi sounding. Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard are masters at getting really Fendery tones with Gibson guitars, and part of that is using high headroom, super clean amps. The Dual Rec clean channel is just that, and it sucks that they aren’t thought of more in that light. Listen to the GBV album Isolation Drills. Doug’s 70’s black beauty through his Dual Rec shines on that album so much.
Hmmm. It's my understanding that the only true "lawsuit" guitars are the 70's Ibanez Les Pauls because they were the only company to actually be sued by Gibson. The other copies are just "(insert brand name) Les Paul"
We publish all our videos on PremierGuitar.com first with photos and then push them live on TH-cam a week afterwards: www.premierguitar.com/articles/24884-rig-rundown-nada-surf. (Later today we'll publish it to the TH-cam masses.)
It's funny that he credits AC/DC tone for being clear and then says he'd rather use an attenuator than the guitar volume because it "loses" something-yet Angus has his volume rolled back for that tone. /essay
THAT WOULD BE COOL BUT I BET I CAN GUESS THE BASICS OF BOTH RIGS, RICHIE - HSS TOBACCO BURST STRAT, LES PAUL, HIS SIG FENDER(DONT KNOW THE NAME BUT ITS NOT LIKE A TYPICAL FENDER) ORIANTHI-HER SIG PRS GUITARS, PRS ARCHON AMPS(LAST I SAW SHE SWITCHED TO THEM FROM THE 5150III
MAN THE NAME OF THE BAND SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR FOR SOME REASON, DID THEY HAVE ANY BIG HIT SONGS BACK IN THE LATE 90'S TO EARLY 2000'S? DUNNO WHY THAT TIME FRAME CAME TO MIND BUT I SWEAR I'VE HEARD THEIR NAME BEFORE
do either of these know what they are talking about? either its a new edwards or an early eighties 'law suit era' guitar. they dont know what they are talking about.
Matthew is such a cool guy. I love that Nada Surf is still going so strong after all this time.
Damn, way back in 95 or 96, during a meet & greet in France, I asked Matthew if they needed another guitar player. He said no (duh). And now they got one. I guess I was 20 years too early =)

It'd be great if you do a Ryan Bingham's Rig Rundown. That guy has just an amazing gear!!!
Popular!
FYI: Edwards LPs have Duncans from the factory.

Is the Edwards guitar a 125SD?

Why do they never ask about the bass rigs???
Hmmm. It's my understanding that the only true "lawsuit" guitars are the 70's Ibanez Les Pauls because they were the only company to actually be sued by Gibson. The other copies are just "(insert brand name) Les Paul"

RIG RUNDOWN OF '68
Well at least they are playing thru actual amps.
please do Richie Sambora and Orianthi while they're touring together... 2 for the price of one!
THAT WOULD BE COOL BUT I BET I CAN GUESS THE BASICS OF BOTH RIGS, RICHIE - HSS TOBACCO BURST STRAT, LES PAUL, HIS SIG FENDER(DONT KNOW THE NAME BUT ITS NOT LIKE A TYPICAL FENDER) ORIANTHI-HER SIG PRS GUITARS, PRS ARCHON AMPS(LAST I SAW SHE SWITCHED TO THEM FROM THE 5150III
he played strange chords : ) he is great
Yeah, I just break out this $15,000 330 for one song. It's no big deal.
MAN THE NAME OF THE BAND SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR FOR SOME REASON, DID THEY HAVE ANY BIG HIT SONGS BACK IN THE LATE 90'S TO EARLY 2000'S? DUNNO WHY THAT TIME FRAME CAME TO MIND BUT I SWEAR I'VE HEARD THEIR NAME BEFORE
YOU DONT HAVE TO YELL!
They have many great songs but the song from the 90s youre probably thinking of is 'Popular'
Bad Religion Rig rundown, for the love of god
We'd love that but they didn't hit Nashville on their last tour. Next time we hope!!
Can't believe these guys were on the rock boat. didn't fit in.
