New Gov't Mule Album Peace...Like A River out 6/16: mule.net/
Maestro Warren Haynes invited PG’s John Bohlinger to Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, where they hang out after Gov’t Mule’s soundcheck and take a tour through his live rig. This Gibson-heavy collection has been a 40-year-work in progress for the guitarist, who has spent his career playing with David Allan Coe, Dickey Betts, The Allman Brothers, The Dead, leading Gov’t Mule, and much, much more.

When I was 14 my dad took me to my first ABB show in 1996 and we were front row and center. I was having the absolute time of my life and Warren noticed me because I was by FAR the youngest person up front. So between songs he walked over to Dickey and pointed me out to him and they told a roadie to bring them an Eat A Peach shirt and they both signed it and they walked right to the end of the stage and pointed at me and made sure the shirt landed right in my hands! Not long after that I picked up guitar and am 41 now and have been playing religiously ever since. Warren Haynes is still to this day besides Clapton my favorite player on earth and the Gov't Mule album Dose was a modern day Disraeli Gears for me! STILL a masterpiece and I got to see the original Mule in all their glory during that tour and they DESTROYED Frampton AND that version of Skynyrd that night and I absolutely worship at the altar of Gary Rossington but man the Mule back in those days were in world domination mode! Thanks for everything Warren! Guitar has shaped my life in SO many ways!
Such a great, humble LIVING LEGEND!
Me and my buddies I learned to play with have been mule and abb fans since round 93 94 I guess…he’s met warren and Derek and cut a album with Johnny Neil yrs back…
Awesome story! What a memory
That’s was an enjoyable read!!!
Very cool….
🎶✊🏼☮️🏴☠️
man, when you talk about "dose" you were tellin the stone truth about that record. epic from start to finish. i spent sooo many hours learning to play every song as close i could to how he does it, and i learned sooo much. i would be embarrassed to admit how long it took me. glad you mentioned that album, it's one of my all time favorites
I love how Bohlinger is always genuinely like a kid in a candy store. Keep bringing these rig rundowns!
I agree.....also glad when he gave up hair dye....😮
I would be too with Warren!
There’s no way Warren isn’t the most humble guitar hero out there. Seems like such a genuinely nice guy.
he IS GENUINELY A GOOD, KIND MAN
I have spoken with Warren on several occasions ... He IS the kindest and greatest guy! His heart is as big as his riffs!
Finally a new Warren Haynes Rig Rundown, thanks Premier Guitar. His tone is amazing as usual.
Rock on!
@@premierguitar RIP Farmer. What a guy he was -- John, scoot on over to AVL and let's see a #WillRay rundown! That'd be a kick...
That white Firebird sounds fantastic!
What a great guy! Warren Haynes is not only a great guitar player with great ears, but he is also a Gentleman with a capital G. Thanks for showing us your rig sir!
Absolutely love Warren's playing and touch, great voice..he's been an influence on me for decades...an American treasure Forsure...
Warren Haynes made me fall in love with the electric guitar. His tone, musicianship, and gracious nature are a gift. Thank you for posting this!
Oh, and the story that he told about the Les Paul that was "unsellable" reminded me that - years ago, when I was saving up for my first Les Paul - I had a photo of him with that very guitar as the wallpaper on my computer screen. :)
It's Warren's fault I ever bought an Les Paul, being a Strat guy at heart like I am. But I the clip of him at the Dave Matthews Band gig at Central Park on an extremely large screen TV, and I was just blown away.
& dont he have more soul in his playing than anybody else in the genre?
Warren is a living legend. I feel so blessed to have seen him in the Allman Brothers and from the very beginning of Mule.
Man the early days they were badass….I said that like they fell off….not a chance
@@charlesmullins3238 I still miss seeing/hearing Allen Woody in the Mule.
@@mikeheuer1276 many all over the world love him
Best soldano tone ever, I love how kind of higher-than-expected gain tones Warren goes for, yet they work so well
You're joking right? The amp started the higain cascade tone used like a Marshall?
Warren is one of the best to ever do it. I listen to live Mule albums religiously. It’s a shame Allen Woody isn’t there to show off his rig with him.
Shout out to Bohlinger for just being an all around good dude
Thanks Guys, Warren definitely has one of the sweetest guitar tones of all time
We agree!
He is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time.
Yes, quite sweet tones always! Really a tasteful player who can burn with the best of them when he wants to.
I'd REALLY DIG tosee/hear Warren jam with Blackberry Smoke
That P90 Bird !!! Wow that thing sounds amazing
I've never clicked on a video so fast when I saw this was released. Warren is sensational.
Warren is my favourite guitarist and I was lucky enough to buy him a beer at a gig in Wyoming in 1999. I'd never seen him play before and I was travelling in the USA from Australia when I saw Gov't Mule at Jackson Hole but didn't realise who they were.. I was blown away by their music and when they had a break I was at the bar when Warren came up so I bought him a beer and told him how much I enjoyed his guitar playing. He was very down to earth and thanked me for the beer and we had a little chat. It wasn't until I sat back down and asked a couple of locals who he was that I realised he was the great Warren Haynes from ABB and Ive been a fan ever since !! I can't wait for the new album to add to my collection .
I have seen him live with Gov't Mule. Listening to him through my 2-channel system, his guitar tone sounds so real and present. I have learned to respect a lot of Gov't Mule's recording quality in how they capture the essence of the sound.
So great to see Warren touring again and in good health. My favorite slide player and a true legend. Keep rock'in
Haynes is an all-time favorite. Happy to see he's slimmer in recent years as I'd like him to stick around for a good long time.
Great rundown. Poignant to hear Brian's name. RIP to a great soul.
Mr Haynes is a bonafide American treasure.
the quackiness of that LP in a beck tune is gratifying.
Saw Warren when he first joined the Bros and many years later. He's aged like fine fucking wine. Jeffs smiling.
I love Warren. Super cool guy. He’s a staple in the music scene far as I’m concerned. Just a monster on guitar and tone.
I had the pleasure of meeting Warren 20 years ago. He came into my local boutique guitar and amp store to buy an older SLO100. He's a genuinely nice person, humble, and a monster guitar player.
Firebird with the P90's was absolutely THE BEST TONE of all the guitars via TH-cam while listening on my studio speakers! Holy cow! Just perfection.
That section just hit and my jaw dropped! What a sound!
john i want you to meet all these guitarists and to be able to talk and approach their instruments and their effects, i would like to do like you. How lucky to have been able to meet Warren Haynes ... many thanks from France ... RIP Brian Farmer ❤
Cool story- I was delivering a part to a repair shop several years ago; as I passed a long haired gent that just oozed aura; I literally stopped; turned around and said; “man you look really familiar?” He goes “oh yeah”; I say; “yeah- you look just like Warren Haynes”…he laughs and says; “yeah I get that a lot”…So I go; “Are you Warren Haynes?!?” He smiled and said “Yes Sir” :)) it was just the two of us; so I was able to calmly speak to him about all the ABB and Govt Mule shows I had seen. We spoke about Butch Trucks; who had just passed…He had a Tesla Car :) Total gentleman. We played Soulshine at my Brother’s Funeral- Warrens just a blessing to the World. Carry On Sir. True Legend ❤
Love this man's playing. Truly a gift to all of us..
His playing is so good that it is easy to overlook what a great singer he is, too. Combining those two in one person really shows how insanely talented he is as a musician.
The Custom Shop Firebird 3 P-90’s is killer.
The 12 string Les Paul is fabulous! Ive never seen one of those.
And very special sounding too.
Btw - did you notice the text on the truss rod cover? "TOLV" - that is 12 in danish/swedish/norwegian when written out in letters. Wonder who put that text on it?
Love this rig Rundown Warren Haynes is such a killer guitarist his tone is outstanding and his voice is true to the music.
Love that he played so we ended as lovers
Top of the mountain right here…when he flipped that switch on the 12 hair stood up….just twist all the way to the right on volume knob
Finally a rig rundown with the Man Himself
Can't wait to see them again......Dec. 29th 2023.....The Met....Philly....
That 12-string LP may be the best thing ever witnessed
Play on, Warren!
Warren is the easiest guy to like. Total legend and still humble.
Warren has been, without a doubt, my favorite player since I first heard him during his initial run with the Allman Bros.and Mule has been my number one band since it's inception. Besides his great playing, songwriting, and influence on my own playing he is one of the most humble, down to earth, nicest professionals one could ever meet. Thank you for this great Rig Rundown and much thanks and love to Warren for sharing his gift with us
My favorite guitar player! Warren Haynes 👏👏
Lots of love for Warren!!
Man, the Allman Brothers family has some eerie dates in their lore. Warren mentioned the much loved Brian Farmer. Brian passed Aug 24 2014 and Allen Woody passed Aug 26 2000. Duane Allman passed Oct 29 1971 and one year and 2 weeks later and 3 blocks away from Duane's accident, Berry Oakley passed. Sorry to point out somber moments, but they were all important, loved and should be remembered
I lived in Ashville NC. worked with a couple ppl that went to school with Warren, always spoke highly of him.
warren is a down to earth amzing guy, excellent player, a true artist and unique..
Amazing tones coming out of that rig, but props to Warren Haynes for still being such a great player.
Class act. Thank you, Mr Haynes, John & Premier Guitar :)
Warren came into my pharmacy where I worked as he needed a script for his wife. When I saw him, I had a grin a mile wide. He let me go home to my house grab my R9 and proceeded to sign the back of it. Topped it off with a picture of the 2 of us with said R9.
Great tone and a great man. He's done a lot for Asheville to boot.
13:40 I love how Warren mentions mini humbuckers as opposed to Firebird pickups... They're a completely different thing, it's great that he mentions that.
I saw him and Dicky with Allman Bros live around '93. What a show. They both played great and had Soldano stacks that sounded amazing. It was a good venue.
That 335 sounds insane, im usually not a huge 335 fan but that guitar has none of the thin harshness that i dont like, thats a nice piece!
Consummate professional
Great guy
Incredible tone
This man is a treasure. Thanks a lot for this episode!
All of his guitars have amazing tone. Woof! 😍💯😍👍
R.I.P. BRIAN FARMER 🙏 R.I.P. ALLEN WOODY 🙏
Great player - very underrated.
I love the live stuff with Government Mule.
Warren Haynes has played with everyone. Classic unique blues tone who can switch to other styles like jazz
Love listening to Jeff Beck (RIP) Great job Warren!!
John himself is one of my favourite guitarists. Love Gov't Mule
Saw the Allmans in 91 at the Philadelphia Spectrum,Little Feat opened up. Seen them 22 times after. Warren has the best roadhouse southern dixie fried tone
He's so Lovable! God bless him 🙏
Warren’s got one of my all time favorite tones!! One of my all time favs!! (And he went to my high school)
Warren is a down to earth humble guy. Love when your heroes are cool !
I was lucky enough to see Gov't Mule right before the sad passing of Allen. That was my favorite line up. 3 piece balls to the wall!
I've met Warren several times at Government Mule gigs back in the 90's when they were playing smaller clubs. Some of the best music i've ever had the privilege of listening to. And Warren and the late Allen Woodie were always great to chat with.
Dig the way Warren plays. First done seen him with Bobby bustin out Dead tunes. Keepin the blues rock alive and well.
Warren Haynes’ ability to just play and perform almost like he’s on autopilot, but definitely still in the moment. I think he’s probably lived 3/4’s of life on stage
never seen a bad show from him/Govt Mule or when he was with the Allman Brothers - exciting player
Seriously-just how good is Warren Haynes-what a player-and what a really great singer which is often overlooked.Hell of a job being his guitar tech though.Bring on the new Mule album!!!
What a gift this man brings to music lovers across the globe. Long live Warren and long live Govt Mule.🥁🎸🎹🎤⚡🎶🔊🔥
This has to set a record for the most guitars on a tour set up in every alternate tuning you can imagine. Tone and chops are still incredible.
Just saw Govt mule on 6/10/23 at the mountain winery in Saratoga Ca. The whole band was on point that night. Ida mae opened
the late night set Mule played at Bonnaroo in 2008 is one of the best sets of music ever played by any band ever. I mean they did No Quarter and Since I've Been Lovin you WITH John Paul Jones. Sugaree with Bob Dylan. some blues with Luther Dickinson. etc. etc.
That Bonnaroo was legendary!
Warren is one of my favorite musicians and his Les Paul neck tone is the best! He's so versatile and is great at slide and is a very good singer.
Great player, and damn he's worked his butt off too and still manages to be a gent as well. I hope we get him over to the UK soon. I shall be there.
Thanks!
Warren is a legend to say the least. Always has amazing tone and feel. One of my all time favorites! Such an incredible musician and humble man. I’ve seen him many many times. Seen him with the Warren Haynes band, Govt Mule and the ABB. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen!
Cool to see an updated rig rundown. Never knew the story behind the tobacco Lester before. Definitely miss Farmer.
Warren is such a humble cool cat , always a pleasure seeing him live and after shows he’s just so kind to everyone. And of course totally bad ass guitar player and underrated songwriter. Thanks for getting Warren to do this it was a pleasure
I learned so much from this guy back when he would write stuff for Harmony Central. This is over 20 years ago. Cool episode!
Man I remember all those harmony central posts too!
I wld print em all out and refer back to em lol! Made
My day reading this post!
@Brent Baron the "good ol' days"
Warren for president!
Saw Warren with the Mule at the Madison Theater in KY, still have the pick he thru in audience. One of my most cherished memorabilia!! Thanks PG for the walk down memory lane. Love to nerd out to the Greats and their gear!!
Fabulous, his Firebird with the P90 sound particularly wonderful
Great insight into a fantastic guitarist. Just awesome. And a big shout out to John Bolinger! What a legend. So many great interviews and gear reviews from someone who really knows their stuff, and with most perfect posture! Love your work John. Keep up the great work.
I suspect he’s a nice dude away from the camera too.
I think I like Warren's tone best with a Firebird P90s, so expressive. I remember live as well.
Stoked to see them this summer with Dark Side of the Mule!
Love the way he rakes the strings. So unique
Yes, great pick attack!
Warren is just too cool for school!
Warren is one of the very best on the face of the Earth. A good guy with a monster talent and tone for days on end.
That firebird sounds 👌
Wow!!!! What a experience!!!!. great comment
Warren's gettin old.
One of the best string benders on earth.
His theory on the Gibson Firebird is spot-on. 11 to 50 down a half step is the way to go. A little looser, a little warmer, and most importantly stays in tune much better then say 10 to 46 in standard tuning.
This man’s band and music is an inspiration to me. They don’t make musicians like this anymore!
I played a 335 dot similar to what Warren plays at about 6:30 back when I was at the Gibson garage earlier this month. The guitar was amazing, but I don’t play nearly as well as Warren. He’s just awesome.
That's some beautiful noodling. Amazing tone and control.
Warren Haynes is such a highly underrated guitarist. I love how he talks about making the guitar "speak" with a "vocabulary," which is the hallmark of a guitar player who has something to say while playing.
First saw him when I was 10 in 2000 with Phil Lesh and friends.. him and jimmy herring together is absolute magic, they know so well how to complement each other
Thanks, Warren. I want to come see you in Asheville!
What a fantastic and versatile player. Even more so a great guy and humble, perhaps underrated to the mainstream. Thanks for the video.
What a treasure trove of Gibsons.
John’s face and the nod at 24:22 😂😂
One of the baddest MFers to EVER -lay guitar….great songwriter and singer too
